Book excerpt: The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has issued a goal to have 80% of nurses with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) by the year 2020 as a result of studies indicating that nurses need to be prepared at the BSN level to meet the increasing demands in providing patient care since studies have shown better patient outcomes with BSN prepared nurses (Front Matter, 2011; IOM, 2010; McEwen, 2013). The IOM goal of 80% by 2020 is in response to research that has demonstrated improved patient outcomes for those cared for by BSN prepared nurses (Aiken, Clarke, Cheung, Sloane, & Silber, 2003). The purpose of this study was to research attributes of the RN to BSN program that facilitate retention in Registered Nurse (RN) to BSN programs. The research question is, what attributes support the retention of students in a RN to BSN program? A descriptive study design using mixed methods data collection was used to facilitate the best understanding of the research problem. Data were collected through surveys, and followed up with interviews with a subset of the initial population. Interview participants for this study included student participants who were enrolled in a RN to BSN program to determine what program attributes supported retention at a private Roman Catholic university. The results indicated the need for a program that implements the Culture of Excellence model to promote student retention. The Culture of Excellence focuses on defining desired faculty attributes that are integral to student success, retention fostered by a sense of belonging, and student needs and desired qualities that are met through consistent faculty support. The six implications for practice included building the Culture of Excellence, going beyond articulation agreements to define academic pathways, creating the right time for students to pursue their education, creating the preferred method of delivery, creating a detailed, informative orientation, and utilizing the Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for Professional Nursing Practice to support building quality curriculum. The implications promote facilitating growth in the RN to BSN program to contribute to the Institute of Medicine's (IOM) goal of 80% BSN by 2020, and improving patient outcomes through improving safe, quality patient care.

Topping the list of crucial priorities for many academic institutions is the retention of these nursing students. Yet, the reality is that many students decide not to complete their course of study for reasons other than academic failure. The retention of nursing students is essential to securing competent, well-educated nurses to care for society in years to come. Current research has indicated that the enrollment of students pursuing an Associate Degree of Nursing within the Community College systems has greatly increased; however, attrition rates remain high in these groups when compared to Baccalaureate Nursing programs. Quantitative studies have identified academic as well as non-academic reasons that influence students' decisions to stay in school. Yet, our efforts to fully understand these reasons remain limited by the closed-ended questions asked of these students about their challenges to remain in school. This study took a different approach to further investigate the actions and processes identified by non-traditional college nursing students in order to contribute to student retention theory. The grounded theory methodology of Charmaz (2006) was used to identify three major study concepts that were identified from audio-recorded interviews which highlighted the retention actions and processes from ten non-traditional college nursing students. The major concepts of enhancing personal capacity, learning to balance, and maintaining support were interpreted from this study's findings. The postulate interpreted from this study included the following: Community college non-traditional nursing students who are able to enhance their personal capacity through the actions and processes of learning to balance and maintaining support may have increased capabilities to remain in their nursing programs.

Book excerpt: This study is designed to understand the patterns of selection, preparation, retention and graduation of undergraduate pre-licensure clinical nursing students in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University enrolled in 2007 and 2008. The resulting patterns may guide policy decision making regarding future cohorts in this program. Several independent variables were examined including grades earned in prerequisite courses; replacement course frequency; scores earned on the Nurse Entrance Test (NET); the number of prerequisite courses taken at four-year institutions; race/ethnicity; and gender. The dependent variable and definition of success is completion of the Traditional Pre-licensure Clinical Nursing Program in the prescribed four terms. Theories of retention and success in nursing programs at colleges and universities guide the research. Correlational analysis and multiple logistic regression revealed that specific prerequisite courses--Human Nutrition, Clinical Healthcare Ethics, and Human Pathophysiology--as well as race/ethnicity, and gender are predictive of completing this program in the prescribed four terms.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted to explore the relationship between a program-specific orientation program for associate degree nursing students and first semester course grades, retention, and persistence to graduation. Previous research of orientation programs for associate degree nursing students has proved inconclusive in promoting student success. A significant difference was identified in first semester course grades between the orientation and no orientation groups, with the orientation group having an average lower course grade. The potential for confounding variables was discussed. There were no significant differences found in the relationship between orientation participation and first-year retention rates or orientation participation and persistence to graduation. Data analysis also determined that student age did not influence the prediction of first-year retention rates for students who did or did not participate in the orientation program. The results of this study suggest that there is no relationship between a program-specific orientation program for associate degree nursing students and their first-year retention and persistence rates.
