Book excerpt: "This Heritage Corridor Plan is one of four community-based documents prepared by the Big Island Resource Conservation and development Council (RC&D) under contract with the State of Hawaii Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT). It is part of the State's ongoing efforts to provide assistance to an economically distressed area undergoing the loss of 1,200 jobs with the shut down of large-scale sugar production in 1994. More than 100 years of plantation life based on the sugar industry and its related lifestyle came to a close in 1994 with the shut down of the Hamakua Sugar Company, the last active large scale sugar plantation in the island of Hawaii's northeast sector known as the Hilo Hamakua region. This plan is intended to assist these sugar plantation communities shift from this historic economic base to other possible alternatives, one of which is a specific tourism growth market known as "ecotourism" or "cultural tourism." It is a specialized type of visitor plant tailored to specific visitor interests in local history, culture, the natural environment, and seeking higher levels of interaction with local residents.
