Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pronouncing Medical Lexicon: Containing the Correct Pronunciation and Definition of Terms Used But when it is recollected that heretofore no attempt has been made by any author of an English Medical Lexicon, to give the pronunciation of medical terms, only so far as to indicate the accent, we ought rather to be astonished that more errors have not obtained than are met with. Students heretofore have had no guide in this regard, except the usages of their preceptor and the Professors of the Colleges, who also have sometimes failed to be entirely reliable, and hence the amusing mistakes so often discoverable in their conversation. A knowledge of the Phonotypic alphabet, which they can acquire in a few hours at the farthest, will enable them to entirely conquer all the difficulties in the way of a correct pronunciation. The definitions in the pages of this work have been made as brief as clearness, definiteness and accuracy would allow, and for the following reasons. No one expects to learn all he wishes to know upon any professional subject by a simple reference to his Dictionary. With a library at his command, he expects from his Lexicon to obtain the meaning, and the pronunciation of the terms employed by the author, and only for this does ho consult its pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Pronouncing Medical Dictionary: Embracing the Terminology of Medicine and the Kindred Sciences, With Their Signification, Etymology, and Pronunciation; With an Appendix, Comprising an Explanation of the Latin Terms and Phrases Occurring in Medicine, Anatomy, Pharmacy, Etc The work here offered to the public is designed to supply several wants which have been deeply felt by those commencing the study of medicine and the affiliated sciences. An acquaintance with the dead languages, or at least with Latin, was formerly, and in some parts of Europe is still, considered absolutely necessary for a graduate in medicine as well' as in the other learned professions. Although in the United States a clas sical education is not made an indispensable condition for conferring a medical degree, yet, so long as the great majority of professional terms are in Latin, some knowledge of this language may be said to be absolutely requisite for the medical student. The fact that multitudes of our young men commence the study of medicine without any previous acquaintance with Latin or Greek renders it important that the elementary works intended for the use of stu dents should be adapted to meet this exigency.
