This tradition has been somewhat neglected since the introduc tion of mineral fertilizers at low cost. More and more farmers and scientists are now showing renewed interest in the proper and effective use of org~tnic residues, composts and other recycled organic additives. The role and function of organic amendments in modern agricultural systems have become topics of major interest in the scientific and agricultural communities. Research work on residue disposal has provided new concepts on the interaction between organic components and soils as well as new handling technologies (e. g. pelletizing of organic residues). The trend to conserve energy has led scientists to study the minimal tillage system, to find ways of replacing conventional inorganic fertilizers with natural organic prod ucts or microbial preparations, and to develop new composting methods. The drive to achieve higher yields in commercial greenhouse farming has led to a search for optimum substrates as growth media and for improved management techniques. This has led to the introduction of organic substitutes for peat, nota bly those originating from agricultural wastes. Another important aspect is the current interest in organic farming, where use of synthetic chemicals is avoided or prohibited. An increasing percentage of the population in highly developed countries is willing to pay premium prices for food produced on soils where inorganic fertilizers and other agricultural chemicals have not been used.

Book excerpt: The objectives of this research were to study the P sorption characteristics of soils and the effects of pH and of cation type and concentration on P sorption by soils and minerals. In an attempt to characterize the nature and properties of P sorption sites of soils, P sorption isotherms in a 0.1 N NaC1 system were obtained for six limed and unlimed agricultural soils from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The equilibration time was 48 hours and the concentration of P in the final solution varied from near zero to 20 ugP/ml. Langmuir plots (c/x vs c) of the data resulted in curvilinear and/or multi-straight line relationships suggesting the presence of 2 or more populations of sites with different affinities for P. An iterative multiple regression analysis computer program that assumes that each population of site follows the Langmuir equation was used to analyze the sorption data. Three populations of sites with different affinities for P were detected and the Langmuir constants, k (binding energy term) and b (sorption maximum) were estimated for each population of sites. The median and range for values of k (ml/ug P) and b (ugP/g) for the three populations of site were in decreasing order of affinity for P:K1 = 140, (40-2870) and b1=120 (8-370); K2=2.4, (0.63-10) and b2=174, (25-704); and K3 =0.095, (0.051-0.27) and b3=763 (131-1460). Biochar initially attracted attention for its potential to improve soil fertility and to uncouple the carbon cycle, by storing carbon from the atmosphere in a form that can remain stable for hundreds to thousands of years. Later it was found that biochar had applications in environmental and water science, mining, microbial ecology and other fields. Beneficial effects of biochar and its environmental applications cannot be fully realised unless the chemical, physical, structural and surface properties of biochar are known. Currently many of the analytical procedures used for biochar analysis are not well defined, which makes it difficult to choose the right biochar for an intended use and to compare the existing data for biochars. Also, in some instances the use of inappropriate procedures has led to erroneous or inaccurate values for biochars in the scientific literature.
