Book Synopsis Pulse of Perseverance by : Pierre Johnson

Book excerpt: What drove three young black men, each from America's most urban environments, to achieve their dreams of becoming doctors? The answer is in the Pulse of Perseverance. In 1998, Max Madhere, Pierre Johnson, and Joe Semien were three young, black, premedical students at Xavier University of Louisiana. Each was struggling with the demands of Xavier's rigorous curriculum, yet each was determined to succeed, even if the statistics, or the stereotypes about black men, said otherwise. By drawing on each other's determination and individual strengths, they forged a brotherhood and created a bond so strong that it would carry them through college, medical school, and well beyond. Now they've come together in Pulse to share their stories and encourage young people of color to pursue high-level careers. Max grew up in New York City and Washington D.C., Pierre in Chicago, and Joe in New Orleans. Underperforming schools, instability in the home, the trappings of street life, or simply being "expected" to fail could have derailed their aspirations, yet all three men refused to accept failure as an option. No obstacle was too great, no ambition too high.Today, Dr. Maxime Madhere, Dr. Pierre Johnson, and Dr. Joseph W. Semien Jr. are each board-certified physicians, as well as fathers and community mentors. Their message in Pulse is both simple and complex: no matter where you're from, no matter what "society" tells you, you can realize your dreams with hard work, determination, and God's guidance.

Book Synopsis Profile of an Iconoclast by : Abne M. Eisenberg
Download or read book Profile of an Iconoclast written by Abne M. Eisenberg and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By opening this book, you will become privy to the thoughts I have accumulated over the past ninety years. They range from banal to bizarre, abstract to concrete, serious to frivolous. The credo that has given my life the most meaning comes from a maxim penned by Socrates: The unexamined life is not worth living. I have spent many days and countless nights devouring the pearls of wisdom generated by great minds that are no longer with us. They will, however, live on as long as they are remembered. Once they are forgotten, their labors will rejoin them in death. As a student, I once challenged a professor suggesting that a remark he made conflicted with a statement on page 17 in our textbook. He parried by saying, Tear that page out. Hence, if you encounter something in this book with which you disagree, you have my permission to tear that page out. Until we meet again, regard these words as my pre-mortem eulogy.

Book Synopsis Motivational Profiles in TIMSS Mathematics by : Michalis P. Michaelides
Download or read book Motivational Profiles in TIMSS Mathematics written by Michalis P. Michaelides and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-03 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book presents a person-centered exploration of student profiles, using variables related to motivation to do school mathematics derived from the IEA’s Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) data. Statistical cluster analysis is used to identify groups of students with similar motivational profiles, across grades and over time, for multiple participating countries. While motivational variables systematically relate to school outcomes, linear relationships can obscure the diverse makeup of student subgroups, each with varying combinations of motivation, emotions, and attitudes. In this book, a person-centered analysis of distinct and meaningful motivational profiles and their differences on sociodemographic variables and mathematics performance broadens understanding about the role that motivation characteristics play in learning and achievement in mathematics. Exploiting the richness of IEA’s TIMSS data from many countries, extracted clusters reveal consistent, as well as certain nuanced patterns that are systematically linked to sociodemographic and achievement measures. Student clusters with inconsistent motivational profiles were found in all countries; mathematics self-confidence then emerged as the variable more closely associated with average achievement. The findings demonstrate that teachers, researchers, and policymakers need to take into account differential student profiles, prioritizing techniques that target skill and competence in mathematics, in educational efforts to develop student motivation.

Book excerpt: Many people set out to achieve a dream-starting a business or learning to play the piano or publishing a book-but they don't succeed, and the dream fizzles away. In many cases, these people have lots of skills and expertise, such as deep knowledge of the business or career they are interested in, so why don't they succeed? Paul Levesque and Art McNeil have discovered that making a dream come true requires cultivating skills of a higher order-macroskills-that inevitably spell the difference between success and failure no matter what the specifics of a person's dreams are. These are the skills Dreamcrafting outlines in detail.
