Based on such powerful partnership, the main issue was to help European manufacturing industry to define and structure the strategic knowledge in order to face the strategic worldwide challenges. Manufacturing in Europe currently has two essential aspects: 1. It has to be knowledge intensive given the European demands for high-tech products and services (e.g. electronics, medicines).

Furthermore, the capturing of tacit and explicit knowledge and its use in streamlining business processes differentiates knowledge management systems from expert systems. The purpose of this study is defining the practical, pragmatic and replicable approaches to knowledge management as it relates to the build-to-order and mass customization strategies of manufacturing and services companies in the United States. The overall research question guiding this study is: How is knowledge management being used today to streamline and make more efficient service strategies of manufacturing and services companies? The research is descriptive and empirical in nature because the primary data were collected using the survey method through fact finding technique such as a questionnaire. The results show the integration of increasing role-based knowledge management in the workflow of a company. From this study, a knowledge sharing maturity model is derived, which illustrates how the level and extent of the exploitation of knowledge in build-to-order and quote-to-order strategies have a long-term impact on the financial performance. Based on these findings, a causal relationship emerges from how a company manages its knowledge in the build-to-order and quote-to-order strategy based on these findings, and they align well to a multi-stage maturity model as a result. One of the main objectives of the study is to determine how the customer churn rate can be reduced. By optimizing business processes, companies can improve increase customer satisfaction while reducing the Days Sales Outstanding levels over time.

The present thesis work explores a Case Study developed in a Chemical Facility located in Monterrey urban area, this facility is dedicated to the manufacturing of synthetic yarns for the textile industry. The facility object of study, is facing a problem traduced in the loss of knowledge from its employees, which is not structured and not captured, it means that exists in an intangible tacit way, this loss is either caused by the employees turnover as well as employees retirement. The problem has turned into an opportunity, since the management is interested in the development of a proposal of a tool that manages and captures the tacit knowledge related to the manufacturing activities, and that resides within employees in the form of Learning, Experiences and Skills developed. Based on previous researches, and in complementary literature in this thesis work is presented a proposal of a Manufacturing Tacit Knowledge Model and a Knowledge Repository, which defines knowledge classes that can be easily identified by the users. The defined classes are based on common terminology of the different areas from a facility that are involved in the manufacturing process. The final product of this thesis work, the named IK Textiles Knowledge is intended to be a tool that can capture the knowledge from the employees, also be the source for knowledge searches when required by employees to improve decision making and prevent potential events; and also provide privileges to the employees to modify and challenge the knowledge that is stored in the repository.

Integrating AKM with an agile project management paradigm is a challenge because the agile philosophy downplays both plan-driven development and documentation. Yet, by integrating lightweight AKM practices with the process, agile software development could avoid maintenance and communication problems arising from scarce documentation. In this chapter, we introduce existing technologies that could be used as elements of lightweight AKM for agile software development and present possible models to integrate AKM with Scrum, which is the most popular agile approach in use today. In particular, we advocate the exploitation of architectural evaluations to collect architecturally significant information semiautomatically and the use of automated document generation to expose the contents of an architectural information repository in an easily accessible form. The proposed models are based on observed architecting work practices in industry and on interviews carried out in industry to identify the architectural information flow in real-life agile projects.
