Book Synopsis Interpretative Master Planning by : Elizabeth Nosek
Download or read book Interpretative Master Planning written by Elizabeth Nosek and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpretative Master Planning: A Framework for Historical Sites begins with the basics of any planning experience: why do an interpretative master plan (IMP) and is your institution ready to undergo such a process? These chapters are followed with straightforward guidance on how to go about organizing the necessary funding to pay for an IMP’s development, the core members of your planning team, choosing stakeholders, hosting focus groups, and using all the information gathered to develop an engaging interpretative master plan that is unique to your museum, historic site, or organization. The book features five case studies highlighting organizations that have undergone the interpretative master planning process. Each case study offers a unique point of view about the process and provides the organization’s conclusions as to what they would or would not do again if they had the choice. The end results showcase the wealth of useful information that can be garnered from an Interpretative Master Planning experience. Interpretative Master Planning: A Framework for Historical Sites offers a complete framework complemented by real-world examples for creating a blueprint that will strengthen any organization’s interpretation.
Book Synopsis Interpretive Planning for Museums by : Marcella Wells
Download or read book Interpretive Planning for Museums written by Marcella Wells and published by Left Coast Press. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Museum professionals' increased focus on visitors in recent years has been demonstrated by, among other things, the enhanced practice of evaluation and the development of interpretive plans. Yet too often, these efforts function independent of one another. This book helps museums integrate visitors' perspectives into interpretive planning by recognizing, defining, and recording desired visitor outcomes throughout the process. The integration of visitor studies in the practice of interpretive planning is also based on the belief that the greater our understanding, tracking, and monitoring of learners, the greater the impact museums will make on public understanding of the science and humanities disciplines. An approach that advocates thoughtful and intentional interpretive planning that constantly integrates visitor perspectives is the next step in working with, rather than for, our communities; a step toward truly becoming visitor-centered and impactful as essential learning institutions of the 21st century.
Book Synopsis Practice-based Perspectives on the Interpretive Planning Process by : Leonor A. Colbert
Download or read book Practice-based Perspectives on the Interpretive Planning Process written by Leonor A. Colbert and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due in part to its idiosyncratic nature, interpretive planning is routinely described as both an art and a science; existing literature puts forth a significant body of guidelines, however, little research describes the gap between literature and practice. The purpose of this research was to describe how interpretive planners navigate the gap between the guidelines put forth in the literature and practice when designing for informal learning. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with seven interpretive planning professionals. The interview questions focused on the interpretive planning process and how it is enacted, the challenges that interpretive planners face, and how those challenges are navigated. The results showed a strong level of consistency and agreement across the participants' practices; while the interpretive planning process is flexible, interpretive planners share a systematic, visitor-centered approach that is grounded in the existing resources, capacities, and goals of the host organization and informed by theory in a range of fields. The results of this study paint a rich picture of the interpretive planning process and how interpretive planners navigate the various challenges that arise.

Book Synopsis Interpreting Slavery at Museums and Historic Sites by : Kristin L. Gallas
Download or read book Interpreting Slavery at Museums and Historic Sites written by Kristin L. Gallas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpreting Slavery at Museums and Historic Sites aims to move the field forward in its collective conversation about the interpretation of slavery—acknowledging the criticism of the past and acting in the present to develop an inclusive interpretation of slavery. Presenting the history of slavery in a comprehensive and conscientious manner is difficult and requires diligence and compassion—for the history itself, for those telling the story, and for those hearing the stories—but it’s a necessary part of our collective narrative about our past, present, and future. This book features best practices for: Interpreting slavery across the country and for many people. The history of slavery, while traditionally interpreted primarily on southern plantations, is increasingly recognized as relevant at historic sites across the nation. It is also more than just an African-American/European-American story—it is relevant to the history of citizens of Latino, Caribbean, African and indigenous descent, as well. It is also pertinent to those descended from immigrants who arrived after slavery, whose stories are deeply intertwined with the legacy of slavery and its aftermath. Developing support within an institution for the interpretation of slavery. Many institutions are reticent to approach such a potentially volatile subject, so this book examines how proponents at several sites, including Monticello and Mount Vernon, were able to make a strong case to their constituents. Training interpreters in not only a depth of knowledge of the subject but also the confidence to speak on this controversial issue in public and the compassion to handle such a sensitive historical issue. The book will be accessible and of interest for professionals at all levels in the public history field, as well as students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in museum studies and public history programs.
