Book excerpt: Using Space—Today and Tomorrow, Volume 2: Communications Satellite Symposium contains the proceedings of the 28th International Astronautical Congress held in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1977. The papers explore all aspects of communications satellites, including critical institutional and economic issues; operational, experimental, and future systems; and technology and transmission techniques. This volume consists of 11 chapters and begins with a discussion on the history and growth of the INTELSAT system, from INTELSAT I in 1965 to INTELSAT V in 1979. The following chapters focus on the development of communication satellite systems in Europe; the international organization of space communications ""INTERSPUTNIK""; Canada's satellite telecommunications plans for the 1980s; and the use of satellites for disaster communications. The Russian satellite TV broadcasting system ""EKRAN"" is also described. Progress in spacecraft technology, system capability, and user utility provided by the space shuttle is examined, along with design factors affecting the lifetime of communications satellites. The final chapter is devoted to two major digital transmission technologies for satellite multiple access: Single Channel per Carrier (SCPC) and Multichannel per Carrier (MCPC). This book will appeal to satellite communications engineers as well as policymakers concerned with communications satellites and space exploration more generally.

Other parts discuss the hypothalamic control and susceptibility to hypothermia and thermal injury; the capacity of short-term and prolonged exposure to hypoxia; the pathogenesis of pulmonary edema; and the constitution and body functions in different ethnic groups. These topics are followed by reviews on the body adaptive changes under hypogravic state, biochemical changes induced by environmental pollution, and physiological behavior under noise, hyperbaric, and emotional stress. The last part describes the effect of environmental stress on diurnal variations in body functions. This book will prove useful to environmental biologists, physiologists, biochemists, and researchers.

It was organized on behalf of the International Paediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA), and sponsored by the regional societies of paediatric nephrology, i. e. the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN), the European Society ofPaedi atric Nephrology (ESPN), the Japanese Society of Pediatric Nephrology (JSPN) and the Latin American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ALANEPE). The five in ternational meetings preceding the Hannover symposium were held in Guadalajara 1968 (G. Gordillo-Paniagua), Paris 1971 (P. Royer, R. Habib, H. Mathieu), Washing ton 1974 (P.L. Calcagno, C.E. Hollerman), Helsinki 1977 (N. Hallman, O. Koski mies) and Philadelphia 1980 (A.B. Gruskin, M.E. Norman). The scientific programme of the Hannover meeting was a reflection of the many suggestions brought before the Programme Content Committee. It consisted of plenary sessions, symposia, workshops, short communications and posters. The lec turers at the plenary sessions were invited by the President according to the topics selected by the Programme Content Committee. The symposia dealing with special aspects of paediatric nephrology were organized in a combined effort by chairper sons selected as experts in the topic concerned and by the President. This volume contains all the papers from the four plenary sessions and 95% of the symposia presentations.
