Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much may be gathered, indirectly, from the arguments in these pages, as to the real nature of the Earth on which we live and of the heavenly bodies which were created for us. The reader is requested to be patient in this matter and not expect a whole flood of light to burst in upon him at once, through the dense clouds of opposition and prejudice which hang all around. Old ideas have to be gotten rid of, by some people, before they can entertain the new; and this will especially be the case in the matter of the Sun, about which we are taught, by Mr. Proctor, as follows: “The globe of the Sun is so much larger than that of the Earth that no less than 1,250,000 globes as large as the Earth would be wanted to make up together a globe as large as the Sun.” Whereas, we know that, as it is demonstrated that the Sun moves round over the Earth, its size is proportionately less. We can then easily understand that Day and Night, and the Seasons are brought about by his daily circuits round in a course concentric with the North, diminishing in their extent to the end of June, and increasing until the end of December, the equatorial region being the area covered by the Sun’s mean motion. If, then, these pages serve but to arouse the spirit of enquiry, the author will be satisfied.

Book excerpt: A gathering of essays from various scientific journals by the noted British astronomer, Richard A. Proctor (1837-88). Proctor was the author of more than 40 books on the subject and is credited with popularizing astronomy in the 19th century. He was the first to suggest that lunar craters were the result of meteor impacts and not volcanic activity and won recogition for his 1867 map of the surface of Mars showing continents, seas, bays and straits. This book contains essays on subjects including: Sir John Herschel; the planet Mars; Saturn's rings; meteors and shooting stars; the zodiacal light; the solar corona; the sun's journey through space; distribution of the nebulae; a new theory of the Milky Way; the diurnal rotation of Mars; the proper motion of the Sun; the transit of Venus in 1874 and many other subjects. The illustrations include a handsome frontis lithograph of Saturn and its rings and there is also a folding plan of the orbits of Earth and Mars and 5 folding charts showing various stages of the transit of Venus in 1874. There are 3 full-page polar and equatorial maps on black paper showing distribution of Nebulae.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Pierce Brown’s relentlessly entertaining debut channels the excitement of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. “Red Rising ascends above a crowded dystopian field.”—USA Today ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR—Entertainment Weekly, BuzzFeed, Shelf Awareness “I live for the dream that my children will be born free,” she says. “That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them.” “I live for you,” I say sadly. Eo kisses my cheek. “Then you must live for more.” Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow—and Reds like him—are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class. Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity’s overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society’s ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so. Praise for Red Rising “[A] spectacular adventure . . . one heart-pounding ride . . . Pierce Brown’s dizzyingly good debut novel evokes The Hunger Games, Lord of the Flies, and Ender’s Game. . . . Book excerpt: English astronomer Richard A. Proctor was already a well-known populariser of science when he published Other Worlds Than Ours in 1870, joining a ferocious debate about the possibility of life on other planets in which Whewell (1853) and Brewster (1854) had also participated. Taking his cue from the seventeenth-century French astronomer Fontenelle's classic book The Plurality of Worlds, Proctor discusses Victorian discoveries about the solar system and describes what was then known about each of the planets. He evaluates the habitability of Mars, Jupiter, Mercury, Venus and Saturn in the light of his belief in the possibility of extraterrestrial life. The text includes many illustrations of the planets, a spectacular map of Mars, and theoretical views of the Milky Way. Influenced by Darwin, Proctor had a teleological view of the universe and believed that eventually the cosmos would be filled with living things.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1895, this volume contains a series of arguments against the idea that the world is round. The belief that the Earth is flat and not a globe existed in many ancient civilisations, but we now know that this is not true. However, even today there are those who believe in a flat earth, just as there was when ideas of a spherical earth were relatively new. Within this book, the author explains why these new ideas of the planet as a globe are absurd, with interesting examples and explanations as to precisely why. Highly recommended for those with an interest in Flat Earth theory and the history of astronomy. Contents include: “Ships 'Going Down!'”, “How Much Loner Will it Be?”, “Absurd Theory!”, “No Proof to be Had”, “When the Man Has Time!”, “Earth A Globe”, “The Scientific Wager of 1870”, “Our Opponents Ways and Means”, etc. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this book today in an affordable, modern edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cigarette is the deadliest artifact in the history of human civilization. It is also one of the most beguiling, thanks to more than a century of manipulation at the hands of tobacco industry chemists. In Golden Holocaust, Robert N. Proctor draws on reams of formerly-secret industry documents to explore how the cigarette came to be the most widely-used drug on the planet, with six trillion sticks sold per year. He paints a harrowing picture of tobacco manufacturers conspiring to block the recognition of tobacco-cancer hazards, even as they ensnare legions of scientists and politicians in a web of denial. Proctor tells heretofore untold stories of fraud and subterfuge, and he makes the strongest case to date for a simple yet ambitious remedy: a ban on the manufacture and sale of cigarettes.
