Book excerpt: In this phase of work the Process Development Unit (PDU) is to be remodeled by incorporation of appropriate subsystems to permit operation in continuous process mode. Evidence has accumulated which indicated the Na2CO3 - K2CO3 - Li2CO3 ternary eutectic containing appreciable sulfide ion is much more corrosive than similar systems containing appreciable added CaCO3. It is concluded this is due to the tendency of Ca/sup + +/ to combine with S/sup - -/ to reduce the thermodynamic activity of the latter. The lowered S/sup - -/ activity results in lessened corrosivity. CaCO3 will be added at 20 mole percent to salt compositions employed in future PDU runs. Equipment failure experience and plugging due to corrosion products is detailed and proposed methods of alleviating the problems are described.

These items include the piping support structure and piping and process vessels or equipment that must be ''alonized'' for corrosion protection. Major procurements have been initiated. Orders have been placed with low bidders for procurement of the extraction and regeneration columns and for the major portion of the trace heaters needed. The bid package for piping, coarse de-entrainer, salt cooler, venturi feed tank, and venturi (all of which will require ''alonizing'') has been submitted to the Purchasing Department for distribution to selected vendors. A comprehensive stress analysis on piping and support structures has been conducted with the aid of well known computer codes by personnel from the Engineering Department. Portions of the PDU have been dismantled and some site preparation work has been completed to facilitate impending construction.

This work included removal of portions of the old structure, relocation of one large pot furnace, and addition of 20 ft to the stack. All pipe and equipment assembled and mounted on the support structure. This was a preliminary check of fit. All of this equipment was then disassembled and crated and shipped to Alon Processing, Inc. (Tarentum, PA) for ''alonizing, '' a process which provides corrosion protection. Procurement activities continued. Orders have been placed for all electrical gear with which to power the trace heaters, all electrical controllers, and all electric signal measuring equipment. In addition a tar trap, all Grayloc fittings, all gaskets, all thermocouple wire, ceramic beads, and ceramic thermocouple sheaths have been ordered. Much of this equipment has been received. Requirements for gas and liquid sampling have been analyzed. It is planned to assemble the analytical equipment and analyze synthetic samples to resolve problems and train personnel. Theoretical analysis to devise a computer model of the process useful in data analysis and operating guidance is proceeding. Revisions to the Precedence Diagram indicate additional schedule slippage occurred due to delays in receipt of Grayloc flange components and difficulties with preliminary assembly of equipment.

The subcontract to Alon Processing Inc. was completed some six weeks behind schedule but all ''Alonized'' pipe, fittings, and vessels have now been returned to us. This material has been assembled and mounted on the support structure. A major part of the electrical work including assembly of relay and circuit breaker enclosures, installation of screwcover wireway, and installation of large transformers has been completed. Installation of thermocouples and electrical heating elements by Battelle-Northwest's crafts personnel is completed and final wiring is nearly complete. Installation of high-temperature insulation (Kaowool) and a final waterproof outer covering is 90% complete. Test operation of individual equipment items is proceeding as rapidly as these become operational.
