Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history behind the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of population policies in the more developed, the less developed, and the least developed countries from 1950 until today, as well as their future prospects. It links population policies with the theories of the demographic, epidemiological, and migratory transitions. It begins by summarizing the demographic situation around the world, with an emphasis on population policies and their underlying theories. Then, it reviews the early efforts to reduce mortality and fertility in the developing countries. This is followed by a description of the internationalization of the debate on population issues and the transformation of these programs into more formal population policies, particularly in the developing countries. The book reviews also the situation of the developed countries and their specific challenges – sub-replacement fertility, population aging, and immigration – and examines the effectiveness of population policies. It also explores the way forward and future prospects for population policies over the next decades. The book provides numerous concrete examples from all over the world, and show how population policies are actually implemented and what have been their successes as well as their constraints. Above all, the book highlights the importance of understanding underlying demographic trends when assessing the development prospects of any country. The book is recommended for not only demographers, social scientists, and policymakers but also economists and political scientists who are interested in social and demographic change around the world. Demography students and researchers who are interested in applying knowledge on population trends and prospects in designing and evaluating public policies will find this an invaluable reference work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: People are living longer, creating an unexpected boom in the elderly population. Longevity is increasing not only in wealthy countries but in developing nations as well. In response, many policy makers and scholars are preparing for a global crisis of aging. But for too long, Western experts have conceived of aging as a universal predicament—one that supposedly provokes the same welfare concerns in every context. In the twenty-first century, Kavita Sivaramakrishnan writes, we must embrace a new approach to the problem, one that prioritizes local agendas and values. As the World Ages is a history of how gerontologists, doctors, social scientists, and activists came to define the issue of global aging. Sivaramakrishnan shows that transnational organizations like the United Nations, private NGOs, and philanthropic foundations embraced programs that reflected prevailing Western ideas about development and modernization. The dominant paradigm often assumed that, because large-scale growth of an aging population happened first in the West, developing societies will experience the issues of aging in the same ways and on the same terms as their Western counterparts. But regional experts are beginning to question this one-size-fits-all model and have chosen instead to recast Western expertise in response to provincial conditions. Focusing on South Asia and Africa, Sivaramakrishnan shows how regional voices have argued for an approach that responds to local needs and concerns. The research presented in As the World Ages will help scholars, policy makers, and advocates appreciate the challenges of this recent shift in global demographics and find solutions sensitive to real life in diverse communities.

Book excerpt: Beginning with an overview of the distribution and utilization of healthcare facilities in developing countries, this book presents an in-depth investigation of the role they play in Mau district, India. It analyses primary data collected through a sample survey of 680 households selected from 31 villages and two urban centres of Mau district. It then moves on to discuss the conceptual and theoretical framework of healthcare facilities, throwing light on the variation in their availability, accessibility and affordability. The book then considers the distribution of healthcare facilities, focusing on their spatio-temporal change and rural-urban variations, before moving on to addressing the relationship between the socio-economic characteristics of inhabitants and their utilization pattern of healthcare facilities in the area studied.

It sets forth the sources, limitations, underlying definitions, and bases of classification, as well as the techniques and methods that have been developed for summarizing and analyzing the data.

This book was released on 2006-01-03 with total page 2857 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This four-volume collection of over 140 original chapters covers virtually everything of interest to demographers, sociologists, and others. Over 100 authors present population subjects in ways that provoke thinking and lead to the creation of new perspectives, not just facts and equations to be memorized. The articles follow a theory-methods-applications approach and so offer a kind of "one-stop shop" that is well suited for students and professors who need non-technical summaries, such as political scientists, public affairs specialists, and others. Unlike shorter handbooks, Demography: Analysis and Synthesis offers a long overdue, thorough treatment of the field. Choosing the analytical method that fits the data and the situation requires insights that the authors and editors of Demography: Analysis and Synthesis have explored and developed. This extended examination of demographic tools not only seeks to explain the analytical tools themselves, but also the relationships between general population dynamics and their natural, economic, social, political, and cultural environments. Limiting themselves to human populations only, the authors and editors cover subjects that range from the core building blocks of population change--fertility, mortality, and migration--to the consequences of demographic changes in the biological and health fields, population theories and doctrines, observation systems, and the teaching of demography. The international perspectives brought to these subjects is vital for those who want an unbiased, rounded overview of these complex, multifaceted subjects. Topics to be covered: * Population Dynamics and the Relationship Between Population Growth and Structure * The Determinants of Fertility * The Determinants of Mortality * The Determinants of Migration * Historical and Geographical Determinants of Population * The Effects of Population on Health, Economics, Culture, and the Environment * Population Policies * Data Collection Methods and Teaching about Population Studies * All chapters share a common format * Each chapter features several cross-references to other chapters * Tables, charts, and other non-text features are widespread * Each chapter contains at least 30 bibliographic citations

This book was released on 1968 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intrauterine devices (IUDs) have an antifertility effect in every animal tested, but this effect is manifested differently among the species. 6-8 million women use the IUD with a pregnancy rate in the United States of from 1.5-3/100 women during the first year of use. These rates decline with use. 80% will continue with the device in the first year, 70% for the second, and about 50% by the fifth year. Adverse reactions include irregular bleeding and cramps for the first 2-3 months and this accounts for 60% of removal. Pelvic inflammatory disease has been reported to be about 2.5% the first year, 1.5% during the second. Highest incidence was in the first month after insertion. The Committee recommended more stringent standards for inserters and devices and more care in insertion. A survey of the Fellows of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists disclosed 15 instances of intestinal obstruction following perforation of the uterus, 13 in which the closed type IUD was used. "The Committee is adverse to the use of currently available closed devices, except in very unusual circumstances." Monitoring women wearing IUDs for cancer in the same manner as for normal women was suggested. The mortality figure for IUDs was .2/10,000 insertions. The current legislation under consideration by the Food and Drug Administration for certain classes of devices secured or placed in the body was considered satisfactory, with means for confidential reporting of adverse reactions recommended. The Committee recommended areas for further research. Task force reports and a bibliography of clinical reports on IUDs in the English literature 1959-1967 were presented. The report includes a list of available IUDs and exhibits of labeling submitted by some manufacturers.
