Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Sixth Annual Catalogue of the State Normal School at Mankato, Minnesota, for the School Year 1904-1905: Nd Announcements for 1905-1906 The chief purpose of the school is special instruction in the Science and Art of Teaching; but, as in nearly all other normal schools in the country, a thorough system of academic instruction is at once the basis, and, to a large extent, the medium of professional instruction in the courses not designed for high school graduates. General culture and accu rate scholarship are necessary to good teaching; but with this culture and scholarship the teacher must be trained in the principles that underlie his art and in the application of these principles to the practical work of the school. The school comprises two departments the Normal School proper and the Elementary School and Training Department. The Elementary School includes a kindergarten, the usual eight grades below the high school, and a Review Class in which candidates who fail in their entrance examinations will be given an opportunity to make up the subjects in which they may be deficient, and students who wish to do so may review carefully the common branches before entering upon the work of the normal school. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixty-Ninth Annual Report of the Board of Education: Together With the Sixty-Ninth Annual Report of the Secretary of the Board, 1904-1905; January, 1906 In the death of Dr. George H. Conley, which took place at his home in Brookline, on Dec. 20, 1905, the Board has' been called upon to mourn a second time within the year the loss of one of its most experienced members. Dr. Conley was appointed a member of the Board by Gov. Wil liam E. Russell in 1893, to succeed the Rev. A. A. Miner. His scholarship, his experience and his personal qualities had made him prominent in educational circles, and amply justified his selection. All of these gifts, personal and professional, he placed at the service of the State, and for nearly thirteen years bore his part in the administrative work of the Board. During the whole period of his service he was a member of the Board of Visitors of the State Normal School at Framingham and of the State Normal Art School in Boston. It was due to his efforts that working relations were established between the art school and the public schools of Boston, by which the students of the school were given Opportunity to observe and practice in the public schools, and a way Opened for the graduates to become regular teachers. On the establishment of the school at Lowell he was made chairman of the Board of Visitors. This position was especially congenial to him, because Lowell had been his early home and the scene of his earliest professional success, and he gave to the new school his fullest sympathy and support. In the annual report of the Board, written by him in 1900, he dealt in a broad and wise way with the normal schools, the elective system in high schools, the relation of the high schools to the col leges, manual training. In the high schools, and the personal rela tion of the teacher to the pupil. This report attracted wide atten tion, from the importance of the subjects treated and the general soundness of. The views expressed. He was judicious, tactful and impartial in dealing with many delicate problems which it became his duty to solve. In his death the State has lost a gifted citizen and a valued public servant, and the Board a useful and companionable member. Growth is a human need. Humanity dies when growth ceases. The miserable carcasses may keep on moving and even draw salaries, after the flame is burned out, but - good Lord, deliver the laddies and lassies of them! The beginning of the end of one's growth is self-satisfaction. It is the worst thing that can befall an otherwise moral man. In the teacher it is a sin, for it dulls his work. And dull teaching is a fraud upon humanity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of Cincinnati Record; March 1, 1906, Vol. 2: A College of Commerce for Cincinnati When we advocate Commercial Schools for our young man hood, it is because we wish them to do better than their fathers, better than their neighbors, better than other nations which are running us hard in the race for wealth, which are competing with us on our own ground, or in our own Colonies, and driving us slowly but steadily out of our privileged hunting grounds. It is because we don't want the clerk necessarily to remain a clerk, and because we want the sons of our merchants and mahatao taters to enter their father's business with a wider vision, with a more complete mental outfit, and with greater power andfacility of close reckoning, so that they may not only be able to continue their father's business but to improveand extend it, to make it more fruitful, to take advantage of the latest improve ments and inventions of international communications, and so prevent the business from passing over to our rivals in other countries as a consequence of the superior knowledge which they bring to bear upon that particular branch of trade or commerce.
