Book excerpt: This study examined whether or not student, parent, and peer engagement factors that contribute to at-risk students' success in graduating from high school continue to be important in making the transition from high school to postsecondary education. The data set used was the National Education Longitudinal Study of 1988, which included 1994 data obtained two years after students' scheduled high school graduation. At-risk students exhibited two or more of six risk factors, including "family in the lowest socioeconomic quartile" or "held back a grade". Analysis used alternative statistical methodology, specifically regression analysis and the "odds ratios" produced by this procedure. Key findings indicated that: (1) students whose parents frequently discussed school-related matters and/or had high educational expectations were much more likely than other students to enroll in postsecondary education; (2) students who reported that most or all of their high school friends planned to attend college were far more likely to attend themselves; (3) participating in college preparation activities such as gathering information about financial aid increased the odds of enrolling in postsecondary education; and (4) moderate- to high-risk students participating in college outreach programs were more likely to attend college. Unfortunately, this trend has continued to increase; according to the most recent data from the National Center for Homeless Education, the number of homeless students has reached a record of 1,056,794. These students are one of the most marginalized and victimized populations in schools. They experience more daily stressors and are more at risk than their housed peers. Unfortunately, there is a dearth in educational research about the conditions, within the school context, that promote resilience in this population that is highly at-risk. Using a conceptual framework that draws upon literature on educational risks, resilience, school structures, and school climate with respect to homeless students, this comparative qualitative case study investigated the protective factors offered by two school models for homeless students. The study compared the institutional structures, school climate, and experiences of students served by distinct types of programs: a traditional school and an alternative school designed specifically for homeless children and youth. By examining the impact of different school settings, the study contributes to a better understanding of the challenges, successes, and recommended research-based interventions designed to help a vulnerable student population. Findings suggest resilience-promoting protective factors recommended for a general student population apply to homeless students. Recommendations to schools interested in fostering resilience in their homeless population are provided.

Book excerpt: Despite an increased awareness of the broad negative impacts of trauma exposure on the cognitive, academic, and social development of students, and the strong empirical support for supportive interventions at multiple levels, schools continue to struggle to implement such services for students. As the nation's largest provider of mental health services, schools face a variety of complexities, including mismatches in the preparation and theoretical orientation of service providers, to school infrastructure, leadership, professional development, mission, and funding structures being inhospitable to effective delivery. Schools may benefit from the efficiencies in assessment, differentiation, and monitoring provided by the multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) framework. Specifically, trauma-informed interventions delivered to whole classes (tier 2), by teachers with limited specialized training are promising in terms of efficiency and sustainability, and remain limited. Equally promising for the school mental health literature is the integration of resilience theory, or the development of protective factors and the promotion positive adaptation in the face of risk. This mixed methods study evaluated the implementation of a 9-week tier 2 trauma and resilience curriculum developed by school administrators and teachers in a public alternative high school in the Pacific Northwest. 53 students completed surveys at pre and post-intervention measuring their perceptions of their own resilience using a 59-item composite measure. Seven teachers shared survey and qualitative feedback on the implementation of the intervention in terms of its acceptability, feasibility, appropriateness, and effectiveness. Results indicate that students demonstrated significant growth post-treatment on 2 of 12 measures of resilience, including sleep and coping skills frequency, but a decrease on one brief measure of resilience. In terms of implementation, teachers generally found the intervention positive (averaging 4.21 out of 5 on all rating 4 domains), with the highest scores for its appropriateness for students and this alternative school, strong scores for its acceptability and feasibility, and the lowest scores for its effectiveness. Teachers appreciated the relevance of the content, the focus on psychoeducation and coping skills, the iterative design/pilot/revise process used when building the course, the provision of clear lesson plans and students sharing feelings of empowerment because of the course. To improve the intervention, teachers wanted increased integration of both current events related to equity and the cultural representativeness of the video elements of the curriculum, and sought to decrease disruptions to the intervention based on their competing professional roles while teaching, and irregular student attendance.
