Book Synopsis Promenade of the Gods by : Koji Suzuki
Download or read book Promenade of the Gods written by Koji Suzuki and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2008-08-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It begins with a woman's search to find her husband, who disappears after watching a TV show. She enlists the aid of her husband's best friend, and together they discover that the famous female personality of the TV show disappeared after the same evening's broadcast as well. The duo's search leads to a battle within a religious cult. Each answer brings only more questions, until the story's stunning final solution is revealed. Promenade of the Gods is a parallel piece to Koji Suzuki's successful Ring series and even contains some sl nods to his famous work. Its theme of planet-wide subjugation via technology echoes that in Ring, and like Ring, the way in which the pieces of the mystery in Promenade come together only materialize in the book's final moments, culminating in a most unsettling conclusion.

Book Synopsis The Brooklyn Heights Promenade by : Henrik Krogius
Download or read book The Brooklyn Heights Promenade written by Henrik Krogius and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-18 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featured in films and on television and used as a backdrop to countless photos, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade offers the public a view that is usually reserved for the rich at the top of a tower. From this one-third-mile stretch, locals and tourists take in the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and New York Harbor. But its history is less harmonious. Plans by the powerful Robert Moses to run the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway through a resistant neighborhood led to contention and an unforeseen eventual compromise. In this volume, Brooklyn Heights Press editor Henrik Krogius presents this history, along with his articles that document the fate of the Promenade over the years.

Book Synopsis American Antebellum Fiddling by : Chris Goertzen
Download or read book American Antebellum Fiddling written by Chris Goertzen and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2020-02-28 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume is the only book solely about antebellum American fiddling. It includes more than 250 easy-to-read and clearly notated fiddle tunes alongside biographies of fiddlers and careful analysis of their personal tune collections. The reader learns what the tunes of the day were, what the fiddlers’ lives were like, and as much as can be discovered about how fiddling sounded then. Personal histories and tunes’ biographies offer an accessible window on a fascinating period, on decades of growth and change, and on rich cultural history made audible. In the decades before the Civil War, American fiddling thrived mostly in oral tradition, but some fiddlers also wrote down versions of their tunes. This overlap between oral and written traditions reveals much about the sounds and social contexts of fiddling at that time. In the early 1800s, aspiring young violinists maintained manuscript collections of tunes they intended to learn. These books contained notations of oral-tradition dance tunes—many of them melodies that predated and would survive this era—plus plenty of song melodies and marches. Chris Goertzen takes us into the lives and repertoires of two such young men, Arthur McArthur and Philander Seward. Later, in the 1830s to 1850s, music publications grew in size and shrunk in cost, so fewer musicians kept personal manuscript collections. But a pair of energetic musicians did. Goertzen tells the stories of two remarkable violinist/fiddlers who wrote down many hundreds of tunes and whose notations of those tunes are wonderfully detailed, Charles M. Cobb and William Sidney Mount. Goertzen closes by examining particularly problematic collections. He takes a fresh look at George Knauff’s Virginia Reels and presents and analyzes an amateur musician’s own questionable but valuable transcriptions of his grandfather’s fiddling, which reaches back to antebellum western Virginia.
Book Synopsis Urban Waterfront Promenades by : Elizabeth Macdonald
Download or read book Urban Waterfront Promenades written by Elizabeth Macdonald and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some cities have long-treasured waterfront promenades, many cities have recently built ones, and others have plans to create them as opportunities arise. Beyond connecting people with urban water bodies, waterfront promenades offer many social and ecological benefits. They are places for social gathering, for physical activity, for relief from the stresses of urban life, and where the unique transition from water to land eco-systems can be nurtured and celebrated. The best are inclusive places, welcoming and accessible to diverse users. This book explores urban waterfront promenades worldwide. It presents 38 promenade case studies—as varied as Vancouver’s extensive network that has been built over the last century, the classic promenades in Rio de Janeiro, the promenades in Stockholm’s recently built Hammarby Sjöstad eco-district, and the Ma On Shan promenade in the Hong Kong New Territories—analyzing their physical form, social use, the circumstances under which they were built, the public policies that brought them into being, and the threats from sea level rise and the responses that have been made. Based on wide research, Urban Waterfront Promenades examines the possibilities for these public spaces and offers design and planning approaches useful for professionals, community decision-makers, and scholars. Extensive plans, cross sections, and photographs permit visual comparison.
