Book excerpt: Many integral equations arising in electric and magnetic field problems have Green's function kernels, which cause difficulty in integration because of their essential singularities. By performing a simple coordinate rotation, these singularities can be shifted entirely onto one coordinate axis, so that iterated weighted numerical quadratures may be applied to evaluate exactly the projective representation of such integral operators on suitable finite-dimensional function spaces. Standard projective methods may therefore be applied to solve such integral equations accurately with very little computational effort. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book is based on the contributions to a course, entitled Applied Magnetism, which was the 25th Course of the International School of Materials Science and Technology. The Course was held as a NATO Advanced Study Institute at the Ettore Majorana Centre in Erice, Sicily, Italy between the 1st and 12th July 1992, and attracted almost 70 participants from 15 different countries. The book deals with the theory, experiments and applications of the main topical areas of applied magnetism. These selected areas include the physics of magnetic recording, magnetic and magneto-optic recording devices, systems and media, magnetic fine particles, magnetic separation, domains and domain walls in soft magnetic materials, permanent magnets, magnetoresistance, thin film magneto-optics, and finally, microwave, optical and computational magnetics. The material is organised into I 0 self-contained chapters which together provide a comprehensive coverage of the subject of applied magnetism. The aim is to emphasise the connection between the fundamental theoretical concepts, key experiments and the important technological developments which have been achieved in this field up to the present time. Moreover, when and where possible, pointers to future trends are indicated which hopefully, together with the background material, will promote further advancement of research. The organizing committee would like to acknowledge the sponsorship of the NATO Scientific Affairs Division, the National Science Foundation of the USA, the Science and Engineering Research Council of the UK, the Italian Ministry of Education, the Italian Ministry of University and Scientific Research and the Sicilian Regional Government.

Book excerpt: Integral Equation Methods for Electromagnetic and Elastic Waves is an outgrowth of several years of work. There have been no recent books on integral equation methods. There are books written on integral equations, but either they have been around for a while, or they were written by mathematicians. Much of the knowledge in integral equation methods still resides in journal papers. With this book, important relevant knowledge for integral equations are consolidated in one place and researchers need only read the pertinent chapters in this book to gain important knowledge needed for integral equation research. Also, learning the fundamentals of linear elastic wave theory does not require a quantum leap for electromagnetic practitioners. Integral equation methods have been around for several decades, and their introduction to electromagnetics has been due to the seminal works of Richmond and Harrington in the 1960s. There was a surge in the interest in this topic in the 1980s (notably the work of Wilton and his coworkers) due to increased computing power. The interest in this area was on the wane when it was demonstrated that differential equation methods, with their sparse matrices, can solve many problems more efficiently than integral equation methods. Recently, due to the advent of fast algorithms, there has been a revival in integral equation methods in electromagnetics. Much of our work in recent years has been in fast algorithms for integral equations, which prompted our interest in integral equation methods. While previously, only tens of thousands of unknowns could be solved by integral equation methods, now, tens of millions of unknowns can be solved with fast algorithms. This has prompted new enthusiasm in integral equation methods. Book excerpt: Using the method of moments to solve the electric and magnetic field integral equations for the currents on a PEC surface requires a large number of unknowns to capture the current's rapid spatial variation across the surface. Rao-Wilton-Glisson (RWG) vector basis functions 1 have been successfully used for the past twenty years 1, 2, 3,.... Unfortunately, the required number of unknowns is on the order of 100 per square wavelength making electrically large problems impractical. For large smooth objects, the rapid spatial variation in the current is due to phase variations rather than magnitude variations. Thus, using asymptotic phase (AP) basis functions can drastically reduce the number of unknowns 3 for large, smooth metallic bodies. The A') basis flinction incorporates the anticipated phase, hence represents a more efficient basis function for a large class of problems. However, using RWG basis functions for monostatic calculations is more efficient since the matrix entries need not be recomputed for each new incidence angle, as is the case for an AP expansion. One can combine the methods; selecting RWG or AP basis functions for a given geometry based on an element's location within the geometry. This allows the relaxation of mesh density in smooth flat regions not near the discontinuities resulting in a significant reduction of unknowns. This research shows that combining functions is highly efficient and the effectiveness of this method depends on the geometry of application.

Book excerpt: The problem of scattering of electromagnetic waves by a closed, bounded, smooth, perfectly conducting surface immersed in vacuum is considered and a method for determining the scattered electric and magnetic field vectors (solutions of the homogeneous Maxwell equations satisfying the well known boundary conditions on the surface and the Silver-Muller radiation condition at infinity) everywhere exterior to the surface is presented. Specifically, two integral equations are derived, one for each scattered field vector. These equations are coupled. The kernels of the equations are dyadic functions of position and can be derived from the solutions of standard interior and exterior potential problems. Once these dyadic kernels are determined for a particular surface geometry the integral equations can be solved by iteration for the wave number k being sufficiently small. Alternatively, the scattered fields in the integral equations may be expanded in a power series of the wave number k and recursion formulas be found for the unknown coefficients in the expansions by equating equal power of k. As a check, the method is applied to the problem of scattering of a plane electromagnetic wave by a perfectly conducting sphere. The first two terms in the low frequency expansions of the electric and magnetic scattered fields are found and are shown to be in complete agreement with known results. (Author).

Abstract: Inspired by the important low frequency applications, such as the integrate circuits, the nano electromagnetic compatibility and quantum optics, several aspects of the computational electromagnetic low-frequency problems in surface integral equation (SIE) are carefully investigated in this dissertation. Firstly a capacitive model is studied that the convergence of the matrix system is co-determined by both the condition of the matrix and the righthand-side excitation. In a current solution, the weighted contributions from different singular vectors are not only decided by the corresponding singular values but also the right-hand side. The convergence of the capacitive problems is guaranteed by the fact that the singular vectors corresponding to the small singular values are not excited under the delta-gap source. The dominant charge currents are enough to capture the capacitive physics. Detailed spectral analysis with right-hand side effect validates the proposed theory. Secondly, in order to overcome the low-frequency inaccuracy problem for open capacitive structures in CMP-EFIE, a perturbed CMP-EFIE is proposed to extract accurate high-order current at low frequencies. Further study of the capacitive problems in CMP-EFIE utilizes a simplified two-term system by removing the contribution from the hypersingular preconditioned term, which captures the correct physics without doing the perturbation steps. The afore-built right-hand side analysis theory is applied here to explain the stability and accuracy of the simplified CMP-EFIE system. Thirdly, a point testing system is constructed to eliminate the nontrivial nullspaces of the static MFIE systems by enforcing extra zero magnetic flux conditions at the testing points locations. The projection of the current solution onto the magnetostatic nullspaces is truncated accordingly, thus the system convergence can be much improved without losing any accuracy. Finally, the electromagnetic solution is obtained from a potential-based integral equation solver, capturing electrostatic physics from the scalar potential formulation and magnetostatic physics from the vector potential formulation. The combination of the two formulations reveals the correct solution and physics at low frequencies. And the equations, formulated with the potential quantities, make it possible to couple with quantum effects theories. The resulting system appears to be a symmetric saddle point problem, where the efficiency of the iterative solver can be well-solved by a typical appropriate constraint preconditioner. The stability and capability of the new system in solving different kinds of electromagnetic problems are validated over a wide range of frequency range. The research topics in this dissertation cover different aspects of low frequency integral equation solvers, aiming at fast, stable, wide-band and accurate integral algorithms. Book excerpt: This lecture provides a tutorial introduction to the Nyström and locally-corrected Nyström methods when used for the numerical solutions of the common integral equations of two-dimensional electromagnetic fields. These equations exhibit kernel singularities that complicate their numerical solution. Classical and generalized Gaussian quadrature rules are reviewed. The traditional Nyström method is summarized, and applied to the magnetic field equation for illustration. To obtain high order accuracy in the numerical results, the locally-corrected Nyström method is developed and applied to both the electric field and magnetic field equations. In the presence of target edges, where current or charge density singularities occur, the method must be extended through the use of appropriate singular basis functions and special quadrature rules. This extension is also described.
