Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central part of New York State, the homeland of the Oneida Haudenosaunee people, helped shape American history. This book tells the story of the land and the people who made their homes there from its earliest habitation to the present day. It examines this region's impact on the making of America, from its strategic importance in the Revolution and Early Republic to its symbolic significance now to a nation grappling with challenges rooted deep in its history. The book shows that in central New York—perhaps more than in any other region in the United States—the past has never remained neatly in the past. Land of the Oneidas is the first book in eighty years that tells the history of this region as it changed from century to century and into our own time.

Book Synopsis Social Exclusion and the Criminal Justice System by : Elisa García-España
Download or read book Social Exclusion and the Criminal Justice System written by Elisa García-España and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the results of the latest in a long-running research project using the RIMES instrument, developed by scholars in Spain. Here, RIMES is used to measure the extent of social exclusion resulting from the penal system in comparative perspective. The volume shows the results of the application of the instrument in seven criminal justice systems: Germany, Italy, Spain, Poland, England and Wales, California, and New York. Divided into two parts, the first provides a general overview of the RIMES instrument, including a discussion of the theoretical model and the methodology. The second part focuses on the results of the application of RIMES in the seven jurisdictions. The comparative results are organised according to the nine dimensions included in the RIMES instrument: control of public spaces; legal safeguards; sentencing and sanctions systems; harshest penalties; prison rules; preventive intervention; legal and social status of offenders and ex-offenders; police and criminal records; and youth criminal justice. The last chapter summarizes the comparative results and ranks them in terms of the findings on social exclusion. The book will be of interest to academics, researchers and policy-makers working in the areas of Comparative Criminal Justice, Criminology, Criminal Law and Policy.

Book Synopsis Atlantic Metropolis by : Aaron Gurwitz
Download or read book Atlantic Metropolis written by Aaron Gurwitz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 737 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book applies the contents of a working economist’s tool-kit to explain, clearly and intuitively, when and why over the course of four centuries individuals, families, and enterprises decided to locate in or around the lower Hudson River Valley. Collectively those millions of decisions have made New York one of the twenty-first century’s few truly global cities. A recurrent analytic theme of this work is that the ups and downs of New York’s trajectory are best understood in the context of what was happening elsewhere in the broader Atlantic world. Readers will find that the Atlantic perspective viewed through an economic lens goes a long way toward clarifying otherwise quite perplexing historical events and trends.

Book Synopsis Growing Gardens, Building Power by : Justin Sean Myers
Download or read book Growing Gardens, Building Power written by Justin Sean Myers and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-14 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the United States marginalized communities are organizing to address social, economic, and environmental inequities through building community food systems rooted in the principles of social justice. But how exactly are communities doing this work, why are residents tackling these issues through food, what are their successes, and what barriers are they encountering? This book dives into the heart of the food justice movement through an exploration of East New York Farms! (ENYF!), one of the oldest food justice organizations in Brooklyn, and one that emerged from a bottom-up asset-oriented development model. It details the food inequities the community faces and what produced them, how and why residents mobilized to turn vacant land into community gardens, and the struggles the organization has encountered as they worked to feed residents through urban farms and farmers markets. This book also discusses how through the politics of food justice, ENYF! has challenged the growth-oriented development politics of City Hall, opposed the neoliberalization of food politics, navigated the funding constraints of philanthropy and the welfare state, and opposed the entrance of a Walmart into their community. Through telling this story, Growing Gardens, Building Power offers insights into how the food justice movement is challenging the major structures and institutions that seek to curtail the transformative power of the food justice movement and its efforts to build a more just and sustainable world.

Book Synopsis Principals and Teachers Can’t Do It All by : Charles A. Bonnici
Download or read book Principals and Teachers Can’t Do It All written by Charles A. Bonnici and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, the entire success of a school seems to be the responsibility of the principal and the teachers. The thesis of this book is that principals and teachers can only take a school so far because of other factors that also impact on the success or failure of a school: (1) Federal, state, local and district regulations and policies; (2) the physical plant and location of the school; (3) parents; (4) students; (5) the non-teaching staff. The book explores all these, but also has an underlying theme: Money It is a cliché that if a school has more money, it will have better results. Monies allocated to education do have an impact, but poverty level and income inequality have an equal if not greater impact on school success on the national, state and local levels. Principals and teachers have absolutely no control on poverty and income inequality which negatively impact schools regardless of how dedicated and hard-working the pedagogical staff. After exploring the other factors impacting on school success, the book will look at teachers and principals, not from the viewpoint of what they can do, but the viewpoint of their limitations. Much of this is economic, leading to high staff turnover and therefore a lack of continuity in a school.

Book excerpt: Weaving together research findings and narratives, Culture of Health in Practice: Innovations in Research, Community Engagement, and Action explores the many opportunities we have as a society to advance a Culture of Health and makes the case that a commitment to health equity is fundamental to bringing those efforts into the mainstream. In this latest contribution to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Culture of Health Series, contributors describe the challenges and opportunities in rural and urban regions, in neighborhoods and schools, in prisons and workplaces. They explore different populations, including immigrants, minority youth, and individuals with substance use disorders; the risks posed by climate change; the role of the media in shaping the public discourse; and the innovations being spearheaded by health providers, insurers, and community leaders. Together, the chapters carry the message that while the challenges are daunting, achieving health equity for all lies within reach.
Book Synopsis Immigrant Labor and the New Precariat by : Ruth Milkman
Download or read book Immigrant Labor and the New Precariat written by Ruth Milkman and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration has been a contentious issue for decades, but in the twenty-first century it has moved to center stage, propelled by an immigrant threat narrative that blames foreign-born workers, and especially the undocumented, for the collapsing living standards of American workers. According to that narrative, if immigration were summarily curtailed, border security established, and ""illegal aliens"" removed, the American Dream would be restored. In this book, Ruth Milkman demonstrates that immigration is not the cause of economic precarity and growing inequality, as Trump and other promoters of the immigrant threat narrative claim. Rather, the influx of low-wage immigrants since the 1970s was a consequence of concerted employer efforts to weaken labor unions, along with neoliberal policies fostering outsourcing, deregulation, and skyrocketing inequality. These dynamics have remained largely invisible to the public. The justifiable anger of US-born workers whose jobs have been eliminated or degraded has been tragically misdirected, with even some liberal voices recently advocating immigration restriction. This provocative book argues that progressives should instead challenge right-wing populism, redirecting workers' anger toward employers and political elites, demanding upgraded jobs for foreign-born and US-born workers alike, along with public policies to reduce inequality.
Book Synopsis Human and Ecological Risk Assessment by : Dennis J. Paustenbach

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understand the fundamentals of human risk assessment with this introduction and reference Human risk assessments are a precondition for virtually all industrial action or environmental regulation, all the more essential in a world where chemical and environmental hazards are becoming more abundant. These documents catalog potential environmental, toxicological, ecological, or other harms resulting from a particular hazard, from chemical spills to construction projects to dangerous workplaces. They turn on a number of variables, of which the most significant is the degree of human exposure to the hazardous agent or process. Human and Ecological Risk Assessment combines the virtues of a textbook and reference work to introduce and analyze these vital documents. Beginning with the foundational theory of human health risk assessment, it then supplies case studies and detailed analysis illustrating the practice of producing risk assessment documents. Fully updated and authored by leading authorities in the field, the result is an indispensable work. Readers of the second edition of Human and Ecological Risk Assessment will also find: Over 40 entirely new case studies reflecting the latest in risk assessment practice Detailed discussion of hazards including air emissions, contaminated food and soil, hazardous waste sites, and many more Case studies from multiple countries to reflect diverse international standards Human and Ecological Risk Assessment is ideal for professionals and advanced graduate students in toxicology, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, environmental science, and all related subjects.
