Book Synopsis Remittance Markets in Africa by : Sanket Mohapatra
Download or read book Remittance Markets in Africa written by Sanket Mohapatra and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remittances sent by African migrants have become an important source of external finance for countries in the Sub-Saharan African region. In many African countries, these flows are larger than foreign direct investment and portfolio debt and equity flows. In some cases, they are similar in size to official aid from multilateral and bilateral donors. Remittance markets in Africa, however, remain less developed than other regions. The share of informal or unrecorded remittances is among the highest for Sub-Saharan African countries. Remittance costs tend to be significantly higher in Africa both for sending remittances from outside the region and for within-Africa (South-South) remittance corridors. At the same time, the remittance landscape in Africa is rapidly changing with the introduction of new remittance technologies, in particular mobile money transfers and branchless banking. This book presents findings of surveys of remittance service providers conducted in eight Sub-Saharan African countries and in three key destination countries. It looks at issues relating to costs, competition, innovation and regulation, and discusses policy options for leveraging remittances for development in Africa.

Book Synopsis Women's Economic Empowerment by : Kate Grantham
Download or read book Women's Economic Empowerment written by Kate Grantham and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the barriers to women’s economic empowerment in the Global South. Drawing on evidence from a wide range of countries, the book outlines important lessons and practical solutions for promoting gender equality. Despite global progress in closing gender gaps in education and health, women’s economic empowerment has lagged behind, with little evidence that economic growth promotes gender equality. International Development Research Centre’s (IDRC) Growth and Economic Opportunities for Women (GrOW) programme was set up to provide policy lessons, insights, and concrete solutions that could lead to advances in gender equality, particularly on the role of institutions and macroeconomic growth, barriers to labour market access for women, and the impact of women’s care responsibilities. This book showcases rigorous and multi-disciplinary research emerging from this ground-breaking programme, covering topics such as the school-to-work transition, child marriage, unpaid domestic work and childcare, labour market segregation, and the power of social and cultural norms that prevent women from fully participating in better paid sectors of the economy. With a range of rich case studies from Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nepal, Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and Uganda, this book is perfect for students, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers working on women’s economic empowerment and gender equality in the Global South.
Book Synopsis Degraded Forests in Eastern Africa by : Frans Bongers
Download or read book Degraded Forests in Eastern Africa written by Frans Bongers and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest degradation as a result of logging, shifting cultivation, agriculture and urban development is a major issue throughout the tropics. It leads to loss in soil fertility, water resources and biodiversity, as well as contributes to climate change. Efforts are therefore required to try to minimize further degradation and restore tropical forests in a sustainable way. This is the first research-based book to examine this problem in East Africa. The specific focus is on the forests of Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda, but the lessons learned are shown to be applicable to neighbouring countries and others in the tropics. A wide range of forest types are covered, from dry Miombo forest and afromontane forests, to forest-savannah mosaics and wet forest types. Current management practices are assessed and examples of good practice presented. The role of local people is also emphasized. The authors describe improved management and restoration through silviculture, plantation forestry and agroforestry, leading to improvements in timber production, biodiversity conservation and the livelihoods of local people.
Book Synopsis Leapfrogging Africa by : Reiner Klingholz
Download or read book Leapfrogging Africa written by Reiner Klingholz and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we look at the potential for development leaps in Africa in three key sectors that provided the basis for socioeconomic development around the world: health, education and agriculture. Advances in these sectors increase the human capital, create jobs and economic opportunities and have a positive influence on each other. Healthy and well-fed children can learn better; hygiene and better medical care diminish infant mortality, which reduces the desire for a large number of children; education for women promotes gender equality and causes birth rates to fall further. This creates a population structure under which the economy can grow particularly well: a demographic dividend becomes possible.

Book Synopsis Design of Appropriate Agroforestry Interventions in Uganda by : Sara Namirembe
Download or read book Design of Appropriate Agroforestry Interventions in Uganda written by Sara Namirembe and published by Fountain Books. This book was released on 2007 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The design of appropriate agroforesty intervention in Uganda has the potential to improve farmer's livelihoods in line with the national Plan for Modernisation of Agriculture; and district forest services within the decentralised government framework, enable service providers to promote appropriate agroforestry interventions depending on local conditions. It was against this background that this manual was developed. A training needs assessment revealed that extension staff were few and did not have sufficient understanding of the potential gains and pitfalls to adequately advise farmers on a case by case basis. Jacob Godfrey Agea is a Lecturer in the Department of Community Forestry and Extension, Makerere University. Sara Namirembe was previously a Lecturer in the Department of Community Forestry and Extension, Makerere University, and currently woks in civil society organisational work. Mohamed Bukenya is a Lecturer in the Department of Forestry Management, Makerere University, and the coordinator for agriculture and environment in FINIDP, a civil society organisation. Ahamada Zziwa is a Lecturer in the Department of Forestry Products Engineering, Makerere University, and the executive director of FINIDP. Daniel Waiswa is a Lecturer in the Department of Forestry Management, Makerere University, and a specialist in bio-informatics.

Book Synopsis Equids--zebras, Asses, and Horses by : Patricia Des Roses Moehlman
Download or read book Equids--zebras, Asses, and Horses written by Patricia Des Roses Moehlman and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new Equid Action Plan provides current knowledge on the biology, ecology and conservation status of wild zebras, asses, and horses. It specifies what information is lacking, and prioritizes needed conservation actions. The Action Plan also provides chapters on equid taxonomy, genetics, reproductive biology, and population dynamics. These chapters highlight unsolved issues of taxonomy and genetics. They also provide information and insight into the special demographic and genetic challenges of managing small populations. The chapter on disease provides a review of documented equine disease and epidemiology and focuses on priorities for equid conservation health. The final chapter deals with the importance of developing an assessment methodology that explicitly considers the role of equids in ecosystems and the ecological processes that are necessary for ecosystem viability. The approach of combining ecological field studies and ecosystem modeling should prove useful for the scientific management and conservation of wild equids worldwide. These chapters provide research and conservation practitioners with new information and paradigms.
Book Synopsis Livelihood and Landscape Change in Africa: Future Trajectories for Improved Well-Being under a Changing Climate by : Sheona Shackleton
Download or read book Livelihood and Landscape Change in Africa: Future Trajectories for Improved Well-Being under a Changing Climate written by Sheona Shackleton and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-10-08 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on a Special Issue of the journal LAND that draws together a collection of 11 diverse articles at the nexus of climate change, landscapes, and livelihoods in rural Africa; all explore the links between livelihood and landscape change, including shifts in farming practices and natural resource use and management. The articles, which are all place-based case studies across nine African countries, cover three not necessarily mutually exclusive thematic areas, namely: smallholder farming livelihoods under new climate risk (five articles); long-term dynamics of livelihoods and landscape change and future trajectories (two articles); and natural resource management and governance under a changing climate, spanning forests, woodlands, and rangelands (four articles). The commonalities, key messages, and research gaps across the 11 articles are presented in a synthesis article. All the case studies pointed to the need for an integrated and in-depth understanding of the multiple drivers of landscape and livelihood change and how these interact with local histories, knowledge systems, cultures, complexities, and lived realities. Moreover, where there are interventions (such as new governance systems, REDD+ or climate smart agriculture), it is critical to interrogate what is required to ensure a fair and equitable distribution of emerging benefits.
