Book excerpt: Abstract: The report of the Task Force on Consumer Health Education provides guidelines to policy development in disease prevention, health promotion, and health education. The report emphasized the relation of health status to life style and the timeliness of the current challenge of consumer health education. Current programs, practices, and problems in health education are summarized and analyzed. Major themes of the report are: 1) individual behavior and life style, influenced by internal and external factors, play a major role in health, illness, disability, and premature death; 2) the individual is responsible for informed choices in health care and behavior change; 3) health education is multidisciplinary; 4) empirical research is needed to assess the long-term effects of health education; 5) substantial resources should be committed to health education; 6) the Federal Government has the responsibility to promote health education and assess the effects of national policy; and 7) health education must be rigorously researched and developed, adequately financed and throughly evaluated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Educational Trends Exposed explains and critically reviews eighteen of the most prevalent trends sweeping schools, colleges and universities over the last decade and beyond. Amid the buzz from news outlets, websites and social media peddling ‘this works’ approaches and ‘quick fix’ solutions, this book provides educators with a practical tool to help answer important questions such as: what does this trend actually involve? Is it worth the investment of time and resources? Does it work – what does research say? Do the claimed benefits to students outweigh any downsides? In this timely book, David Armstrong and Gill Armstrong cast a critical, expert eye over these trends, referencing the latest research and offering a framework for considering educational trends, empowering readers as informed critical consumers. They argue that trends disclose deeper truths about the state and direction of contemporary public education in Australia, England and the US and provide original, thought-provoking analysis. This book demonstrates that a greater understanding of trends can teach some important lessons, including how parents, teachers and educational decisions makers can agitate and collaborate for a modernised and more socially equitable education system. Educational Trends Exposed is essential reading for pre- and in-service teachers, and all educational decision makers who are faced with a choice of which trend, if any, to follow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: School choice seeks to create a competitive arena in which public schools will attain academic excellence, encourage individual student performance, and achieve social balance. In debating the feasibility of this market approach to improving school systems, analysts have focused primarily on schools as suppliers of education, but an important question remains: Will parents be able to function as "smart consumers" on behalf of their children? Here a highly respected team of social scientists provides extensive empirical evidence on how parents currently do make these choices. Drawn from four different types of school districts in New York City and suburban New Jersey, their findings not only stress the importance of parental decision-making and involvement to school performance but also clarify the issues of school choice in ways that bring much-needed balance to the ongoing debate. The authors analyze what parents value in education, how much they know about schools, how well they can match what they say they want in schools with what their children get, how satisfied they are with their children's schools, and how their involvement in the schools is affected by the opportunity to choose. They discover, most notably, that low-income parents value education as much as, if not more than, high-income parents, but do not have access to the same quality of school information. This problem comes under sensitive, thorough scrutiny as do a host of other important topics, from school performance to segregation to children at risk of being left behind.
