Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethiopia is one of the world's oldest countries; its Rift Valley may be the location where the ancestors of humankind originated more than four million years ago. With a population of 67 million people today, it is the third most populous country on the African continent after Nigeria and Egypt. It is the source of 86 percent of the water reaching the Aswan Dam in Egypt, most of it carried by the amazing Blue Nile. Ethiopia offers major historical sites such as the pre-Christian palace at Yeha, the stele and tombs of the old Kingdom of Axum, and the rock-carved churches of Lalibela. For anyone interested in Ethiopia, this historical dictionary, through its individual and carefully cross-referenced entries, captures the importance and intrigue of this truly significant African nation. Historical Dictionary of Ethiopia appeals to all levels of readers, providing entries for each of Ethiopia's 85 ethnic groups and covering a broad range of cultural, political, and economic topics. Readers interested in the cultural aspects or who are planning to visit Ethiopia will find a wealth of entries on art, literature, handicrafts, music, dance, bird life, geography, and historic tourist sites. Practitioners in government and non-governmental organizations will find entries on pressing economic, social, and political issues such as HIV/AIDS, female circumcision , debt, human rights, and the environment. The important historical role of missionaries and the combination of conflict and cooperation between Christians and Muslims in the region are also issues reviewed. And, finally, many of the entries highlight relations between Ethiopia and her neighbors-Eritrea, Somalia, Somaliland, Djibouti, Kenya, and Sudan. In the bibliography, considerable emphasis has been placed on including both new and old materials covering all facets of Ethiopia, organized for easy identification by areas of major interest.

Book Synopsis Institutional Adjustment for Economic Growth by : Per Ronnas
Download or read book Institutional Adjustment for Economic Growth written by Per Ronnas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-23 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume focuses on the special category of countries popularly referred to as ‘transition economies’ through an analysis of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and their role in Asian economies, with a view to assessing whether they could or should provide a model for African countries. The present volume explores the institutional peculiarities displayed by ‘transition economies’. These are economies which are undergoing a comprehensive and fundamental societal transformation with a view to creating a utopian communist society within the frame of a centrally administered economy, then a pluralistic society based on a market economy and the rule of law. Much of the debate on the economic performance of African LCD's has focused on informal sector activities or on the imperative to achieve structural adjustment. By highlighting instead the challenges facing two of the least successful among the African economies - Ethiopia and Tanzania, both of which share a socialist past - this book moves beyond the above issues. It argues that institutional adjustment is critical to the prospects for success in developing transition economies. As such the book investigates the transaction costs environment within which small-scale industrial activities are set. By drawing extensively on the Asian experience, (predominantly China and Vietnam but also India and Taiwan), it identifies sources of transaction costs by examining not only the transactional disadvantages of small-scale production, but also the past and present sources of institutional inefficiency.

This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa includes five of the world's fastest-growing economies, as well as a treasure chest of natural resources. Those very things, however, have caused multinational corporations to flock to the continent in an attempt take control of those resources. An African renaissance is hard to conceptualize, but that is exactly what is beginning to effect real change, with the assistance of both public officials and ordinary citizens. This study theorizes an African renaissance as the dynamic interaction of strategy and process and seeks to motivate researchers to shift analysis in that direction. This shift emphasizes the task of broadly structuring African renaissance as a geopolitical system is more important than that of promoting it within a specific program of nations. Unleashing Africa's Resilience provides the necessary tools for research-based policymaking and the critical thinking needed to help Africa build a vibrant economy and become a more prominent player on the world stage.

As a method of analyzing the way in which the digital age has connected society more than ever, chaos and complexity theory serves as a tactic to tie world events and cope with the information overload that is associated with heightened social connectivity. The Handbook of Research on Chaos and Complexity Theory in the Social Sciences explores the theories of chaos and complexity as applied to a variety of disciplines including political science, organizational and management science, economics, and education. Presenting diverse research-based perspectives on mathematical patterns in the world system, this publication is an essential reference source for scholars, researchers, mathematicians, social theorists, and graduate-level students in a variety of disciplines.

Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Ethiopian Economy by : Fantu Cheru
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Ethiopian Economy written by Fantu Cheru and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 1017 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a war-torn and famine-plagued country at the beginning of the 1990s, Ethiopia is today emerging as one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa. Growth in Ethiopia has surpassed that of every other sub-Saharan country over the past decade and is forecast by the International Monetary Fund to exceed 8 percent over the next two years. The government has set its eyes on transforming the country into a middle-income country by 2025, and into a leading manufacturing hub in Africa. The Oxford Handbook of the Ethiopian Economy studies this country's unique model of development, where the state plays a central role, and where a successful industrialization drive has challenged the long-held erroneous assumption that industrial policy will never work in poor African countries. While much of the volume is focused on post-1991 economic development policy and strategy, the analysis is set against the background of the long history of Ethiopia, and more specifically on the Imperial period that ended in 1974, the socialist development experiment of the Derg regime between 1974 and 1991, and the policies and strategies of the current EPRDF government that assumed power in 1991. Including a range of contributions from both academic and professional standpoints, this volume is a key reference work on the economy of Ethiopia.
Book Synopsis Poverty, Income Distribution and Labour Markets in Ethiopia by : Arne Bigsten
Download or read book Poverty, Income Distribution and Labour Markets in Ethiopia written by Arne Bigsten and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2005 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world with a per capita income of just above US$100. With such a low average income, poverty is of course widespread, so understanding the causes of poverty is of utmost importance, but until recently very little household-data has been available. This study deals with many aspects of poverty and income-distribution in Ethiopia, providing a wealth of information on household-income and its determinants. The book is of interest both to academics working on poverty analysis and to policy makers and donors collaborating with Ethiopia.
