Book excerpt: Powder metallurgy literature in the English language includes a large number of books and several thousand articles in various journals. The rate of growth of this literature increases from year to year. It covers well the whole field of powder metallurg- materials, processes and products - with two exceptions: friction and antifriction branches of powder metallurgy. This lack of information has nothing to do with scientific or technical considerations, and definitely has nothing to do with lack of initiative in the development of these materials. The industry concerned with the production of friction and antifriction materials is continually developing new products and techniques and produc tion is steadily growing. However, most companies working on these materials regard their experiences and new advancements as "proprietary" and, for competitive reasons, are not interested in publishing in the technical literature except for very perfunctory and usually highly commercial papers. Very little work on fric tion and antifriction materials is going on in independent labora tories and university laboratories, although fundamental studies in this field offer very interesting aspects.

Book excerpt: Five years ago, the worldwide powder metallurgy fraternity gathered in New York City to attend the first international conference devoted entirely to powder metal lurgy to take place in the United States. It was a tentative venture, entered into by the sponsors with no idea as to whether it would fail or succeed. The only assurances we had were that the metal-powder producing and consuming industries were rapidly expanding and that powder metallurgy was truly becoming one of the international sciences. The 1960 Conference was successful not only in terms of attendance and interest, but also in terms of knowledge gained. The literature had been enriched by the contributions of its participants to foster and encourage this type of world wide exchange. Thus, another such conference was held in 1965-expanded in scope and supplemented by an exhibition of the latest advances in raw materials, processing equipment, and finished products of powder metallurgy. On behalf of the Conference sponsors-the Metal Powder Industries Federa tion, the American Powder Metallurgy Institute, and the Metallurgical Society of AIME-I thank all those who participated and who helped make the 1965 Interna tional Powder Metallurgy Conference a rewarding experience and memorable event in our industry's history. Support of the National Science Foundation, which made it possible for several speakers from abroad to participate in the program, is gratefully acknowledged.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vol. 2 of "Progress in Materials Analysis" contains the lectures of the 12th Colloquium on Materials Analysis, Vienna, May 13-15, 1985. Due to the top level international participation from industry and research insti tutions the proceedings offer a survey of the present state and current trends in materials analysis of high actuality. The major topics covered are surface, micro and trace analysis of materials with a special emphasis on metals but also including other materials like ceramics, semiconductors, polymers. According to the strategy of the meeting attention is focussed on an interdisciplinary approach to materials science - combining analytical chemistry, solid state physics and technol ogy. Therefore progress reports on modern analytical technique like SIMS, SNMS, AES, XPS, Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy, EPMA, STEM, LAMMS, etc. are contained as well as presentations on the development of materials. The majority of the contributions centers on the treatment of important problems in materials science and technology by a (mostly sophisticated) combination of physical and chemical analytical techniques. Book excerpt: Advances in Materials surveys the developments in materials science and technology. This book examines the limitations imposed by materials on the development of technology. Organized into 34 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the techniques in solving the technical challenge in the field of materials. This text then defines the difficult environments considered in this investigation, which include mechanical stress, erosion, chemical attack, and thermal shock at temperatures above about 1200°C. Other chapters consider the successful development of nuclear thermionic converters, which centers heavily on the development of materials capable of enduring rather difficult working conditions for longer periods of time. This book discusses as well the techniques, such as the planar and epitaxy technique, employed in the production of devices. The final chapter deals with the rate of development in the equipment used in the fabrication of plastics. This book is a valuable resource for polymer scientists, materials scientists, engineers, and metallurgists.

Book excerpt: Advances in Materials is a record of the proceedings of the symposium on Advances in Materials, held in Manchester College of Science and Technology, Manchester, England in April 1964. The papers collected survey the developments in materials science and technology. The limitations imposed by materials on the progress of modern technology and developments to meet the increasingly exacting requirements of industry are examined. The topics discussed include the challenges to materials science in the chemical industry; progress in materials, designs, and fabrication techniques in the power generation industry; the nature of glass; and effects of temperature and environment on the mechanical behavior of metals. Materials scientists and engineers will find the book a god source of information.
