Book excerpt: The Canadian Heart Health Initiative (CHHI) is a multi-level strategy for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, the major cause of death & disability and of rising health care costs in Canada. This report begins with an overview of the CHHI, including the strategies employed. Chapters two & three present data from a process evaluation of the CHHI, including resource inputs to the provincial heart health programs, a profile of the projects undertaken relative to the key strategies used, the risk factors addressed, the populations targeted, and settings through which interventions were delivered. Chapter four focusses on lessons learned and reviews contextual influences, resource issues, organizational management structures, evaluation strategies, and technical support provided. The final chapter presents conclusions of the evaluation & makes recommendations for future action.

Book excerpt: This report considers the biological and behavioral mechanisms that may underlie the pathogenicity of tobacco smoke. Many Surgeon General's reports have considered research findings on mechanisms in assessing the biological plausibility of associations observed in epidemiologic studies. Mechanisms of disease are important because they may provide plausibility, which is one of the guideline criteria for assessing evidence on causation. This report specifically reviews the evidence on the potential mechanisms by which smoking causes diseases and considers whether a mechanism is likely to be operative in the production of human disease by tobacco smoke. This evidence is relevant to understanding how smoking causes disease, to identifying those who may be particularly susceptible, and to assessing the potential risks of tobacco products.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To be published in co-operation with the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada Every seven minutes in Canada, someone dies from heart disease or stroke. When we think of the typical heart patient, we imagine an older, grey-haired, overstressed man, but the face of heart disease has changed. Heart disease and stroke are now equal-opportunity killers. Despite the fact that heart disease kills more Canadian women each year than all forms of cancer combined, it’s not a problem that’s widely talked about. Dr. Beth Abramson is passionate about changing this by providing Canadian families with the knowledge to prevent, recognize and recover from heart disease. As a respected cardiologist and a national spokesperson for the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, Dr. Abramson has spoken to doctors, patients and people across the country about the realities of heart health. Some of what she has to say is quite surprising, like the fact that there’s no real physical difference between a woman’s heart attack and a man’s, just a psychological difference in how we view them. Heart Health for Canadians is the definitive book on heart disease for the thousands of Canadian women and men who are diagnosed each year. It takes a full-spectrum approach to heart disease, covering prevention, symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, recovery, new research and alternative therapies. It educates Canadians on how to be better advocates for themselves and for their loved ones by offering support and guidance through our complicated healthcare system. And it offers more complete information on women’s heart health. You never want a family member to be diagnosed with heart disease; but if it happens, you want Heart Health for Canadians by your side.

Book excerpt: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US, with more women dying from heart disease than men. Women may have different presentation from men and often need a different approach to diagnosis and treatment. There are also unique topics of management of heart disease in women, including issues during pregnancy, lactation, and menopause. Many different health care providers, as well as cardiologists are involved in treating these patients. A manual reviewing diagnosis and treatment of cardiac disease in women would help providers without specific cardiology training to deliver care with greater efficiency. A practical and comprehensive guide geared towards these providers would be a highly practical and valuable resource that would be utilized in everyday practice in offices that include urban clinics, general medicine offices, obstetrics and gynecology offices, as well as in the surgical subspecialties. This book will be a highly practical resource that can be directly applied to the issues that arise in everyday practice. There is no available book on the market that focuses on a broader approach to cardiac disease in women or focuses on non-cardiology providers (and their trainees) who have the need to know more about treatment of cardiovascular disease in women.

Book excerpt: Data suggest that exposure to secondhand smoke can result in heart disease in nonsmoking adults. Recently, progress has been made in reducing involuntary exposure to secondhand smoke through legislation banning smoking in workplaces, restaurants, and other public places. The effect of legislation to ban smoking and its effects on the cardiovascular health of nonsmoking adults, however, remains a question. Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects reviews available scientific literature to assess the relationship between secondhand smoke exposure and acute coronary events. The authors, experts in secondhand smoke exposure and toxicology, clinical cardiology, epidemiology, and statistics, find that there is about a 25 to 30 percent increase in the risk of coronary heart disease from exposure to secondhand smoke. Their findings agree with the 2006 Surgeon General's Report conclusion that there are increased risks of coronary heart disease morbidity and mortality among men and women exposed to secondhand smoke. However, the authors note that the evidence for determining the magnitude of the relationship between chronic secondhand smoke exposure and coronary heart disease is not very strong. Public health professionals will rely upon Secondhand Smoke Exposure and Cardiovascular Effects for its survey of critical epidemiological studies on the effects of smoking bans and evidence of links between secondhand smoke exposure and cardiovascular events, as well as its findings and recommendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world is witnessing a burgeoning global epidemic of chronic cerebro- and cardiovascular disease and depression disorders. The reader will find this comprehensive book to be a long-needed, up-to-date knowledge base on these increasingly recognized comorbid conditions that have long-term consequences for individual function and well-being and society in general. This comprehensive book outlines the complex and bidirectional relationship between various types of depression and cerebro- and cardiovascular diseases. It is written by a range of experts in the field, including psychiatrists, cardiologists, neuroscientists, psychologists, and epidemiologists, with the aim of presenting and discussing the most recent evidence on the pathophysiology, neurobiology, and clinical presentation of these common and disabling comorbid conditions and the available pharmacological, psychological, and behavioral interventions. By elucidating the underlying clinical and neurobiological mechanisms in the brain and the rich interplay between the body and the brain biology, the book brings together the latest knowledge of this overlapping area in Psychiatry and Cardiology. The clear descriptions of evidence-based approaches to clinical treatment ensure that it will serve as both an up-to-date overview and a future guide for practicing clinicians and graduate students.
