Download or read book CORBUSIER, LE written by Marylène Ferrand and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1923/24, Henry Fruges - an industrialist from Bordeaux decided to commission Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret with a "small workers' housing estate" in Lege and a garden city in Pessac, comprising 130 to 150 houses and shops. The construction of these two housing schemes between 1924 and 1926 fitted neatly into the architects' research on the machine a habiter and standardisation. Lege and Pessac thus acted as a laboratory for gauging the public's opinion with regards to applying standardisation and mass-production techniques to housing estates. This quest for a standard plan also induced exploratory study on "a new plan for the city" and it is in this respect that Pessac stands unique among Le Corbusier's oeuvres.

Book Synopsis Design of the Unfinished by : Luciano Crespi
Download or read book Design of the Unfinished written by Luciano Crespi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-07 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book aims to provide city administrators and planners with a tool to accompany them in experimenting with the regeneration of no longer used parts of the built heritage, called leftovers, by adopting an innovative approach. A new and radically different form of project, with the task of proposing a new aesthetic code and a style of thought aimed at creating shelters for nomads of the third millennium. In the design field, the 21st century will be destined to measure itself against temporariness and precariousness, also in terms of aesthetic practices. Based on this hypothesis, the text identifies the design of the unfinished as the perspective for attributing to the leftovers a character, which is representative of the conditions of the just begun century. Through a transdisciplinary, exhibition-like and reversible approach, the elements of degradation of the existing work are welcomed in the project as a "gift", to be translated into a syntax aimed at giving form and meaning to the internal and external environments, with the inclusion of "additional components".

Book Synopsis The Global Politics of Poverty in Canada by : Will Langford
Download or read book The Global Politics of Poverty in Canada written by Will Langford and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-01-16 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s and 1970s, in the midst of the Cold War and an international decolonization movement, development advocates believed that poverty could be ended, at home and abroad. The Global Politics of Poverty in Canada explores the relationship between poverty, democracy, and development during this remarkable period. Will Langford analyzes three Canadian development programs that unfolded on local, regional, and international scales. He reveals the interconnections of anti-poverty activism carried out by the Company of Young Canadians among Métis in northern Alberta and francophones in Montreal, by the Cape Breton Development Corporation, and by Canadian University Service Overseas in Tanzania. In dialogue with the New Left, liberal reformers committed to development programs they believed would empower the poor to confront their own poverty and thereby foster a more meaningful democracy. However, democracy and development proved to be fundamentally contested, and development programs stopped short of amending capitalist social relations and the inequalities they engendered. The Global Politics of Poverty in Canada explores how Canadians engaged in informal and formal politics in the course of their everyday lives, locally and transnationally. Langford provides an enduring record of otherwise fleeting anti-poverty programs and their effects: the lived activism and opinions of development workers and ordinary people.

Book excerpt: Rudy Ricciotti was born in 1952 in Algier. He studied in Geneva and Marseilles before opening his own architectural office in Bandol (Bouches-du-Rhone) in 1980. His early works are characterized by a radical, carefree approach, displaying a variety of forms and full of energy. Since the beginning of the 1990s Ricciotti has been influenced by the Arte Povera and his buildings have become more austere and functional, making use of minimalist and "lowtech" solutions. With the opening of the concert hall in Potsdam, and the construction of a foot bridge in Seoul, Ricciotti has finally found international recognition. Our publication is a detailed yet critical analysis of his work to date. The first monograph on the work of Rudy Ricciotti whose architecture is extravagant yet radiates Mediterranean simplicity, is powerfully expressive yet gently ironic.
