Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A greater knowledge of the basic molecular mechanisms which regulate platelet function, coagulation, the fibrinolytic system and their interaction with the vessel wall has allowed a better understanding of the numerous aspects involved in the pathogenesis of thrombosis and the regulation of hemostasis. Thrombosis represents today one of the causes of death in the Western hemisphere. Arterial thrombosis may lead to myocardial infarction, cerebral and peripheral vascular diseases. Venous thrombosis, on the other hand, is a complication of heart disease, surgery, extensive trauma, several obstetric pathologies, and may, at times, develop in apparently healthy subjects. These complex problems are dealt with within the content of "Advances in Hemostasis and Thrombosis." The present papers contain up-to-date information on hemostasis, the role of prostaglandins, fibrinolytic coagulation, rheology, and modern therapeutic approaches along with their clinical application. This book, therefore, offers the reader the opportunity to profit from a rare encounter, an interdisciplinary cooperation, with scientific contributions from numerous countries.

Book excerpt: Now more than ever, thrombotic and thromboembolic disorders as well as related diseases such as malignancies, arteriosclerosis, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and obesity are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality. They have become urgent medical problems with serious economic consequences in industrialized and devel- ing countries alike. At the same time, the impact of molecular biology and genetics on our understanding of thrombosis and hemostasis is rapidly growing stronger as well as our knowledge of regeneration and development of specific tissues, organs, and embryos. Researchers are also constantly learning more about cardiovascular diseases as well as regulatory mechanisms for various intrinsic and extrinsic stimuli in viable tissues. In this volume, our intention has been to present the latest relevant information in molecular biology and genetics as well as the clinical implications of a better understanding of pathophysiology, novel diagnostic methodologies, and therapeutic applications for new methods of prevention in thrombosis/hemostasis and related disorders, including atherosclerosis. The dramatic advances in knowledge of thrombosis/hemostasis and vascular biology since the first publication of Recent Advances in Thrombosis and Fibrinolysis, edited with Japanese colleagues, in 1991, have required extensive revision in order to highlight and review recent progress in the field. The editors also gratefully welcome the seven distinguished non Japanese authors, who, with their valuable contributions on subjects beyond the coverage by Japanese authors, have made this new edition truly international.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the last decades, major progress has been made in quality assurance of hemostatic laboratory assays. This book will be an indispensable part of every hemostasis laboratory, where, given its hands-on nature, it will rarely sit to get dusty on the shelves." —Frits R. Rosendaal, Leiden University Medical Center The hemostasis laboratory has a vital role in the diagnosis and management of patients with familial and acquired hemorrhagic and thrombotic disorders. Its role in the monitoring traditional anticoagulant therapy as well as therapy using new anticoagulants presents new challenges to the laboratory. Quality in Laboratory Hemostasis and Thrombosis not only addresses these important issues, but also covers international guidelines for testing, the development of international standard materials, management of hemostasis testing from the laboratory to the point of care as well as molecular genetic testing. Designed as a guide for all those working in hemostasis laboratories, this book details a quality program that, when put into place, will help to improve standards in testing. All of the authors are internationally recognised for their work in hemostasis and thrombosis. Using their experience, they provide information on standards, equipment and methods that will guide the development of a quality program to support all activities in the hemostasis laboratory.

Book excerpt: Recent progress in molecular biology has led to a rapid expansion of our understanding of the proteins that are essential for hemostasis and thrombosis. The goal of the XXI Annual Scientific Symposium of the American Red Cross was to provide a forum to explore and document the impact of recombinant DNA technology in this field. The speakers described the essential features of the genes responsible for key plasma proteins important in hemostasis, including procoagulant Factors VIII and IX and anticoagulant proteins, Antithrombin III and Protein C. They emphasized the advances in recombinant DNA technology that have led to the cloning of these genes. Careful examination of the gene sequence has then provided a clearer understanding of the structure of the encoded proteins, and has given additional insight into their functional domains and their interactions in hemostasis. At the same time, these advances have made it possible to better characterize hemostatic disorders. A large number of published studies have shown that the mutations affecting biological activity are clustered in areas that define functional domains. They have led to fundamental advances in our understanding of specific diseases and they have made it possible to develop more accurate and sensitive diagnostic tests for the detection of the disease states.
