This study is limited to the Smith-Ewart case II, which assumes instantaneous free radical termination within polymer particles. Radical desorption mechanism from polymer particles is included in the model and the desorption rate is formulated from the diffusion theory which suggests that the rate coefficient should be inversely proportional to the surface area of polymer particles.

Book excerpt: In this paper, a new control strategy that employs a mid-course correction to control the particle size distribution in emulsion polymerization is developed. In this approach, online and infrequent measurements are used to obtain the states of the system at the mid-course of the process. Then an optimization is performed to obtain the optimal trajectory of the input from the mid-course up to the end of the process. For this optimization, a hybrid model is used. This hybrid model consists of the Fokker-Planck particle size distribution model of emulsion polymerization and a data-driven component which corrects the predictions of the Fokker-Planck model based upon the estimated states of the system at the mid-course of the process.

The control of the full particle-size distribution (PSD) in emulsion polymerization is vital for industrial applications where the target distributions are usually complex and/or multimodal. Despite the strong need, control of the full PSD presents a challenging task mainly due to the complexity of emulsion polymerization and the lack of adequate on-line measurement instrumentation. In this work, in-batch and batch-to-batch control strategies are developed for the regulation of the full PSD in semibatch emulsion copolymerization of Vinyl Acetate/Butyl Acrylate with nonionic surfactants and a redox initiator pair. These strategies are also applicable for regulation of distributions in other particulate systems governed by population balances.

Book excerpt: It is particularly appropriate that this symposium on the emulsion polymeriza tion of vinyl acetate was held in recognition of the industrial importance of poly(vinyl acetate) and vinyl acetate copolymers, and their rather unique properties among emulsion polymers in general. Poly( vinyl acetate) latexes were the first synthetic polymer latexes to be made on a commercial scale: their production using polyvinyl alcohol as emulsifier began in Germany during the mid-1930s and has continued to the present day, growing steadily with the years. Indeed, poly(vinyl acetate) latexes prepared with polyvinyl alcohol are still one of the mainstays of the adhesives industry. With the passing of time, however, vinyl acetate copolymers have been developed: copolymers with maleate esters such as dibutyl maleate, acrylate esters such as ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate, versatic acid esters, and, more recently, ethylene. These versatile copolymers have found increasing use in more sophisticated adhesives with specialized properties, adhesives for clay coatings on paper, carpet backing, and interior and exterior paints. Thus more than 45 years after the first commercial production of vinyl acetate latexes, their use is still growing, both in actual quantities and different applications. The industrial importance of vinyl acetate latexes makes the mechanism and kinetics of their emulsion polymerization of practical as well as scientific interest.
