Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: In a virtual organisation, connected by information technology, independent firms join their complementary core competencies to achieve a common goal. If those firms incorporate into a legal entity the virtual organisation, which is a temporary concept, transforms into a permanent virtual corporation. Advantages, potential drawbacks and organisational requirements of the virtual corporation are illustrated in the first part of this study. However, the virtual corporation is not just another chapter in the book of organisational theory, but a strategic tool for companies to succeed in a particular market. The industry which this study examines is the information, communication and entertainment sector. The sector is converging and industry structures change accordingly. Therefore companies operating in it need to cope with the effects of a rapidly changing market environment. As the virtual corporation promises to make firms more flexible, it may hence provide a viable solution for those firms. To asses if this assumption is true, this study proposes that a firm must look at its industry environment, its strategic objectives and its organisational capabilities. Only if there is a corresponding fit between those three factors, a firm is suited to become part of a virtual partnership. A number interviews attempt to validate the above framework. The result: even though a final prove would have to be delivered through a more extensive survey or questionnaires, the outcome of the interviews in principle corresponds to the theoretical findings. These findings were, that the virtual corporation will be a useful tool for a firm, which operates in a market with a moderate level of risk and stable industry standards. The firm adapts to the market and wants to seize business opportunities by placing selective bets to defend or extend its current competitive position. Moreover, the company has the general organisational capabilities needed for a virtual working environment and a specific core competence that adds value to the joint venture. As these requirements, especially the moderate level of market risk, do not necessarily apply to the majority of firms from the information, communication and entertainment sector, one must conclude that the virtual corporation will not be a panacea. Within the management sciences there has been a growing tendency to view organisations as complex systems, that is, to describe them as organisms. Increasingly the hard sciences are being used to describe and analyse organisations. In the field of creative problem solving several systems authors have advocated the use of metaphors to describe certain aspects of organisations. In reviewing much of today s management literature we are exhorted to use benchmarks, for a variety of management tasks. In reviewing organisational excellence we are duty bound to find a measure that will be relevant tomorrow as well as today. Conjoining these current themes in management, this thesis seeks to review what we know about the effective collective functioning of selected species and to compare these natural systems with organisational systems. We posit the question: Can an understanding of the functioning of natural systems help us to understand how organisations function? If so, what can we learn about the effective functioning of organisations. Firstly we will review common management theories, with a focus on organisational learning and knowledge management. Secondly we will look at three natural organisations: Honey bees, leaf-cutter ants and the African locust. We want to find out how these organisations function, and specifically search for knowledge management and organisational learning within these biological systems. Then we will try to link management theories with our findings in natural organisations. This approach will finally deliver some interesting hypothesis about knowledge management and organisational learning - both valid for human and natural organisations. The quality with which they are delivered to the customer and the effectiveness of their provision determine the economic success of an enterprise to a large extent. Therefore, the dissertation centers around service quality and organizational effectiveness. Introducing, the characteristics of services in general - intangibility, inseparability, heterogeneity, and perishability - and the rote of projects in IT services are explained. Then, organizational effectiveness is defined as internal efficiency plus adaptability to external demands. Two models are compared showing that organizational effectiveness consists of several factors - e.g. motivation, management leadership, or structure - which indeed can be measured via a particular diagnosis questionnaire. Analogously, two service quality models are put forth. They reveal that total quality is comprised of the technical quality of the service outcome (objective quality) and the functional quality of the process (subjective quality). Likewise, service quality can be evaluated by regarding ten determinants and graphically displaying them in an importance-performance grid. Relating to both points above, aspects in marketing (internal, interactive) and operations (service as a basic function and as one objective) are considered. The so-gained theoretical insights are practically applied in an investigation of an IT service department for which specific recommendations are deduced. Generally, results suggest that service quality and organizational effectiveness are somehow related and commonly influenced by organizational structure, customer orientation, as well as management, leadership, and motivation. The discussion of these points finally leads to the conclusions that (1) a matrix structure in IT services is more apt than any other one, (2) a people-oriented management style is of crucial importance for motivating people and reaching performance, and (3) orientation towards the customer and marketing the buyer-seller interactions decisively influences the perception of service quality.
