Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brigham Young was a rough-hewn craftsman from New York whose impoverished and obscure life was electrified by the Mormon faith. He trudged around the United States and England to gain converts for Mormonism, spoke in spiritual tongues, married more than fifty women, and eventually transformed a barren desert into his vision of the Kingdom of God. While previous accounts of his life have been distorted by hagiography or polemical exposé, John Turner provides a fully realized portrait of a colossal figure in American religion, politics, and westward expansion. After the 1844 murder of Mormon founder Joseph Smith, Young gathered those Latter-day Saints who would follow him and led them over the Rocky Mountains. In Utah, he styled himself after the patriarchs, judges, and prophets of ancient Israel. As charismatic as he was autocratic, he was viewed by his followers as an indispensable protector and by his opponents as a theocratic, treasonous heretic. Under his fiery tutelage, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints defended plural marriage, restricted the place of African Americans within the church, fought the U.S. Army in 1857, and obstructed federal efforts to prosecute perpetrators of the Mountain Meadows Massacre. At the same time, Young's tenacity and faith brought tens of thousands of Mormons to the American West, imbued their everyday lives with sacred purpose, and sustained his church against adversity. Turner reveals the complexity of this spiritual prophet, whose commitment made a deep imprint on his church and the American Mountain West.

For years it has been the privilege of the author to count the men here written of as his personal friends. He has travelled with them in all manner of conveyances, shared their pleasures and hardships, and seen at first hand their successful labours. Many of these sketches first appeared in the v. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "German environmentalism did not begin with the emergence of the Green Party in the 1970s. As this book shows, an active environmental movement has existed in Germany for more than a century. Raymond H. Dominick III documents the many so-called NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) protests, in which neighbors banded together to try to halt the environmental destruction. He also chronicles the origins and evolution of Germany's long-lived conservation societies. Using their forgotten newsletters and archives, Dominick reconstructs the agendas, tactics, and influence of these groups from their formation around the beginning of the twentieth century until the early 1970s. He finds that in Germany, nature has found defenders among persons whose politics range from conservative to socialist and whose social standing ranges from the Kaiser to factory workers. Dominick carefully explores the intellectual and organizational ties between the conservationists and the Nazis. He concludes with a look at today's Green movement and its connection with earlier ideologies of conservation and environmentalism." --book jacket.

Book excerpt: The massacre at Mountain Meadows on September 11, 1857, was the single most violent attack on a wagon train in the thirty-year history of the Oregon and California trails. Yet it has been all but forgotten. Will Bagley’s Blood of the Prophets is an award-winning, riveting account of the attack on the Baker-Fancher wagon train by Mormons in the local militia and a few Paiute Indians. Based on extensive investigation of the events surrounding the murder of over 120 men, women, and children, and drawing from a wealth of primary sources, Bagley explains how the murders occurred, reveals the involvement of territorial governor Brigham Young, and explores the subsequent suppression and distortion of events related to the massacre by the Mormon Church and others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Building on Common Ground All the prophets are to be taken seriously by Muslims. They know the names of many Bible characters and often know Islam’s version of their stories. Most Muslims, however, are also aware that they do not know the whole story. This book is about sharing the precious truth of the gospel by referencing characters on whom Muslims themselves set a high value. Calling on the Prophets offers helpful, practical conversational habits to initiate, navigate, and steer conversations through the common ground of our prophetic heritage. This is not a method to replace all others; it is an extra ability to add to our skill set. In the first four chapters, Colin Bearup lays out the principles and sets ground rules for respectful, fruitful conversations. The next ten chapters apply these principles to fourteen Bible characters known to Muslims as prophets. If we master the approach, we can engage in these example conversations and successfully delve into others. None of these ideas are totally new, but they are brought together in one slim volume with real-life examples. Here is an opportunity to learn new ways to enhance our effectiveness in sharing the good news of Jesus Christ.
