This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on Outdoor Human Comfort of the Aerodynamics Committee of the Aerospace Division of ASCE This report describes state-of-the-art methods for assessing and improving outdoor human comfort. Factors affecting outdoor comfort are wind, air temperature, humidity, sun, and precipitation. Wind, in particular, is greatly affected by large buildings, and many modern developments are wind-tunnel tested to examine how wind flows around new buildings will affect pedestrians. This report discusses testing methods and criteria for assessing comfort and safety. Criteria are expressed in terms of both threshold wind speeds for discomfort and also the percentage of time that conditions should be below those thresholds. Historically, wind and its mechanical effects?such as picking up dust, impairing balance, or blowing people over?were the factors receiving the most attention. More recently, however, methods have been developed to address other factors, such as solar radiation, air temperature, and humidity. Topics include: elements of the microclimate; methods of determining wind conditions; wind criteria and control measures; and assessing thermal comfort.

Book Synopsis Wind Loading of Structures by : John D. Holmes
Download or read book Wind Loading of Structures written by John D. Holmes and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-08 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind forces from extreme wind events are the dominant loading for many parts of the world, exacerbated by climate change and the continued construction of tall buildings and structures. This authoritative source, for practising and academic structural engineers and graduate students, ties the principles of wind loads on structures to the relevant aspects of meteorology, bluff-body aerodynamics, probability and statistics, and structural dynamics. This new edition covers: Climate change effects on extreme winds – particularly those from tropical cyclones, hurricanes and typhoons Modelling of potential wind vulnerability and damage Developments in extreme value probability analysis of extreme wind speeds and directions Explanation of the difference between ‘return period’ and ‘average recurrence interval’, as well as ‘bootstrapping’ techniques for deriving confidence limits Wind over water, and profiles and turbulence in non-synoptic winds An expanded chapter on internal pressures produced by wind for various opening and permeability scenarios Aerodynamic shaping of high- and low-rise buildings Recent developments in five major wind codes and standards A new chapter on computational fluid dynamics (CFD), as applied to wind engineering A greatly expanded appendix providing the basic information on extreme wind climates for over 140 countries and territories Additional examples for many chapters in this book

Book Synopsis Wind Engineering 1983 3B by : J.D. Holmes
Download or read book Wind Engineering 1983 3B written by J.D. Holmes and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind Engineering 1983, Part B contains the proceedings of the Sixth International Conference on Wind Engineering, held in Gold Coast, Australia, on March 21-25, 1983 and in Auckland, New Zealand, on April 6-7, 1983 under the auspices of the International Association for Wind Engineering. The conference provided a forum for discussing topics related to wind energy and wind engineering, from bluff body aerodynamics and mathematical models of wind loading to full-scale measurement and modeling of buildings and other structures. Comprised of 37 chapters, this volume begins with a description of two probabilistic wind load models used in assessing the safety indices of structural members in cyclonic and non-cyclonic regions of Australia. The discussion then turns to the effect of uncertainties in wind load estimation on reliability assessments; wind tunnel test program and risk analysis for structural design; and application of wind engineering to low-rise housing. Subsequent sections focus on wind loading of chimneys and cooling towers, bridges, cables and transmission lines, and offshore platforms. The fundamentals of bluff body aerodynamics are also examined, along with mathematical models of wind loading. This monograph will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers concerned with wind energy and wind engineering.
