The military maxim, that no defences are strong without force enough in them to occupy their line, is true of civil affairs. Entrenchment in the letter of a constitution avails little with the people at large on either side of a question, unless the line of that entrenchment is occupied by a living conviction of being in the right. The most ultra-southern position on the negro question has an element of strength close akin to this. To be right is the only real meces sity; but where is the community that will not make and defend with treasure and blood the assumption that what is necessary is. Right? Southerners, in the political sense of the term, may sometimes lack a clear, firm-founded belief that they are right; they may have no more than a restless confidence that others are as wrong as they; but they have at least a profound conviction that they are moved by an imminent, unremitting, imperative necessity. Not that this is all; hundreds of thousands of them, incapacitated by this very conviction from falling into sympathy with the best modern thought, have been taught, and are learn ing and teaching, not only on the hustings, but in school, in col lege, at the fireside, through the daily press, in the social circle and in church, that in their attitude on the negro question they are legally, morally and entirely right. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro Problem From first to last it should be borne in mind that the Negro Problem is a race problem. It is true that the great mass of the Southern negroes vote republican ballots. This, however, is not because they have any definite convictions upon questions of public policy, nor yet, except to a limited extent, because it was the Republican party that conferred upon them freedom and the franchise, and that to-day affects to be their one champion and guardian. Their intellectual condition renders the first idea ludicrous. The second is largely shorn of its claims to consideration by the fact that enough negroes have resided at the North to fully enlighten their race at the South as to how far white Republicans in the former section are disposed to fraternize with the African in all the personal and business relations of life. When to correct information in this respect is added the begrudging Spirit in which a few petty offices are awarded to the Southern negro as his part of the spoil of a presidential election, it is hard to see how the emotions excited in him by the Emancipa tion Proclamation, the post-bellum Amendments to the Fed eral Constitution and the present professions of the Republican party could be otherwise than considerably cooled. The Southern negro votes a republican ballot because it is the race prejudices of the Southern whites, which he heartily reciprocates, and not the race prejudices of the Northern whites, that bear directly upon his daily life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Articles on the Negro Problem This volume is intended to be an interpretation of the leading aspects of the Negro Problem of today, in compact and convenient form, suitable for the student, debater or general reader. A preliminary view of the history and status of the Negro in our civilization is given, with other material of general interest, followed by the more specific phases of our race relationships - the problem itself - with Special consideration to its leading divisions, controversial or otherwise, race prejudice, amalgamation, education, violence including lynching, race riots and peonage, the Negro of the South and the North, Negro suffrage, the Negro in industry, segregation and colonization, and, lastly, the expression of Opinion as to the future or the best way to racial peace. In accordance with the general plan of the Handbook Series, the constant aim in both reprints and bibliography has been for impartiality toward all views, and selections have been chosen from both white and Negro writers, from opposers and sympathizers of the Negro alike, yet with the aim not So much to maintain exact balance as to give ex pression to views that reflect representative opinions and conditions of race friction, and that serve best to indicate the way for constructive effort. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Racial Integrity and Other Features of the Negro Problem This volume is in no sense the result of any recent agitation of the race question. Its inception dates from the year 1900, and the manuscript was practically completed before the Brownsville affair, the Atlanta riots, and other less serious race conflicts aroused the country to at least a temporary realization of the existence of latent racial antagonisms which, under sufficient provocation, may at any time cause serious trouble. Advantage was, however, taken of a final revision of the manuscript to refer briefly to two or three of the more recent outbreaks because of their value as illustrations of facts and conditions under discussion. The purpose of this volume is primarily to bring before thoughtful people the moral and ethical principles involved in the amalgamation of the white and the black races. Busy men will find the gist of the volume in Chapter I. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro Problem: Abraham Lincoln's Solution It was the consideration of this aspect of the problem which induced me to give the subject renewed examination, in order to ascertain whether the present unsatisfactory condition of affairs must continue indefinitely to embarrass our national development, or whether, after all, this old and vexatious question is not susceptible of a solution at once adequate and righteous. Can there be, in the nature of things, a national evil of this momentous character so deeply rooted in our institutions as to be impossible of extirpation? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro: The Southerner's Problem In dealing with this Question in the past, nearly every mistake that could possibly be made has been made, and to-day, after more than thirty-five years of peace and of material prosperity, the Question is apparently as live as it was over a generation ago, when national passion was allowed to usurp the province of deliberation, and the Negro was taught two fundamental errors: first, that the Southern white was inherently his enemy, and, secondly, that his race could be legislated into equality with the white. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro: A Menace to American Civilization To me, there seems to be but little need for a foreword to the present work, inasmuch as nearly all that is usually said along such lines occurs in my Introduction, which here follows next in order. The reader will not have proceeded very far in his or her perusal of the volume ere the fact will be appreciated that, in so far as the work may be considered an historical one, it is squarely up to date in all particulars, even to happenings that occurred but a few weeks prior to the completion of the presswork upon it and the manufacture of the volume. This is due to the truly marvelous rapidity, associated with expertness and accuracy of the highest order, evinced by my publishers, the F. A. Davis Company, in passing the work through their reading-rooms and press. It is with pleasure that I extend to them my thanks for all this, and for their uniform courtesy throughout while the book was in course of manufacture. Moreover, I am deeply indebted to many friends who have, from time to time, encouraged me to undertake and complete this task, while to others my acknowledgments are doubly due, for they have not only brought inspiration to my researches, but directly furnished contributions to various chapters in the volume. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Negro Labor: Question The question of the condition and capability of the African Negro is at length beginning to assume a very different practical shape from any that it has ever yet had in the eyes of the world - in the eyes, indeed, of the Christian Church also, since opportunities are likely to be opened for conveying to those benighted mil lions of our fellow-creatures the light of the Gospel of Truth, such as have never, at any form er period, been Within the power of Christendom. A necessity has arisen for the employment of negroes in various kinds of human labor for Which they, above all others, are peculiarly adapted: nay, not only so, but, it would appear as the only people Who are really fitted by na. Ture - that is, by their constitution, their organ ization, and other natural circumstances of their condition - to carry on such labor healthfully and properly. Not on this continent only. North and South, 1 shall submit the same to the candid judgment of all who hear me in full confidence that it will be received as true, by honest men and women of both sections of this Republic. There is one thing, however, in which I think we must all agree at the start. It is that this so - called but mis called Negro problem is one of the most important and urgent subjects that can now engage public attention. Its solution is, and ought to be, the serious business of the best American wisdom and statesmanship. For it involves the honour or dishonour, the glory or shame, the happiness or misery, of the whole American people. It not only touches the good name and fame of the Republic, but its highest moral welfare and its permanent safety. The evil with which it confronts us is coupled with a peril at once great and increasing, and one which should be removed, if it can be, without delay.
