Along with beautiful illustrations and fascinating stories, this book encourages children to think about the motivations of twenty historical figures. Activities and discussion questions help students recognize the effect these individuals have had on history. The profiles include: Marco Polo Johannes Gutenberg William Bradford Squanto Galileo Christopher Columbus John Smith Leonardo da Vinci Pochahontas William Shakespeare Michelangelo James Cook George Frideric Handel Benjamin Franklin Meriwether Lewis William Clark Thomas Jefferson Sacagawea Mozart Zebulon Pike Francois Millet Jesse Applegate Did you know... Benjamin Franklin had such an impact that nearly 20,000 people attended his funeral? Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press to make the written word available to all, not just the wealthy? Pocahontas bravely risked her life on more than one occasion to save others? Francois Millet was one of the first to paint common people with honor and dignity? Jesse Applegate blazed a safer trail out west so that others would never have to experience his pain? Profiles include a variety of fun activities such as crossword puzzles, word scrambles and sequencing. Timeline figures add depth and perspective. Make learning personal and memorable with Profiles from History."

Book Synopsis Progress in Scale Modeling by : Kozo Saito
Download or read book Progress in Scale Modeling written by Kozo Saito and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-08-20 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scale modeling can play an important role in R&D. When engineers receive some ideas in new product development, they can test how the new design looks by bui- ing scale models and they can get an actual feeling with the prototype through their imagination. Professor Emori often said: “When children play with a toy airplane, their mind is wondering about the prototype airplane which they haven’t ridden. ” Children can use the scale model airplane as a means to enter into an imagi- tive world of wonder by testing in their own way how the actual airplane might function, how the actual airplane can maneuver aerodynamically, what might be the actual sound of a jet engine, how to safely land the actual airplane, and so on. This imagination that scale models can provide for children will help them later develop professional intuition. Physical scale models can never be entirely succe- fully replaced by computer screens where virtual models are displayed and fancy functions are demonstrated. Not only children but also adults can learn things by actually touching things only offered by physical models, helping all of us develop imagination and feeling eventually leading toward Kufu. Einstein’s famous “thought experiments [11],” which helped him to restructure modern physics may possibly and effectively be taught by letting researchers play with scale models!? References 1. I. Readers will be introduced to the latest research efforts in this rapidly growing research field through topics covering bioimaging and biological photochemistry, atomic and molecular phenomena in laser fields, laser–plasma interaction, advanced spectroscopy, electron scattering in laser fields, photochemistry on novel materials, solid-state spectroscopy, photoexcitation dynamics of nanostructures and clusters, and light propagation.
Book Synopsis Progress in Materials Analysis by : M. Grasserbauer
Download or read book Progress in Materials Analysis written by M. Grasserbauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 11th Colloquium on Metallurgical Analysis - a joint venture of the Institute of Analytical Chemistry of the Technical University in Vienna, the Austrian Society for Analytical Chemistry and Microchemistry, the German Metals Society (DGM), and the Society of German Iron and Steel Engineers (VDEh) - was attended by 120 scientists from 12 nations. The major topics covered were surface, micro and trace analysis of materials with a heavy emphasis on metals. According to the strategy of the meeting attention was focussed on an interdisciplinary approach to materials science - combining analytical chemistry, solid state physics and tech nology. Therefore progress reports on analytical techniques (like SIMS, SNMS, Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy, AES, XPS) were given as well as pre sentations on the development of materials (like for the fusion reactor). The majority of the discussion papers centered on the treatment of important technical problems in materials science and technology by a (mostly sophis ticated) combination of physical and chemical analytical techniques. The intensive exchange of ideas and results between the scientists oriented towards basic research and the industrial materials technologists was very fruitful and resulted in the establishment of several scientific cooperations. Major trends in materials analysis were also dealt with in a plenary discussion of which a short summary is contained in this volume. In order to facilitate international communication in the field of materials analysis and in view of the important questions treated in the various contri butions this proceedings volume was edited in English.
