Book excerpt: In order to truly understand data signals transmitted by satellite, one must understand scintillation theory in addition to well established theories of EM wave propagation and scattering. Scintillation is a nuisance in satellite EM communications, but it has stimulated numerous theoretical developments with science applications. This book not only presents a thorough theoretical explanation of scintillation, but it also offers a complete library of MATLAB codes that will reproduce the book examples. The library includes GPS coordinate manipulations, satellite orbit prediction, and earth mean magnetic field computations. The subect matter is for EM researchers; however, also theory is relevant to geophysics, acoustics, optics and astoronomy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing and geographical information science (GIS) have advanced considerably in recent years. However, the potential of remote sensing and GIS within the environmental sciences is limited by uncertainty, especially in connection with the data sets and methods used. In many studies, the issue of uncertainty has been incompletely addressed. The situation has arisen in part from a lack of appreciation of uncertainty and the problems it can cause as well as of the techniques that may be used to accommodate it. This book provides general overviews on uncertainty in remote sensing and GIS that illustrate the range of uncertainties that may occur, in addition to describing the means of measuring uncertainty and the impacts of uncertainty on analyses and interpretations made. Uncertainty in Remote Sensing and GIS provides readers with comprehensive coverage of this largely undocumented subject: * Relevant to a broad variety of disciplines including geography, environmental science, electrical engineering and statistics * Covers range of material from base overviews to specific applications * Focuses on issues connected with uncertainty at various points along typical data analysis chains used in remote sensing and GIS Written by an international team of researchers drawn from a variety of disciplines, Uncertainty in Remote Sensing and GIS provides focussed discussions on topics of considerable importance to a broad research and user community. The book is invaluable reading for researchers, advanced students and practitioners who want to understand the nature of uncertainty in remote sensing and GIS, its limitations and methods of accommodating it.

This book was released on 1983 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiowaves are employed for remote sensing over a wide range of frequencies, at least from HF to 100 GHz, HF radars sense both natural and man-made targets over vast areas by bouncing radio waves off the ionosphere. Development of this means of remote sensing has proceeded since the late forties. Early studies concentrated on the mapping of the properties of the ionosphere itself. Later studies have emphasized two applications: (1) the detection and tracking of targets such as aircraft, missiles and ships; and (2) the measurement of sea state. On-going research and development activities continue to improve our capability to deal with ionospheric properties which limit the performance of our systems. Topics for discussion include: (a) application areas target detection/tracking, sea state monitoring, wind and wave field monitoring, including wake detection, terrain mapping, measurement of sea ice; (b) propagation limitations to performance; and (c) system techniques for ameliorating propagation limitations including adaptive concepts and novel processing concepts. The purpose of this meeting was to review the current status of existing and proposed operational systems from the viewpoint of propagation factors included and strategies for dealing with them. This meeting identified areas in which more research is required to improve the reliability, performance, and cost-effectiveness of operational systems.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expansion of telecommunication services into the millimeter wave region prompts a careful look at the limitations of the atmosphere that can give rise to severe signal degradations. In Part I the loss and scatter mechanisms in the 10- to 40- GHz range are examined. It is concluded that there is a need for further theoretical and experimental work on the atmospheric propagation properties in order to support the engineering efforts in designing reliable, useful systems. In Part II the discussions are extended to the 40- to 75 -GHz region where absorption by oxygen dominates. In this region, communication through the atmosphere is not practical; however, the oxygen absorption has a great potential for remote sensing of atmospheric variables, and for special (short-range communication) applications. Unsolved problems of the propagation medium are discussed as a basis for formulating proposals; and the objectives of an experimental program for studying oxygen dispersion and absorption are given.
