Book excerpt: Le TDL (Trouble développemental du langage) fait référence à des difficultés de langage oral en expression et/ou en compréhension. Malgré de nombreuses ressources documentant le TDL dans l'enfance, la sémiologie de ce trouble à l'âge adulte est peu décrite dans la littérature, et n'existe pas chez les adultes francophones. Afin de déterminer le profil cognitif et langagier des adultes francophones porteurs d'un TDL, nous avons recruté 29 participants âgés de plus de 16 ans ayant reçu un diagnostic de trouble développemental du langage au CRTLA de Tours. Nous leur avons administré un protocole d'épreuves évaluant le langage oral, le langage écrit, la cognition non-verbale et les fonctions exécutives afin de comparer leurs performances à celles d'adultes à développement typique. Notre étude rapporte que les marqueurs du TDL dans l'enfance, à savoir un trouble phonologique, un déficit morphosyntaxique ainsi que des difficultés en mémoire à court terme verbale, persistent à l'âge adulte. D'autres déficits persistent, notamment dans les domaines du vocabulaire, de la compréhension orale et de la mémoire de travail. Également, notre étude rapporte que les performances en cognition non-verbale sont inférieures chez les adultes avec TDL que celles des adultes à développement typique malgré un QI non-verbal dans la norme dans l'enfance. Enfin, nous retrouvons un lien entre les perfonnances en langage oral et celles en langage écrit chez les adultes porteurs d'un TDL: notamment, la profondeur du lexique et les compétences morphosyntaxiques sont corrélées à la compréhension de texte. Malgré une variabilité interindividuelle concernant la manifestation des troubles, notre étude a permis de mettre en évidence un profil cognitivo-langagier global concernant les adultes francophones porteurs d'un TDL.

Chapter one has been largely rewritten to give an outline of current approaches to a model of comprehension of spoken language. Chapter two has a new initial section but otherwise remains as it was. Chapter three incorporates a new section on "pause" and how this interacts with rhythm, and rather more on the function of stress. Chapter four has an extended initial section but otherwise remains largely as it was. Chapter five on intonation contains several sections which have been rewritten to varying extents. Chapter six of the first edition has disappeared: in 1977, very little work had been published on "fillers" and it seemed worthwhile incorporating a chapter that sat rather oddly with the phonetic/phonological interests of the rest of the book. Not that there is a great industry of descriptions of the forms and functions of these and similar phenomena there seems no reason to retain this early but admittedly primitive account. The chapter on "paralinguistic vocal features", now chapter six, has some rewriting in the early part but considerable rewriting in the last sections. The final chapter on "teaching listening comprehension" has grown greatly in length. It still incorporates some material from the original chapter but most of it is completely rewritten.
