The aim of the current study was to examine whether employers perceive women with disabilities and men with disabilities differently with respect to disability type and on several employment related concerns.Methodology/Technique - Data were obtained from a sample of 201 employers in East Malaysia via a survey questionnaire.Findings - The findings suggest that employers' perceptions were influenced by disability type as well as were gender specific on matters relating to absenteeism, work quality and supervision but not loyalty and business costs. Interestingly, employers were found to express more favorable perceptions towards women with disabilities than men with disabilities. In terms of disability type, men with physical disabilities and women with auditory/communication disability were perceived the most favorably.Novelty - Demonstrate the originality/value of the research which makes it different from prior studies.

The perceptions of restricted opportunities in the workplace were examined for those reporting conditions due to mental vs. physical disabilities using data from the 1994-1995 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS). These restricted opportunities are defined as being denied (1) a promotion, (2) a transfer, or (3) access to training. When both primary and secondary conditions were included in the model, it was found that those with only mental disabilities were almost six times as likely to report restricted opportunities, and those with both mental and physical disabilities were almost eight times as likely to report restricted opportunities in the workplace compared to those who only have physical disabilities. This current study is limited by reliance on self-reported data. Future studies comparing self-report responses to actual personnel records may be useful.

The policy reforms have aimed to change the balance between citizens’ rights and duties and the opportunities to enjoy choice and autonomy, live in the community and participate in political decision-making processes of importance for one’s life. How do the reforms influence the opportunities to exercise Active Citizenship? This volume presents the findings from the first cross-national comparison of how persons with disabilities reflexively make their way through the world, pursuing their own interests and values. The volume considers how their experiences, views and aspirations regarding participation vary across Europe. Based on retrospective life-course interviews, the volume examines the scope for agency on the part of persons with disabilities, i.e. the extent to which men and women with disabilities are able to make choices and pursue lives they have reasons to value. Drawing on structuration theory and the capability approach, the volume investigates the opportunities for exercising Active Citizenship among men and women in nine European countries. The volume identifies the policy implications of a process-oriented and multi-dimensional approach to Active Citizenship in European disability policy. It will appeal to policymakers and policy officials, as well as to researchers and students of disability studies, comparative social policy, international disability law and qualitative research methods.
