Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, medical educators intent on transforming American physicians into scientifically trained, elite professionals recognized the value of medical school design for their reform efforts. Between 1893 and 1940, nearly every medical college in the country rebuilt or substantially renovated its facility. In Building Schools, Making Doctors, Katherine Carroll reveals how the schools constructed during this fifty-year period did more than passively house a remodeled system of medical training; they actively participated in defining and promoting an innovative pedagogy, modern science, and the new physician. Interdisciplinary and wide ranging, her study moves architecture from the periphery of medical education to the center, uncovering a network of medical educators, architects, and philanthropists who believed that the educational environment itself shaped how students learned and the type of physicians they became. Carroll offers the first comprehensive study of the science and pedagogy formulated by the buildings, the influence of the schools’ donors and architects, the impact of the structures on the urban landscape and the local community, and the facilities’ privileging of white men within the medical profession during this formative period for physicians and medical schools.
Book Synopsis Keeping the University Free and Growing by : Herman Lee Donovan
Download or read book Keeping the University Free and Growing written by Herman Lee Donovan and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the fifteen years of Herman L. Donovan's presidency (1941-56), the University of Kentucky entered a new era of maturity as an educational institution. The period was characterized by many administrative crises, such as those arising from the flood of veteran students following World War II, the rapidly rising costs of maintenance and expansion, and the apathy or active opposition of many Kentuckians to the concept of a free and developing university. Nevertheless, during this same period tremendous advances, both in material assets and in the less tangible qualities of academic life, were made. Realizing that evaluation of his administration must wait for the perspective of future historians, Mr. Donovan has not undertaken a history of the University during his presidency. He has chosen, instead, to give his readers something which only he could give—an intimate view of the president's personal, day-to-day struggles during this crucial period of the University's history. Mr. Donovan's account of the problems and satisfactions of being a university president is humorous and sincere. His story will be of absorbing interest to college administrators who face similar problems, and to all friends of the University of Kentucky. In addition, President Donovan has included a valuable appendix of statistical material which will be useful to the historian of higher education, and he has compiled a reading list of works of special interest to the college administrator.

Book Synopsis Albert Shaw of the Review of Reviews by : Lloyd J. Graybar
Download or read book Albert Shaw of the Review of Reviews written by Lloyd J. Graybar and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Albert Shaw (1857-1947) reflected in microcosm the changes that American society was undergoing through a critical period. This first full-length study focuses on two themes: Shaw's career as editor and publisher of the Review of Reviews, an influential monthly journal in the early years of the twentieth century, and Shaw's career as a public figure. Shaw was a member of the Progressive movement from its inception, but his concern and interests were wide-ranging, centering to a large degree on the question of what the industrialization of America meant. Lloyd J. Graybar shows incisively the ways in which Shaw's professional concerns interacted with his attitude toward public issues.
