Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication, Proceedings of the Interamerican Dialogue on Water Management, contain papers at the conference of the same, held in Miami, Florida, october 27-30, 1993. The Dialogue provided a forum for the advancement of technical and institutional knowledge and promotion of sound and sustainable water management practices throughout the western hemisphere. Also, the Dialogue served as a linchpin for the consolidation of an international water resource partnership called the Interamerican Water Resource Network, to facilitate the exchange of information, promotion of cooperation and training among water resource professionals and institutions between North, Central, South America and the Caribbean. Emphasizing the diversity of water resource problems and solutions, emerging problem areas, and financial resource scarcity, many papers were presented under three main roundtable tracks: 1) Management of Aquatic Ecosystems; 2) Water Supply and Sanitation Infrastructure in Sustainable Development Context; and 3) Water Governance and Policy. The Dialogue also hosted a series of keynote speakers, dignitaries and panelists from non-government organizations, multi-lateral financing institutions, international organizations, foreign governments, and federal, state, and local officials who presented their perspectives on the issue of water resource management, sustainable development and empowerment. In addition, traditional topics such as hydrological and wetlands research, environmental impact assessments, water supply modelling, and water policy were discussed.

Book excerpt: Water Planning for Food Production in Developing Countries brings together the knowledge of past efforts to alleviate water scarcities that have led to food shortages in order to improve the process in the future. Phillip Z. Kirpich addresses this issue as the population and the desire for higher living standards increase in developing countries, bringing about a greater demand for food. He points out that the demand must be met by irrigated, rather than rainfed agriculture. Kirpich details the major obstacles that must be overcome when these situations arise due to the nature of these countries. He explains how the necessary improvements can be made, citing lessons learned from thirty cases in twenty-five countries, so that international agencies and governments can work to efficiently solve these problems.

A common thread running through the volume is the analysis of ethical principles as the backbone of practical policies and law for the benefit of the environment, and ultimately for the benefit of its inhabitants. The contributors are all at the forefront of their respective fields and fall into two essential categories: well-established scholars in the field of environmental ethics; and a group of newer voices that have followed what might be characterized as the first wave of environmental ethics scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a comprehensive overview of the hydrology of the Nile River, especially the ecohydrological degradation and challenges the basin is facing, the impact of climate change on water availability and the transboundary water management issues. The book includes analysis and approaches that will help provide different insights into the hydrology of this complex basin, which covers 11 countries and is home to over 300 million people. The need for water-sharing agreements that reflect the current situations of riparian countries and are based on equitable water- sharing principles is stressed in many chapters. This book explores water resource availability and quality and their trends in the basin, soil erosion and watershed degradation at different scales, water and health, land use and climate change impact, transboundary issues and water management, dams, reservoirs and lakes. The link between watershed and river water quantity and quality is discussed pointing out the importance of watershed protection for better water resource management, water accessibility, institutional set-up and policy, water demand and management. The book also presents the water sharing sticking points in relation to historical treaties and the emerging water demands of the upstream riparian countries. The need for collaboration and identification of common ground to resolve the transboundary water management issues and secure a win-win is also indicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Latin America suffered a profound state crisis in the 1980s, which prompted not only the wave of macroeconomic and deregulation reforms known as the Washington Consensus, but also a wide variety of institutional or 'second generation' reforms. 'The State of State Reform in Latin America' reviews and assesses the outcomes of these less studied institutional reforms. This book examines four major areas of institutional reform: a. political institutions and the state organization; b. fiscal institutions, such as budget, tax and decentralization institutions; c. public institutions in charge of sectoral economic policies (financial, industrial, and infrastructure); and d. social sector institutions (pensions, social protection, and education). In each of these areas, the authors summarize the reform objectives, describe and measure their scope, assess the main outcomes, and identify the obstacles for implementation, especially those of an institutional nature.
