But what exactly is the nature of the relationship between justice, the rule of law, and development? And how can such a relationship be harnessed to improve the lives of people around the world, sustainably? Volume 5 of The World Bank Legal Review tackles these crucial questions head on. The 32 chapters by distinguished scholars and practitioners off er myriad ideas on the interrelation between development and the rule of law. They also present a plethora of practical lessons about translating insights into real-life outcomes. Foremost among those lessons is that sustainable development both demands and delivers opportunity, inclusion, and equity. Regulatory innovation can help people secure durable economic opportunities. Access to justice can be a pathway for social inclusion and greater citizen engagement. Legal empowerment can promote greater equity in the distribution and enjoyment of public goods. As the international community reshapes its development agenda, this volume of The World Bank Legal Review reminds us that justice, when woven into sustainable development objectives and processes, can unlock endless opportunities.

Book Synopsis Law and Regulation of Commercial Mining of Minerals in Outer Space by : Ricky Lee
Download or read book Law and Regulation of Commercial Mining of Minerals in Outer Space written by Ricky Lee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph addresses the legal and policy issues relating to the commercial exploitation of natural resources in outer space. It begins by establishing the economic necessity and technical feasibility of space mining today, an estimate of the financial commitments required, followed by a risk analysis of a commercial mining venture in space, identifying the economic and legal risks. This leads to the recognition that the legal risks must be minimised to enable such projects to be financed. This is followed by a discussion of the principles of international space law, particularly dealing with state responsibility and international liability, as well as some of the issues arising from space mining activities. Much detail is devoted to the analysis of the content of the common heritage of mankind doctrine. The monograph then attempts to balance such interests in creating a legal and policy compromise to create a new regulatory regime.

Book Synopsis Test and Design-for-Testability in Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuits by : Jose Luis Huertas Díaz
Download or read book Test and Design-for-Testability in Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuits written by Jose Luis Huertas Díaz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-23 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Test and Design-for-Testability in Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuits deals with test and design for test of analog and mixed-signal integrated circuits. Especially in System-on-Chip (SoC), where different technologies are intertwined (analog, digital, sensors, RF); test is becoming a true bottleneck of present and future IC projects. Linking design and test in these heterogeneous systems will have a tremendous impact in terms of test time, cost and proficiency. Although it is recognized as a key issue for developing complex ICs, there is still a lack of structured references presenting the major topics in this area. The aim of this book is to present basic concepts and new ideas in a manner understandable for both professionals and students. Since this is an active research field, a comprehensive state-of-the-art overview is very valuable, introducing the main problems as well as the ways of solution that seem promising, emphasizing their basis, strengths and weaknesses. In essence, several topics are presented in detail. First of all, techniques for the efficient use of DSP-based test and CAD test tools. Standardization is another topic considered in the book, with focus on the IEEE 1149.4. Also addressed in depth is the connecting design and test by means of using high-level (behavioural) description techniques, specific examples are given. Another issue is related to test techniques for well-defined classes of integrated blocks, like data converters and phase-locked-loops. Besides these specification-driven testing techniques, fault-driven approaches are described as they offer potential solutions which are more similar to digital test methods. Finally, in Design-for-Testability and Built-In-Self-Test, two other concepts that were taken from digital design, are introduced in an analog context and illustrated for the case of integrated filters. In summary, the purpose of this book is to provide a glimpse on recent research results in the area of testing mixed-signal integrated circuits, specifically in the topics mentioned above. Much of the work reported herein has been performed within cooperative European Research Projects, in which the authors of the different chapters have actively collaborated. It is a representative snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in this emergent field.
Book Synopsis The Chemistry of Life’s Origins by : J. Mayo Greenberg
Download or read book The Chemistry of Life’s Origins written by J. Mayo Greenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the second course of the International School of Space Chemistry held in Erice (Sicily) from October 20 - 30 1991 at the "E. Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture". The course was attended by 58 participants from 13 countries. The Chemistry of Life's Origins is well recognized as one of the most critical subjects of modem chemistry. Much progress has been made since the amazingly perceptive contributions by Oparin some 70 years ago when he first outlined a possible series of steps starting from simple molecules to basic building blocks and ultimate assembly into simple organisms capable of replicating, catalysis and evolution to higher organisms. The pioneering experiments of Stanley Miller demonstrated already forty years ago how easy it could have been to form the amino acids which are critical to living organisms. However we have since learned and are still learning a great deal more about the primitive conditions on earth which has led us to a rethinking of where and how the condition for prebiotic chemical processes occurred. We have also learned a great deal more about the molecular basis for life. For instance, the existence of DNA was just discovered forty years ago.
Book Synopsis Space Weather Fundamentals by : George V. Khazanov
Download or read book Space Weather Fundamentals written by George V. Khazanov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space weather is one of the most significant natural hazards to human life and health. Conditions of the sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere can influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems. If conditions in the space environment are adverse, they can cause disruption of satellite operations, communications, navigation, and electric power distribution grids, leading to a variety of socioeconomic losses. This book provides an overview of our current knowledge and theoretical understanding of space weather formation and covers all major topics of this phenomena, from the sun to the Earth’s ionosphere and thermosphere, thus providing a fully updated review of this rapidly advancing field. The book brings together an outstanding team of internationally recognised contributors to cover topics such as solar wind, the earth's magnetic field, radiation belts, the aurora, spacecraft charging, orbital drag and GPS.

Book excerpt: "Part I describes and analyses the ESDP, including all 22 military and civilian crisis management operations launched up to 31 August 2009 as well as developments under the Lisbon Treaty, and briefly discusses the international law issues raised, offering a unique insight into ESDP practice and its legal aspects. Part II examines this practice in the framework of the status and obligations of international organizations under international law: it looks at the legal status and personality of international organizations and of the EU as well as at how international organizations, including the EU, are bound by international obligations. Part III extensively addresses the international law applicable to the conduct of ESDP operations, in particular the law of armed conflict and international human rights law, filling a gap in the literature."--Jacket back cover.
