Book Synopsis Progress of Seismology of the Sun and Stars by : Yoji Osaki
Download or read book Progress of Seismology of the Sun and Stars written by Yoji Osaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 1990 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helio- and asteroseismology are fast- developing new fields of research that probe the internal structure of stars. The complicated multi-periodic oscillations are studied from both theoretical and observational points of view. Nine articles review the state of the art, including modeling the sun, excitations of oscillations, inverse problems, and the observations of seismic phenomena. One section is devoted to the seismology of stars, a field of research still in its very early development. In addition the reader will find about forty research papers on these subjects.

Book Synopsis Seismology of the Sun and the Distant Stars by : D.O. Gough

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of modern helioseismology is only ten years old. In 1975 F-L Deubner separated for the first time the spatial and temporal pro perties of the solar five-minute oscillations, and was thus able to measure the dispersion relation for high-degree acoustic modes (p modes). The diagnostic value of these observations was appreciated immediately. Indeed, by comparing the observed relation with computations that had already been carried out by R.K. Ulrich, and subsequently by H. Ando and Y. Osaki, it was recognised that contemporary solar models that had been constructed with the low observed neutrino flux in mind were too hot in their outer layers. Moreover, their convection zones were too shallow. Since that time the observations have improved. There is now good reason to suppose that a sufficiently careful analysis will lead to a direct determination of the helium abundance in the solar convection zone, especially when foreseeable further improvements in the observations have been achieved. The data will also provide useful diagnostics of the uncertain equation of state of partially ionized plasmas, and they might also enable us to measure the large-scale structure of the convec tive flow.

Book Synopsis The Pulsations of the Sun and the Stars by : Jean-Pierre Rozelot
Download or read book The Pulsations of the Sun and the Stars written by Jean-Pierre Rozelot and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-07-03 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of lecture notes brings together the knowledge on pulsations of the Sun and the stars, with a particular emphasis on recent observations and modelling, and on the influence of pulsations of other physical processes. The book begins with an extensive introduction to helioseismology. The solar cycle and gravity modes are discussed before the focus is widened from helioseismology to asteroseismology which is detailed in a series of specific chapters. Based on courses given at a graduate school, these tutorial lecture notes will be of interest and useful to a rather broad audience of scientists and students.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As in the days following Skylab, solar physics came to the end of an era when the So lar Maximum Mission re-entered the earth's atmosphere in December 1989. The 1980s had been a pioneering decade not only in space- and ground-based studies of the solar atmosphere (Solar Maximum Mission, Hinotori, VLA, Big Bear, Nanc;ay, etc.) but also in solar-terrestrial relations (ISEE, AMPTE), and solar interior neutrino and helioseismol ogy studies. The pace of development in related areas of theory (nuclear, atomic, MHD, beam-plasma) has been equally impressive. All of these raised tantalizing further questions about the structure and dynamics of the Sun as the prototypical and best observed star. This Advanced Study Institute was timed at a pivotal point between that decade and the realisation of Yohkoh, Ulysses, SOHO, GRANAT, Coronas, and new ground-based optical facilities such as LEST and GONG, so as to teach and inspire the up and coming young solar researchers of the 1990s. The topics, lecturers, and students were all chosen with this goal in mind, and the result seems to have been highly successful by all reports.
Book Synopsis The Structure of the Sun by : T. Roca Cortes
Download or read book The Structure of the Sun written by T. Roca Cortes and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-08-28 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complex internal structure of the Sun can now be studied in detail through helioseismology and neutrino astronomy. The VI Canary Islands Winter School of Astrophysics was dedicated to examining these powerful new techniques. Based on this meeting, eight specially-written chapters by world-experts are presented in this timely volume. We are shown how the internal composition and dynamical structure of the Sun can be deduced through helioseismology; and how the central temperature can be determined from the flux of solar neutrinos. This volume provides an excellent introduction for graduate students and an up-to-date overview for researchers working on the Sun, neutrino astronomy and helio- and asteroseismology.
Book Synopsis New Eyes to See Inside the Sun and Stars by : Franz-Ludwig Deubner
Download or read book New Eyes to See Inside the Sun and Stars written by Franz-Ludwig Deubner and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-05-31 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cover picture of this volume displays one of the most advanced products of he lioseismic research: a view into the deep interior of the sun, revealing its distinctly non-uniform rotation throughout the entire depth of the convection zone. Just over 20 years ago, the first successful helioseismic experiment disclosed an increase of ro tation velocity in the uppermost one dozen megameters below the photosphere. The stunning progress in depth and detail highlighted by the cover diagram (and by others shown in this volume as well) was made possible by considerable advances in instru mentation, by the development of powerful analytical tools and, foremost, by the involvement of new brains of enthusiastic proselytes and newcomers to the field, in creasing nearly exponentially in number every year. New branches of research widened the scope of "uranoseismology", as e. g. time-distance seismology (the promising av enue towards small-scale and short-time variability), atmospheric seismology (a new look at strange phenomena we have all ways seen, but hardly understood), and finally the growing observational assault on hundreds of individual stars which are either manifestly or supposedly oscillating -i. e. asteroseismology. The formation of numer ous solar and stellar observing networks and, ultimately, space missions like SOHO have greatly promoted the potential of this science. This steady progress was accompanied by workshops, colloquia, and symposia in quick succession.
Book Synopsis The Sun’s Surface and Subsurface by : Jean-Pierre Rozelot
Download or read book The Sun’s Surface and Subsurface written by Jean-Pierre Rozelot and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed of a set of lectures and tutorial reviews, this book stems from a summer school devoted to the gravitational aspects of the sun and their geophysical consequences. Contribitions elaborate on the gravitational distortions of the sun which can be used to gain some knowledge of the sun's interior and surface phenomena but which also influences the sun's irradience and thus ultimately the earth's climate. Last but not least, it is shown that these small distortions constitute a formidable challenge to solar astrometry, and the final part of the book describes the observational difficulties in defining unequivocally the solar diameter.
