Book excerpt: The Target Support Facility for a Neutrino Producing Research Facility extends from the pretarget, primary beam focusing region to the end of the decay channel. Technical components include the target, beam absorber, and solenoid magnetic-field focusing system. While the ultimate goal is to target about 4 MW of proton beam in the target area., smaller values and different target materials (e.g., low Z) are considered to facilitate the first step. As detailed in this report, a carbon target was chosen with an incident primary beam power of 1.5 MW, The target is embedded in a high-field solenoid magnet of 20 T, followed by a transition section channel, where the field tapers down to 1.25 T. An iterative design process has been carried out which optimizes Monte Carlo code flux projections with realistic magnetic-field parameters. The severe radiation environment and component shielding requirements strongly influence design choices. The overall system design includes the capture and decay channel solenoids, the design parameters of which were provided by the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. This design balances resistive and superconducting magnet contributions. Facility requirements, including shielding, remote handling, radioactive water system, etc. are based on the final design goal of 4 MW. The extent of the Target Support Facility and radiation-handling equipment includes the 50-m decay channel, where remote-handling operations are also required.

Book excerpt: A conceptual design for a neutrino-producing facility is presented, including the mercury-jet target system, beam absorber, and facility for the target/capture region. The mercury system is a closed loop that includes a containment structure in the high-magnetic field region, a mercury pool beam absorber, conventional equipment such as magnetic-coupled pumps, valves, a heat exchanger, and a special nozzle insert. The superconducting solenoids in the target region are protected from nuclear heating and radiation damage with water-cooled tungsten-carbide shielding; the decay channel solenoids are protected with water-cooled steel shielding. The target region and decay channel have high-neutron fluxes resulting in components that are highly activated. Therefore, the facility configuration is based on remotely maintaining the target system and the magnets, as well as providing sufficient shielding for personnel. Summaries of cost estimates for the target system, magnet shielding, maintenance equipment, and the facility are also presented.

Book excerpt: Neutrino beams from the decay of muons in a storage ring offer the prospect of very high flux, well-understood spectra, and equal numbers of electron and muon neutrinos, as desirable for detailed exploration of neutrino oscillations via long baseline detectors [1]. Such beams require. large numbers of muons, and hence a high performance target station at which a 1-4 MW proton beam of 16-24 GeV impinges on a compact target, all inside a high field solenoid channel to capture as much of the phase volume of soft pions as possible. A first concept was based on a carbon target, as reported in 2000 the Neutrino Factory Study-I [2]. A higher performance option based on a free mercury jet has been studied in 2001 as part of the Neutrino Factory Feasibility Study-II [3,4]. An overview of a mercury jet target facility is presented here, including requirements, design concept and summaries of simulated performance. Further details are presented in related papers at this conference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point for the International Design Study for the Neutrino Factory (the IDS-NF) was the output of the earlier International Scoping Study for a future Neutrino Factory and super-beam facility (the ISS). The accelerator facility described in section 2 incorporates the improvements that have been derived from the substantial amount of work carried out within the Accelerator Working Group. Highlights of these improvements include: (1) Initial concepts for the implementation of the proton driver at each of the three example sites, CERN, FNAL, and RAL; (2) Detailed studies of the energy deposition in the target area; (3) A reduction in the length of the muon beam phase-rotation and bunching systems; (4) Detailed analyses of the impact of the risk that stray magnetic field in the accelerating cavities in the ionization cooling channel will reduce the maximum operating gradient. Several alternative ionization-cooling lattices have been developed as fallback options to mitigate this technical risk; (5) Studies of particle loss in the muon front-end and the development of strategies to mitigate the deleterious effects of such losses; (6) The development of more complete designs for the muon linac and re-circulating linacs; (7) The development of a design for the muon FFAG that incorporates insertions for injection and extraction; and (8) Detailed studies of diagnostics in the decay ring. Other sub-systems have undergone a more 'incremental' evolution; an indication that the design of the Neutrino Factory has achieved a degree of maturity. The design of the neutrino detectors described in section 3 has been optimized and the Detector Working Group has made substantial improvements to the simulation and analysis of the Magnetized Iron Neutrino Detector (MIND) resulting in an improvement in the overall neutrino-detection efficiency and a reduction in the neutrino-energy threshold. In addition, initial consideration of the engineering of the MIND has generated a design that is feasible and a finite element analysis of the toroidal magnetic field to produce a realistic field map has been carried out. Section 3 also contains, for the first time, a specification for the near-detector systems and a demonstration that the neutrino flux can be determined with a precision of 1% through measurements of inverse muon decay at the near detector. The performance of the facility, the work of the Physics and Performance Evaluation Group, is described in section 1. The effect of the improved MIND performance is to deliver a discovery reach for CP-invariance violation in the lepton sector, the determination of the mass hierarchy, and of?13 that extends down to values of sin2 2?13 H"5 x 10−5 and is robust against systematic uncertainties. In addition, the improved neutrino-energy threshold has allowed an indicative analysis of the kind of re-optimization of the facility that could be carried out should?13 be found close to the current upper bound. The results presented in section 1 demonstrate that the discovery reach as well as the precision with which the oscillation parameters can be measured at the baseline Neutrino Factory is superior to that of other proposed facilities for all possible values of sin2 2?13.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Neutrino Factory is an important tool in the long-term neutrino physics program. Substantial effort is put internationally into designing this facility in order to achieve desired performance within the allotted budget. This accelerator is a secondary beam machine: neutrinos are produced by means of the decay of muons. Muons, in turn, are produced by the decay of pions, produced by hitting the target by a beam of accelerated protons suitable for acceleration. Due to the physics of this process, extra conditioning of the pion beam coming from the target is needed in order to effectively perform subsequent acceleration. The subsystem of the Neutrino Factory that performs this conditioning is called Front End, its main performance characteristic is the number of the produced muons.

Book excerpt: The design concept for the integration of the target and the focusing horn system for the proposed BNL neutrino oscillation experiment is described in this paper. Also presented are issues associated with the functionality and thermo-mechanical response of the selected target intercepting the 28 GeV protons of the 1 MW upgraded AGS beam, the loading and mechanical response of the focusing horn subjected to high currents and energy deposited due to beam/target interaction, the integration of the two systems, and the heat removal schemes. The proposed target intercepts the 8.9 x 10{sup 13}, 28 GeV protons with a 2.5 Hz cycle time over a spot that encloses the 3{sigma} of the beam. In the baseline. design the inner conductor of the aluminum horn encloses the target while allowing for an annular space for forced cooling. Approximately 250 kA pulse of current of 20{micro}s duration will flow through the horn at 2.5 Hz repetition rate inducing high compressive forces, vibration and heat. The paper addresses these issues of horn mechanical response, heat removal scenario, and useful life estimation including radiation damage.

The results of extensive MARS simulations are reported for Megawatt proton beams on a carbon rod and mercury jet in a 20-T hybrid solenoid, followed by a matching section and decay channel. Beam energy and power in a 2 to 30 GeV range, beam spot size, beam and target tilt angle, target material and dimensions, and capture system parameters are optimized to get maximum muon yields at the end of the decay channel. Other particles transported down the beam line are also studied for the purpose of beam instrumentation. Prompt and residual radiation distributions are calculated and analysis of target integrity, quench stability and dynamic heat load to the superconducting coils, radiation damage and activation of materials near the beam is performed. Absorption of showers in the direction of a primary beam is considered.

Using their high intensity sources, physicists undertake, in various ways, extensive searches for new physics beyond the Standard Model, such as tests of supersymmetric grand unification (SUSY-GUT) and precision measurements of the muon and neutrino properties, which will in future extend to ambitious studies such as determination of the three-generation neutrino mixing matrix elements and CP violation in the lepton sector. The physics of this field is advancing, with potential improvements of the sources. Many R&D projects, such as those concerning high intensity, low energy muon sources or a neutrino factory, are being carried out or planned at various places. Some of those topics are included in this book. Contents: Muon Applied Science: Status at the End of the 20th Century (K Nagamine); Lepton Flavor Violation and Supersymmetric Models with Right-Handed Neutrino (D Nomura); Neutrino Oscillation Scenarios and GUT Model Predictions (C Albright); The MECO Experiment (J Sculli); CP Violation and Atmospheric Neutrinos (I Stancu et al.); Neutrino Oscillations with Four Generations (O Yasuda); Ambiguities of Theoretical Parameters and CP/T Violation in Neutrino Factories (M Koike et al.); Testing Neutrino Properties at Long Baseline Experiments and Neutrino Factories (S Pakvasa); Next Generation Water Cherenkov Detector at Kamioka (K Nakamura); and other papers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-term prospects for fully exploring three-flavor mixing in the neutrino sector depend upon an ongoing and increased investment in the appropriate accelerator R & D. Two new concepts have been proposed that would revolutionize neutrino experiments, namely the Neutrino Factory and the Beta Beam facility. These new facilities would dramatically improve our ability to test the three-flavor mixing framework, measure CP violation in the lepton sector, and perhaps determine the neutrino mass hierarchy, and, if necessary, probe extremely small values of the mixing angle [theta][sub 13]. The stunning sensitivity that could be achieved with a Neutrino Factory is described, together with our present understanding of the corresponding sensitivity that might be achieved with a Beta Beam facility. In the Beta Beam case, additional study is required to better understand the optimum Beta Beam energy, and the achievable sensitivity. Neither a Neutrino Factory nor a Beta Beam facility could be built without significant R & D. An impressive Neutrino Factory R & D effort has been ongoing in the U.S. and elsewhere over the last few years and significant progress has been made towards optimizing the design, developing and testing the required accelerator components, and significantly reducing the cost. The recent progress is described here. There has been no corresponding activity in the U.S. on Beta Beam facility design and, given the very limited resources, there is little prospect of starting a significant U.S. Beta Beam R & D effort in the near future. However, the Beta Beam concept is interesting, and progress on its development in Europe should be followed. The Neutrino Factory R & D program has reached a critical stage in which support is required for two crucial international experiments and a third-generation international design study. If this support is forthcoming, a Neutrino Factory could be added to the Neutrino Community's road map in about a decade.

Book excerpt: The Mercury Intense Target Project (MERIT) is a proof-of-principal experiment to determine the feasibility of using a free-jet of Hg as a spallation target in a Neutrino Factory or a Muon Collider facility. The 1-cm-diameter, 20-m/sec jet will be generated inside a 15-Tesla magnetic field, and high-speed optical diagnostics will be used to photograph the interaction between the Hg jet and a 24-GeV proton beam. The experiment is scheduled to be conducted at CERN in 2007. ORNL is responsible for the design, fabrication, and testing of a system to deliver the Hg jet within the confines of the 15-cm magnet bore. This report documents the functional and safety requirements of the Hg system along with descriptions of its interfaces to the other experimental equipment.
