Book excerpt: Pots are baited fishing gears that are growing in use as a tool for harvesting Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL). To study how cod behaviours affect pot efficiency, I used underwater video cameras to assess two models of pot deployed in the Fogo Island fishery. Cod made few entry attempts relative to the number of approaches, and only 22% of entry attempts were successful. The majority of approaches, entry attempts, and successful entrances occurred from the down-current direction, and 25% of cod were able to escape following capture. Following video analysis, I made modifications to existing pots, and created a new design. I then collected catch and length data, across five models of pot, over two years, to determine the optimal design for a re-emergent cod fishery in NL. All five pots caught cod effectively, but the new and modified pots caught the most per deployment, and increasing mesh size was effective at reducing the number of undersized fish caught. This thesis demonstrates that modifications can have a substantial impact on catch rates, that potting gear is fundamentally sound, and fishermen can select a pot that is most appropriate to their needs.

Book excerpt: The Newfoundland and Labrador cod fishery was once the most successful commercial fishery in the world. When it collapsed in 1992, many pointed to failures in management, such as uncontrolled harvesting, as likely culprits. Managed Annihilation makes the case that the idea of natural resource management itself was the problem. The collapse occurred when the fisheries were state-managed and still, two decades later, there is no recovery in sight. Although the collapse raised doubts among policy-makers about their ability to understand and control nature, their ultimate goal of control through management has not wavered and has been transferred from wild fish to fishermen and farmed cod.

Book excerpt: The northern cod have been almost wiped out. Once the most plentiful fish on the Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland, the cod is now on the brink of extinction, and tens of thousands of people in Atlantic Canada have been left without work by a 1992 moratorium on fishing the stock. Today, the Pacific salmon stocks are in similar trouble - victims of the same blind, stupid greed. Angry, accusatory fingers have been pointed at various possible culprits for the collapse of the cod - at the Spanish and Portuguese, who for hundreds of years sent ever-bigger fleets to the Grand Banks; at the factory-freezer trawlers, which "vacuumed" the ocean floor for the prized fish; at those inshore fishermen who circumvented the rules governing the fishery; at the federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which is responsible for managing the fishery; at the harp seal, the cod's competitor for food, whose numbers have exploded in recent years; even at Nature, for lowering the temperature of the ocean. In "Lament for an Ocean, the award-winning true-crime writer Michael Harris investigates the real causes of the most wanton destruction of a natural resource in North American history since the buffalo were wiped off the face of the prairies. The story he carefully unfolds is the sorry tale of how, despite the repeated and urgent warnings of ocean scientists, the northern cod was ruthlessly exploited.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to challenge long-standing assumptions on Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua) feeding around Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, and provide information that will be useful for the next generation of ecosystem-based models. Using stomach content analysis and published cod stomach data I address two primary questions: Do cod cease feeding during spawning? Does the cod diet reflect changes in prey assemblages in the ecosystem? Spatial and temporal diet variation was additionally analyzed. Regional variation was paramount such that diet diversity, mirroring ecosystem diversity, increased with decreasing latitude. Contrary to current assumptions, feeding continued through spawning. The stomach content contribution of shrimp reflect environmental trends in these prey assemblages over the past 65 years, while crab, a minor part of the cod diet, does not reflect abundance changes. Capelin appeared preferably consumed when encountered. Cod are not complete generalist feeders but select for certain energy rich prey.

Book excerpt: This dissertation aims to understand the history of, and possible alternatives to, managerial responses to socio-ecological issues by examining one of the largest natural resource management failures of the twentieth century--the collapse of the Northern cod fisheries off Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. In 1992, the Northern cod fishery off Newfoundland and Labrador (the world's largest ground fishery) was shut down. The Northern cod had been reduced to 1% of their historic spawning biomass and cod fishing as a way of life had come to an end after a 500 year history. The dissertation develops and applies a critical theory of managerial ecology to explore the history and consequences of managerial ideas and interventions into the cod fisheries. It argues that managerial ecology is deeply implicated not only in leading to the collapse of the cod fisheries and the failure of cod stocks to recover, but also in creating new ecological and social problems that cannot be solved by new and improved managerial designs. The dissertation describes the ascendance of managerial ecology within Newfoundland and Labrador cod fisheries beginning with the history of the birth of the fisheries management idea and its development up to the 1992 moratorium on cod fishing. Developments post-1992 are then presented, emphasizing the tendency of politicians, bureaucrats and academic researchers to offer innovative managerial strategies for the cod fishery rather than calling into question managerial relationships themselves and proposing fundamental alternatives. It illustrates how under post-92 reforms, cod have become managed as elements in complex ecosystems as opposed to single species populations; how traditional fishers who want to continue fishing are required to become self-managing professional fish harvesters; and how industrialists and government bureaucrats promote the idea that the wild cod fishery should be replaced by industrial fish farming. The dissertation concludes with a reflection on the development of managerial ecology in the face of natural resource collapse. Suggestions are made for future research directions in environmental studies that move beyond managerial ecology by focussing on lessons emerging from complex ecosystem science that challenge the efficacy of management as well as normative-political arguments that question its legitimacy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rebuilding depleted stocks is a central part of the fisheries governance agenda. By analysing the available literature, Part 1 of "Rebuilding of marine fisheries" provides a global review of the emergence of the rebuilding paradigm, its key concepts, the trends in fishery resources, and the empirical evidence available on stocks depletion, collapse and rebuilding. It addresses the bio-ecological, economic, and human dimensions of rebuilding or restoration of stocks, multispecies assemblages and habitats/ecosystems and touches on the need for rebuilding at the whole sector level when depletion has become widespread and chronic. The human imensions of stocks and fisheries are given particular attention, looking at conflicting objectives, the bio-economy of rebuilding, its costs and benefits, and the distributional effects of the related reform among actors with their potential social consequences in the short and long terms. Governance is addressed in detail: legal and policy frameworks; rationale and objectives of a rebuilding regime; alternative rebuilding strategies; reference values and protocols; regulatory time-frames; risk management and harvest control rules; impacts of climatic oscillations; management tool-box; implementation guidance and performance evaluation. The document ends with a review of the determinants of success of a rebuilding programme."--Publisher's description for part 1.

Book excerpt: Atlantic Fishes of Canada is intended as a replacement volume for Fishes of the Atlantic Coast of Canada, which was published in 1966 as Bulletin 155 of the Fisheries Research Board of Canada. The major portion of the present book is concerned with the biology, distribution, and/or economics of the fishes occurring off our Atlantic coast. Most accounts are well documented, necessitating an extensive reference list, which we hope will prove useful in itself. A checklist and keys are also presented for students or anyone concerned with the kinds and identification of fishes making up the fauna of the region. Many changes have occurred since 1966, not only in the state of our knowledge of the fauna and its biology but also in the management of the resource. Changes in the management are well documented in the section 'Atlantic Coast Fisheries and Fisheries Research in the Last 25 Years.'
