Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyday mobility is neither favorable nor unfavorable to health. While it can facilitate social interactions, increase access to remote services, or encourage physical activity, it can also generate pollution, promote the spread of epidemics or cause traffic accidents. This book presents different facets of the relationship between daily mobility and health, focusing on the environments (geographical, social and political) that people live and move around in. It analyzes the role of mobility in the mechanisms of environmental exposure and diffusion, as well as the resulting health inequalities. It deals with active modes of travel (mainly walking and cycling) and the local contexts that are conducive to them. Finally, it offers a critical reading of the place given to everyday mobility in policies to combat obesity and rationalize regional healthcare provision.

Book excerpt: Enrico Michelini illustrates that sport plays a very marginal role in the contemporary health promotion. This is the main result of the present analysis of national strategies for the promotion of physical activity issued by the health ministries of France, Germany, and Italy. All these health-strategies are rather ambiguous on this subject: They mention sport systematically as an abstract term, but they marginalise it as a medium of health in its traditional-competitive form. As a consequence, while sport has generally been considered healthy over a long period in the past, most health organisations today recommend only moderate physical activity as conducive to good health. The author examines this paradigmatic change in the international discussion about the forms of health-enhancing physical activity through a theoretical framework based on Luhmann’s systems theory.

Book excerpt: Globally, physical inactivity is on the rise in most countries, and according to the WHO, it is considered one of the leading major public health risks. As children’s physical activity behaviors are conveyed into adulthood, many interventions focus on establishing healthy physical activity habits in children to prevent the potential negative health outcomes associated with low physical activity over the life course. The school environment provides an opportunity to reach the majority of children, however, physical activity promotion in schools can often be a challenge. Barriers to the success of physical activity interventions include the physical, social and economic environment, competencies, and workload of teachers, as well as the perception that physical activity may interfere with the primary task of schools, which is education. Moreover, the evaluation of physical activity interventions for children is challenging, raising a discussion on how to best evaluate these interventions.

Book excerpt: Over the past three decades there has been widespread commitment to an understanding that sport can play a key role in community development. The role of sport within communities has been promoted with a wide range of goals such as environmental considerations, encouragement of civic pride, enhancement of confidence and self-esteem and development of social cohesion as well as the fostering of a fit and healthy workforce. To address these issues, a number of programmes have been funded and supported to develop the role of sport in communities worldwide and to increase participation and access to sport and physical activities in rural areas. In addition we are witnessing the development of new sports communities through social media such as Facebook and My Space. The concern is that we need to revisit the concept of ‘community and sport’ and to investigate the current understanding of these terms in view of the evolving role of sport in a range of national settings. This book will present the platform upon which this process can be undertaken and offers a fundamental re-evaluation of the relationship that currently exists between sport and communities throughout selected parts of the world. This book was previously published as a special issue of Sport in Society.

Book excerpt: Luxembourg - international financial center, European administrative center, destination country for immigration? This empirical study provides insights about a society that has hitherto largely eluded scientific investigation and observes the processes of identity construction in globalised conditions. The interdisciplinary team of authors exposes the processes of subjective appropriations and institutional attributions at work in the fields of languages, spaces, perceptions of self and others as well as everyday cultures, and identifies for the first time socio-cultural milieus in the Grand Duchy. The findings of the three-year research project uncover the ambivalences and dynamics of a multicultural and multilingual society.

56% of European citizens with a disability say that they never do any regular physical activity. This is a paradox in view of the many studies showing that sport is one of the most effective ways of encouraging inclusion. One of the challenges concerns the training of sports and physical activity instructors and coaches.Technical and teaching knowledge need to be adapted to take account of disabled sport practice and persons with a disability. This observation led the Sport and Citizenship think tank to bring together a European work group on this subject. This work is the result of three years of discussions. It provides various points for consideration on the development of an appropriate training course which will help support and integrate persons with a disability in the best possible way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited collection includes articles which examine the complex relationships between sport, physical activity and public health. It reflects a current expansion in academic, policy and practice interest in sport and physical activity for public health. Our contributors discuss issues connected to the politics and policy of sport, physical activity and public health by focusing on a range of theoretical themes including evidence and knowledge production, national policies and the political promotion of sport and physical activity for health, sports mega-events and public health, social diversity in community sport for health programming, education and training in physical education and fitness sectors, and critical perspectives on partnership working in sport and public health. Overall, the chapters reflect debate about the motivations of national and local government intervention in policy making on public health that includes the role of sport and / or physical activity, and explores the discussions about the impact that such policy decisions have on people and their communities. This book was originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Sport Policy and Politics.
