Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Physics at KAON", an international meeting jointly organized by the KFA Jillich and TRI UMF, was held in the Physikzentrum Bad Honnef from June 7 through June 9, 1989. This was one of a series of meetings - the first one in Europe - in which plans for the medium energy physics laboratory KAON were presented and some aspects of the physics at this new facility were discussed. The meeting focussed mainly on the topics of hadron spectroscopy, J{ -meson scattering, strangeness in nuclei, and rare decays. Also presented were some of the research programs at SATURNE and COSY which may well lead to KAON physics in the future. These proceed ings include articles which summarize our current experimental and theoretical knowledge in the various areas, as well as papers which describe lines of research feasible with KAON. The large number of participants - limited, in fact, by the capacity of the Physikzentrum - clearly demonstrates the great interest of the European physics community in the research avenues which will be opened by the high-intensity hadron facilities. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the IX International Conference on Hypernuclear and Strange Particle Physics (HYP 2006). This conference series is devoted to the progress of our knowledge about strangeness flavor in hadron and nuclear physics. Besides the traditional topics such as hadron structure, hypernuclear spectroscopy and weak decay of hypernuclei, a particular focus of this conference was on the properties of strange mesons and their binding in nuclear systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Standard Model of particle physics is an amazingly successful theory describing the fundamental particles and forces of nature. This text, written for a two-semester graduate course on the Standard Model, develops a practical understanding of the theoretical concepts it's built upon, to prepare students to enter research. The author takes a historical approach to demonstrate to students the process of discovery which is often overlooked in other textbooks, presenting quantum field theory and symmetries as the necessary tools for describing and understanding the Standard Model. He develops these tools using a basic understanding of quantum mechanics and classical field theory, such as Maxwell's electrodynamics, before discussing the important role that Noether's theorem and conserved charges play in the theory. Worked examples feature throughout the text, while homework exercises are included for the first five parts, with solutions available online for instructors. Inspired by the author's own teaching experience, suggestions for independent research topics have been provided for the second-half of the course, which students can then present to the rest of the class.

Bell is the result of the "Quantum (Un)speakables" conference organised by the University of Vienna. The title was taken from a famous note written by John Bell during the "Schrödinger Symposium" of 1987. The book leads the reader from the foundations of quantum mechanics to quantum entanglement, quantum cryptography, and quantum information, and is written for all those who need more insight into this new area of physics.

Book excerpt: The Few Body Problem covers the proceedings of the Ninth International Conference on the Few Body Problem, held in Eugene, Oregon, USA on August 17-23, 1980. The book focuses on relativistic and particle physics, intermediate energy physics, nuclear, atomic, and molecular physics, and chemistry. The selection first offers information on nucleon-nucleon interaction in applications, including derivation of the nucleon-nucleon potential, nuclear many-body problem, and classic nuclear structure. The text also looks at three- and four-nucleon systems and graphs of three-body wave functions. The publication elaborates on K-meson experiments and non-mesonic few-nucleon phenomena. Topics include tests of invariance principles, properties of nuclei, dynamics, and hypernuclear physics. The manuscript also ponders on the Coulomb problem, atomic, molecular, and nuclear collisions, and muon capture in hydrogen isotopes. The selection is a dependable reference for readers interested in the few body problem.

Book excerpt: The rapid and continuing growth on liquid crystal research is not only the result of the high success of liquid crystal display technology, but also because of the great potential for new and improved applications. This is a unique area of scientific research in which the joint research efforts of chemists, physicists and material scientists have led to spectacular practical developments which are been exploited commercially. This two-volume set of the series Structure and Bonding focuses on the structural properties of liquid crystals. The balanced, in-depth coverage of both theoretical and experimental aspects by leading experts serves as a basis for further innovations in this dynamic field and makes these volumes an essential resource for both academic and industrial researchers.

Book excerpt: In preparing the program for this Conference, the third in the series, it soon became evident that it was not possible to in clude in a conference of reasonable duration all the topics that might be subsumed under the broad title, "High Energy Physics and Nuclear Structure. " From their initiation, in 1963, it has been as much the aim of these Conferences to provide some bridges between the steadily separating domains of particle and nuclear physics, as to explore thoroughly the borderline territory between the two - the sort of no-man's-land that lies unclaimed, or claimed by both sides. The past few years have witnessed the rapid development of many new routes connecting the two major areas of 'elementary par ticles' and 'nuclear structure', and these now spread over a great expanse of physics, logically perhaps including the whole of both subjects. (As recently as 1954, an International Conference on 'Nuclear and Meson Physics' did, in fact, embrace both fields!) Since it is not now possible to traverse, in one Conference, this whole network of connections, still less to explore the entire ter ritory it covers, the choice of topics has to be in some degree arbitrary. It is hoped that ours has served the purpose of fairly exemplifying many areas where physicists, normally separated by their diverse interests, can find interesting and important topics which bring them together.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to resolve the problem of electron and hole transport with a coherent and consistent theory that is relevant to the understanding of transport phenomena in submicron devices. Along the road, readers encounter landmarks in theoretical physics as the authors guide them through the strong and weak aspects of various hypotheses.
