Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Normal with unknown variance (NUV) priors are a central idea of sparse Bayesian learning and allow variational representations of non-Gaussian priors. More specifically, such variational representations can be seen as parameterized Gaussians, wherein the parameters are generally unknown. The advantage is apparent: for fixed parameters, NUV priors are Gaussian, and hence computationally compatible with Gaussian models. Moreover, working with (linear-)Gaussian models is particularly attractive since the Gaussian distribution is closed under affine transformations, marginalization, and conditioning. Interestingly, the variational representation proves to be rather universal than restrictive: many common sparsity-promoting priors (among them, in particular, the Laplace prior) can be represented in this manner. In estimation problems, parameters or variables of the underlying model are often subject to constraints (e.g., discrete-level constraints). Such constraints cannot adequately be represented by linear-Gaussian models and generally require special treatment. To handle such constraints within a linear-Gaussian setting, we extend the idea of NUV priors beyond its original use for sparsity. In particular, we study compositions of existing NUV priors, referred to as composite NUV priors, and show that many commonly used model constraints can be represented in this way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a comprehensive study of multivariate time series with linear state space structure. The emphasis is put on both the clarity of the theoretical concepts and on efficient algorithms for implementing the theory. In particular, it investigates the relationship between VARMA and state space models, including canonical forms. It also highlights the relationship between Wiener-Kolmogorov and Kalman filtering both with an infinite and a finite sample. The strength of the book also lies in the numerous algorithms included for state space models that take advantage of the recursive nature of the models. Many of these algorithms can be made robust, fast, reliable and efficient. The book is accompanied by a MATLAB package called SSMMATLAB and a webpage presenting implemented algorithms with many examples and case studies. Though it lays a solid theoretical foundation, the book also focuses on practical application, and includes exercises in each chapter. It is intended for researchers and students working with linear state space models, and who are familiar with linear algebra and possess some knowledge of statistics.

Book excerpt: This Special Issue addresses the general problem of a proper match between the demands of energy users and the units for energy conversion and storage, by means of proper design and operation of the overall energy system configuration. The focus is either on systems including single plants or groups of plants, connected or not to one or more energy distribution networks. In both cases, the optimum design and operation involve decisions about thermodynamic processes, about the type, number, design parameters of components/plants, and storage capacities, and about mutual interconnections and the interconnections with the distribution grids. The problem is absolutely general, encompassing design and operation of energy systems for single houses, groups of houses, industries, industrial districts, municipal areas, regions and countries. The presented papers show that similar approaches can be used in different applications, although a general standard has not been achieved yet.

Book excerpt: This book contains the edited version of lectures and selected papers presented at the NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE ON COMPUTER AIDED OPTIMAL DESIGN: Structural and Mechanical Systems, held in Tr6ia, Portugal, 29th June to 11th July 1986, and organized by CEMUL -Center of Mechanics and Materials of the Technical University of Lisbon. The Institute was attended by 120 participants from 21 countries, including leading scientists and engineers from universities, research institutions and industry, and Ph.D. students. Some participants presented invited and contributed papers during the Institute and almost all participated actively in discussions on scientific aspects during the Institute. The Advanced Study Institute provided a forum for interaction among eminent scientists and engineers from different schools of thought and young reseachers. The Institute addressed the foundations and current state of the art of essential techniques related to computer aided optimal design of structural and mechanical systems, namely: Vari ational and Finite Element Methods in Optimal Design, Numerical Optimization Techniques, Design Sensitivity Analysis, Shape Optimal Design, Adaptive Finite Element Methods in Shape Optimization, CAD Technology, Software Development Techniques, Integrated Computer Aided Design and Knowledge Based Systems. Special topics of growing importance were also pre sented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides an overview of the recent developments in modern control systems including new theoretical findings and successful examples of practical implementation of the control theory in different areas of industrial and special applications. Recent Developments in Automatic Control Systems consists of extended versions of selected papers presented at the XXVI International Conference on Automatic Control "Automation 2020" (October 13–15, 2020, Kyiv, Ukraine) which is the main Ukrainian Control Conference organized by the Ukrainian Association on Automatic Control (national member organization of IFAC) and the National Technical University of Ukraine "Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute". This is the third monograph in the River Publishers series in Automation, Control and Robotics based on the selected papers of the Ukrainian Control Conferences "Automation", in particular, the first monograph Control Systems: Theory and Applications (2018) was published based on "Automation – 2017" and the second monograph Advanced Control Systems: Theory and Applications was based on "Automation – 2018". The monograph is divided into three main parts: (a) Advances in Theoretical Research of Control Systems; (b) Advances in Control Systems Application; (c) Recent Developments in Collaborative Automation. The chapters have been structured to provide an easy-to-follow introduction to the topics that are addressed, including the most relevant references, so that anyone interested in this field can get started in the area. This book may be useful for researchers and students who are interesting in recent developments in modern control systems, robust adaptive systems, optimal control, fuzzy control, motion control, identification, modelling, differential games, evolutionary optimization, reliability control, security control, intelligent robotics and cyber–physical systems.
