Stored catalyst is more difficult to reduce than clean catalyst with short-time exposure to oxygen. Oxidation is less complete as percent exposed decreases. Upon cooling in H/sub 2/ from 450/sup 0/C and flushing with argon, there is more H than in a catalyst exposed to H/sub 2/ at 25/sup 0/C and then flushed. The Pd particles are more elongated than the Pt catalysts we have studied, and the particles are less perfect. The activity and selectivity of the entire series were examined with the hydrogenolysis of methylcyclopropane at 0/sup 0/C. These catalysts are mildly structure sensitive. Formation of palladium hydride during pretreatment (observed with in-situ x-ray diffraction studies) reduces the activity, but this occurs primarily for the low dispersions. Purging in O/sub 2/ He or Ar for 15 to 30 min at 20/sup 0/C eliminates the hydride. The turnover frequency for i-butane formation is ten times higher for Pt/SiO/sub 2/ than for these Pd/SiO/sub 2/ catalysts, but the n-butane activity is similar for both; as a result the selectivity of Pd/SiO/sub 2/ is one sixth that for the Pt/SiO/sub 2/ catalysts. The reduction in loading with increasing temperature of H/sub 2/ reduction of Pt/SiO/sub 2/ was confirmed with additional x-ray measurements and by desorption studies. This effect is largest for the lowest % exposed and is accompanied by a decrease in particle size and a shift of the size distribution to smaller sizes.

Book excerpt: The set of Pd/SiO2 catalysts described in Report COO-4254-3 has been further characterized by in-situ, controlled atmosphere x-ray diffraction studies. In-situ reaction studies have also been conducted for methylcyclopropane hydrogenolysis and the formation of palladium hydride has been detected for the first time during a catalytic reaction. Isotopic exchange between cyclopentane and deuterium has been investigated for the series. This reaction is structure sensitive with the turnover number increasing monotonically with percentage metal exposed. Selectivity for exchange is also structure sensitive, with the ratio of d10/d5 steadily declining with increasing percentage exposed. Similar behavior has been found for the hydrogenation of propylene, although the patterns of structure sensitivity differ. The mean square amplitude of vibration of the Pt atoms (measured with x-rays) has been obtained in situ in different gas environments; it has been found to increase with increasing temperature of H2 reduction during pretreatment. For low percent Pt exposed in these catalysts, it was found that Pt changes form with increasing temperature of hydrogen reduction during pretreatment. The volume fraction determined from the area of the diffraction peak decreases appreciably. An examination of the Pt fluourescent x-rays however, shows that the Pt is still present.

Book excerpt: The preparation and characterization of supported platinum catalysts has been extended to a series of alumina-supported catalysts similar to the previously investigated platinum--silica series. Characterization has been carried out via hydrogen chemisorption, hydrogen--oxygen titration, hydrogenolysis of methylcyclopropane and deuterium exchange with cyclopentane. In all, some twenty catalysts, with platinum percentage exposed ranging from 4.1 to 103% have been prepared and characterized. As was the case for the silica supported platinum, the specific conditions of catalyst pretreatment have been found to affect substantially the structure sensitive behavior in all cases. In addition, the thermal conditions employed in catalyst preparation affect the nature of structure sensitive behavior, which was not the case for Pt/SiO2. Substantial effort has been devoted to the development of a suitable system for making x-ray measurements in controlled atmospheres. Several of the Pt/SiO2 catalysts have been investigated in hydrogen atmospheres, with the curious result that the apparent loading of metal detected in hydrogen is lower than that determined in air (which agreed with the value determined in preparation).

Work was completed on the interactions between cobalt and .gamma.-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/. Work was begun on the combined Co/Mo/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ system. A separate study is in progress on support interactions between nickel and a variety of supports; particular emphasis has been on the effect of preparation method.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During this period research has been carried out on five separate catalyst systems. The effect of zinc ions on the interaction between cobalt and .gamma.-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ has been studied. Work on the oxidic Mo/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ system has been published and studies have been extended to the sulfided catalysts. The first phase of work on the Co/Mo/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ system has been completed. Work on W/Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ catalysts has begun and the oxidic system has been studied in some detail. Work continues on metal-support interactions in supported nickel catalysts. An electron spectroscopy (ESCA) study has been completed and work is continuing on correlation of the ESCA results with measurements like temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and temperature programmed reduction (TPRd).
