This enables one to consider the relationship between downstream firms' strategies for product differentiation and vertical integration. I show that vertical integration enhances the degree of product differentiation of the integrated firm. Under some conditions, partial integration arises in equilibrium, which may increase the profit of the nonintegrated downstream firm. The paper also discusses the welfare implications of vertical integration.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject Business economics - Industrial Management, grade: Sehr Gut, University of Vienna (Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaften), course: Industrial Management, language: English, abstract: In explaining the reasons for the large number of mergers among multinational companies as well as small specialized businesses in recent years, the realization of potential synergies among the merging firms has often been pointed out. Synergy is a ‘Holy Grail’ of business strategy; many seek it but few actually succeed and most attempts at developing synergies meet at a non desirable fate. A global survey of A.T. Kearney (1998) concluded that after three years of a transaction the profitability of the integrated firm decreases by 10 % on average and 50 % of alliances in the USA fail within four years. Nevertheless, it is particularly claimed that a vertical integration will enable the supplier to adapt his technology in a much higher degree to the needs of his customer than when he is separately owned . A world-wide study of Arthur Andersen elaborated on the factors which firms look upon when striving for merging with another company.
Book Synopsis The Economic Theory of Product Differentiation by : John Beath
Download or read book The Economic Theory of Product Differentiation written by John Beath and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-02-22 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few industries in modern market economies that do not manufacture differentiated products. This book provides a systematic explanation and analysis of the widespread prevalence of this important category of products. The authors concentrate on models in which product selection is endogenous. In the first four chapters they consider models that try to predict the level of product differentiation that would emerge in situations of market equilibrium. These market equilibria with differentiated products are characterised and then compared with social welfare optima. Particular attention is paid to the distinction between horizontal and vertical differentiation as well as to the related issues of product quality and durability. This book brings together the most important theoretical contributions to these topics in a succinct and coherent manner. One of its major strengths is the way in which it carefully sets out the basic intuition behind the formal results. It will be useful to advanced undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in industrial economics and microeconomic theory.
Book Synopsis Strategic Aspects of Oligopolistic Vertical Integration by : C. Wu
Download or read book Strategic Aspects of Oligopolistic Vertical Integration written by C. Wu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this text some fundamental issues concerning the strategic impact of vertical structures of firms are discussed in a successive oligopoly model. Vertical integration strategy has been identified as one of the key strategies which determine the success or failure of enterprises. Many studies on vertical integration are based on business experiences and interviews with managers. However, the extensive application of game theory in business economics allows this study on vertical integration to be based on sound theoretic ground. Moreover, the significance of public enterprises in some Western European economies and the trends of economic transition in Eastern Europe justify the efforts to analyse vertical integration issues in the mixed market, which is created by the participation of a public firm into an industry otherwise characterised as a successive oligopoly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Competing firms strategically interact when they make decisions about entry/exit, a product type, or technology adoption. This dissertation explores the determinants of firms' strategies and the effect on the resulting market structure. The first chapter analyzes product differentiation and market structure in the Texas lodging industry. I model the lodging properties' entry, exit and quality decisions as a dynamic oligopoly game and apply the estimation strategy similar to the Nested Pseudo Likelihood (NPL) Algorithm. Using annual data for hotels and motels in Texas in the 1990's, I find that there is a strong incentive for the lodging properties to differentiate themselves by choosing different quality-levels from competitors. Also, I show that high transition costs relative to the exit value deter low quality-level properties from changing their quality-level and induce more to exit. The second chapter investigates the relationship between risk and vertical integration. I modify an ordered Probit model to examine how economic factors, particularly risks, affect the choice of organizational form. I estimate the model using cross-sectional data on the company-owned, franchised and independent properties in the Texas lodging industry. The estimation result shows that overall market risk strengthens the independent properties and weakens the other two forms (franchised and company-owned properties). It also indicates that the form-specific risk is significantly associated with the choice of the organizational form. The third chapter estimates the size of hospital markets, which plays a key role in the antitrust enforcement of hospital mergers. I determine the relevant market size by finding the distance between hospitals at which the choices of technology adoption do not interact, using data on the adoption of SPECT diagnostic imaging technologies. I show that the Elzinga/Hogarty approach taken in the antitrust cases overestimates the relevant market size of hospitals.
Book Synopsis How Do Market Structures Affect Decisions on Vertical Integration/separation by : Noriaki Matsushima
Download or read book How Do Market Structures Affect Decisions on Vertical Integration/separation written by Noriaki Matsushima and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We provide a simple model to investigate decisions on vertical integration/separation. The key feature of this model is that more than one input is required for the final products of the local downstream monopolists. Depending on their cost structure, downstream firms' decisions on vertical separation can be both strategic complements and strategic substitutes. As a result, the equilibrium number of vertically integrated firms depends on the cost structure. When the local downstream monopolists merge, vertical separation tends to appear in equilibrium. When an upstream firm can price discriminate, the downstream firms vertically separate. When the downstream firms compete with each other, vertical integration tends to appear if the degree of product differentiation is lower. -- vertical integration ; vertical separation ; local monopolists ; inputs ; technology

Book Synopsis Strategic Flexibility by : Kathryn Rudie Harrigan
Download or read book Strategic Flexibility written by Kathryn Rudie Harrigan and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1985 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many companies refuse to face the reality that their businesses are in trouble or that their strategic positions are wrong. Whether a product line is no longer profitable, foreign competition has slowed growth, or technological changes have left them behind, many otherwise well-managed companies hang on for too long to the status quo. In this inflexible posture, managements time and talent go to waste, assets grow sterile, and technology falls behind. This book will help managers overcome the exit barriers that hamper strategic flexibility. Based on innovative studies of 192 firms within Sixteen industries, the ideas presented here are applicable to almost any industry and any type of firm. Harrigan discusses the major strategic decisions facing executives today, including guerrilla strategies of underdog competitors, entry and exit barriers, the use of joint ventures to cope with the uncertainties created by erratic growth, and the management of change. She focuses on the shortcomings of vertical integration, developing a framework for better make-or-buy decisions. The effects of exit barriers on firms' strategic flexibility are detailed, and managerial tools to cope with high barriers and declining businesses are introduced. "Strategic Flexibility" is organized to provide easy reference for managers seeking to find out what strategies have worked and why. This book offers practical, proven ways for managers to expand the flexibility and responsiveness of their companies to new competitive conditions.
Book Synopsis On Vertical Mergers and Their Competitive Effects by : Yongmin Chen
Download or read book On Vertical Mergers and Their Competitive Effects written by Yongmin Chen and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is well known that vertical integration can change the pricing incentive of an upstream producer. However, it has not been noticed that vertical integration may also change the pricing incentive of a downstream producer and the incentive of a competitor in choosing input suppliers. I develop an equilibrium theory of vertical merger that incorporates these additional strategic considerations. Under fairly general conditions, a vertical merger will result in both efficiency gains and a collusive effect. The competitive effects of a vertical merger depend on the cost of switching suppliers and the degree of downstream product differentiation.
