Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Institutional investors spend the majority of their time in search of the Holy Grail of investment alpha, or risk-adjusted market outperformance. The problem is far too many organizations and funds fail to first understand whether or not they have what it takes to earn alpha or whether it even makes sense to try. Organizational alpha, on the other hand, is something every institutional investor and nonprofit can achieve, assuming they focus on what they can control and what matters. This book will show institutional investors, board members, trustees, consultants and beneficiaries how the concept of organizational alpha can help them: Recognize the importance of goals-based investing. Think in terms of process over outcomes. Understand the fiduciary duty and what constitutes a breach of that duty. Know the difference between a governing and managing fiduciary. Define their overarching investment philosophy. Make sense of the group dynamic at play when making decisions-by-committee. Ensure more continuity in their investment program. Improve their due diligence and decision-making processes. Choose the right consultant or advisor to help oversee their assets. Find additional sources of alpha. Understand the alternative investment landscape. Appreciate the differences between foundations, endowments and pensions. Document their investment process to cut down on unnecessary mistakes. Make decisions that revolve around the goals and mission of the organization. Set realistic expectations with the understanding that the future is always uncertain. Written by an institutional investor who has spent his entire career working with a wide range of institutional investors from endowments to foundations to pension plans to family offices and other nonprofits, Organizational Alpha is a manual that provides institutional investors with the tools they need to find success in the markets and as organizations.

This book was released on 2013-06-01 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the following study, I am going to present a short survey of the hedge fund industry, its regulation and the existent hedge fund strategies. Statistical arbitrage in particular is explained in further detail, and major performance measurement ratios are presented. In the second part, I am going to introduce a semi-variance model for statistical arbitrage. The model is compared to the standard Garch model, which is often used in daily option trading, derivate pricing and risk management. As investment returns are not equally distributed over time, sources for statistical arbitrage occur. The semi-variance model takes skewness into account and provides higher returns at lower volatility than the Garch model. The concept is aimed to be a synopsis of mean reversion and chart pattern detection. The computer model is generated with respect to Brownian motion and technical analysis and provides significant returns to the investment. While the market efficiency hypothesis states the impossibility of long-term arbitrage opportunities, market anomalies outstand significantly. Connecting both elements creates a profitable trading system. The combination of both approaches delivers a sensible hedge fund concept. The out-of-sample backtest verifies out-performance and implies the need for further research in the area of higher moment CAPM and additional market timing strategies as sources of statistical arbitrage.

Book excerpt: Hedge funds are perhaps the hottest topic in finance today, but little material of substance to date has been written on the topic. Most books focus on how to set up a hedge fund and the basic strategies, while few to none focus on what matters most: generating and understanding investment performance. This book takes an exclusive look at the latter, including an analysis of the areas that are most likely to generate strong investment returns — namely, the emerging markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China. The book will be invaluable to not only financial professionals, but anyone interested in learning about hedge funds and their future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alpha liquid scintillation was developed to obtain accurate analytical determinations of alpha-emitting nuclides where no other methods were sufficiently accurate. With the present emphasis on clean-up of radiation contamination, alpha liquid scintillation has become an important tool in the determination of low concentrations of alpha-emitting nuclides. This book is the first to address the subject of alpha liquid scintillation in its entirety. It also examines how alpha spectrometry by liquid scintillation can be done without interference from beta/gamma radiation. Scientists interested in the analysis of alpha-emitting nuclides for environmental monitoring, remediation clean-up, accountability, and research will find this to be a valuable book.

This book was released on 2007-03-12 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is centered on the most pressing unsolved problem in elementary particle physics — the mass generation of particles. It contains physics that is not included in the Standard Model as it is now formulated, while at the same time being in conformity with the major results of the Standard Model, i.e. isotopic spins and interactions. It differs from the Standard Model in the treatment of masses and pseudoscalar mesons, and in the role assigned to the coupling constant α. Presented in a careful and phenomenological way, the material can easily be followed by all physicists, both experimental and theoretical, and also by interested workers in other fields. The author's website — 70mev.org — gives additional information about the applications of the constant α in particle physics.

But the market-beating strategies that will work today are not the same as those that worked in the past. Central bank intervention and the accelerated pace of technology have caused an increase in the disruption of traditional business models across many industries. These industry paradigm shifts combined with macro-driven financial markets have created one of the toughest environments for active investment managers in history. Active Investing in the Age of Disruption details the disruptive forces in the market today and how to navigate them to outperform. This book discusses winning equity investment strategies with lofty goals of alpha creation. Understanding the limits and potential of each unique investment methodology and portfolio strategy will allow you to generate higher returns. Even when your luck runs out or the market works against you, the ideas and disciplined approach in this book will keep you one step ahead of the market. · Understand the disruptive forces affecting the market today · Discover equity investment strategies uniquely targeting alpha generation—beating the market · Understand which features of active investing need to be implemented and stressed from a risk perspective to outperform the market · Learn which previously solid investment tenets may no longer hold true in the age of market disruption · Hone the craft of active investing—identify markets with the greatest profit potential, hedge against strategy limitations, and more It has been a very tough decade for active investment managers, but this book will inspire you to think differently about risks and opportunity. A deeper understanding of the forces affecting the market and a commitment to refining your investment process using the techniques in this book will help you step across the margin of error between under and outperforming.
