After decades of high-speed growth, the authorities are now focusing on high-quality growth. Whether and how this shift is carried through will determine China’s development path for decades to come. Recent strong growth momentum and significant financial de-risking progress reduce the probability of a near-term abrupt adjustment. Rebalancing accelerated in some dimensions, especially as the current account surplus continued to fall and growth became less dependent on credit, but progress slowed in many other dimensions as exports drove the growth pick up, rather than consumption. And while credit growth has slowed, it remains excessive.

Book excerpt: This paper presents an assessment of the level of observance of the Basel Core Principles for Effective Banking Supervision (BCPs) in China. The China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC) has maintained its momentum in regulation and supervision in the face of exceptional growth in scale and increasing complexity of the banking system. The CBRC has also achieved a high degree of compliance with the BCPs. However, several dimensions of credit risk, including treatment of problem assets, concentration risk and related party exposures have aspects in which they lag international best practices and standards. Failure to resolve these issues may hamper the CBRC in its task of assessing the nature and scale of credit risk in the system and within individual institutions.

This book was released on 2016-08-12 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2016 Article IV Consultation highlights China’s continued transition to sustainable growth, with progress on many fronts. Growth slowed to 6.9 percent in 2015 and is projected to moderate to 6.6 percent in 2016 owing to slower private investment and weak external demand. The economy is advancing on many dimensions of rebalancing, particularly switching from industry to services and from investment to consumption. But other aspects are lagging, such as strengthening state-owned enterprises and financial governance and containing rapid credit growth. The current account surplus is projected to decline to 2.5 percent of GDP in 2016 as imports increase and the services deficit widens with continued outbound tourism.
Book Synopsis Overseas Chinese in the People's Republic of China by : Glen Peterson
Download or read book Overseas Chinese in the People's Republic of China written by Glen Peterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overseas Chinese in the People’s Republic of China examines the experiences of a group of persons known officially and collectively in the PRC as "domestic Overseas Chinese". They include family members of overseas migrants who remained in China, refugees fleeing persecution, and former migrants and their descendants who "returned" to the People’s Republic in order to pursue higher education and to serve their motherland. In this book, Glen Peterson describes the nature of the official state project by which domestic Overseas Chinese were incorporated into the economic, political and social structures of the People’s Republic of China in the 1950s, examines the multiple and contradictory meanings associated with being "domestic Overseas Chinese", and explores how "domestic Overseas Chineseness" as political category shaped social experiences and identities. This book fills an important gap in the literature on Chinese migration and Chinese transnationalism and will be an invaluable resource to students and scholars of these subjects, as well as Chinese history and Asian Studies more generally.
