Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discrete Wavelet Transform is a wavelet (DWT) transform that is widely used in numerical and functional analysis. Its key advantage over more traditional transforms, such as the Fourier transform, lies in its ability to offer temporal resolution, i.e. it captures both frequency and location (or time) information. This book presents a succinct compendium of some of the more recent variants of DWTs and their use to come up with solutions to an array of problems transcending the traditional application areas of image/video processing and security to the relatively newer areas of medicine, artificial intelligence, power systems and telecommunications. The first of the two sections of this book contains three chapters devoted to traditional applications of DWTs in digital image compression, copyright protection and video resolution enhancement. The second section, comprising of five chapters, is devoted to variants of the DWT and their applications in humanoid-robot vision systems; modeling and simulation recognition of physiological and behavioral traits through human gait and facial images; assessment of agitation and sedation in intensive care patients; maximization of power control systems; and, finally, in demodulation of FM data in free-space optical control systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational photography refers broadly to imaging techniques that enhance or extend the capabilities of digital photography. This new and rapidly developing research field has evolved from computer vision, image processing, computer graphics and applied optics—and numerous commercial products capitalizing on its principles have already appeared in diverse market applications, due to the gradual migration of computational algorithms from computers to imaging devices and software. Computational Photography: Methods and Applications provides a strong, fundamental understanding of theory and methods, and a foundation upon which to build solutions for many of today's most interesting and challenging computational imaging problems. Elucidating cutting-edge advances and applications in digital imaging, camera image processing, and computational photography, with a focus on related research challenges, this book: Describes single capture image fusion technology for consumer digital cameras Discusses the steps in a camera image processing pipeline, such as visual data compression, color correction and enhancement, denoising, demosaicking, super-resolution reconstruction, deblurring, and high dynamic range imaging Covers shadow detection for surveillance applications, camera-driven document rectification, bilateral filtering and its applications, and painterly rendering of digital images Presents machine-learning methods for automatic image colorization and digital face beautification Explores light field acquisition and processing, space-time light field rendering, and dynamic view synthesis with an array of cameras Because of the urgent challenges associated with emerging digital camera applications, image processing methods for computational photography are of paramount importance to research and development in the imaging community. Presenting the work of leading experts, and edited by a renowned authority in digital color imaging and camera image processing, this book considers the rapid developments in this area and addresses very particular research and application problems. It is ideal as a stand-alone professional reference for design and implementation of digital image and video processing tasks, and it can also be used to support graduate courses in computer vision, digital imaging, visual data processing, and computer graphics, among others.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facial recognition software has improved by leaps and bounds over the past few decades, with error rates decreasing significantly within the past ten years. Though this is true, conditions such as poor lighting, obstructions, and profile-only angles have continued to persist in preventing wholly accurate readings. Face Recognition in Adverse Conditions examines how the field of facial recognition takes these adverse conditions into account when designing more effective applications by discussing facial recognition under real world PIE variations, current applications, and the future of the field of facial recognition research. The work is intended for academics, engineers, and researchers specializing in the field of facial recognition.

SCIA 2009 was the 16th in the biennial series of conferences, which has been organized in turn by the Scandinavian countries Sweden, Finland, D- mark and Norway since 1980. The event itself has always attracted participants and author contributions from outside the Scandinavian countries, making it an international conference. The program covered high-quality scienti?c cont- butions within image analysis, human and action analysis, pattern and object recognition, colorimagingandquality, medicalandbiomedicalapplications, face andheadanalysis, computer vision, andmultispectralcoloranalysis. The papers werecarefully selected based on at least two reviews. Among 154 submissions 79 wereaccepted,leadingtoanacceptancerateof51%. SinceSCIAwasarrangedas a single-track event, 30 papers were presented in the oral sessions and 49 papers were presented in the poster sessions. A separate session on multispectral color science was organized in cooperation with the 11th Symposium of Multispectral Color Science (MCS 2009). Since 2009 was proclaimed the “International Year of Astronomy” by the United Nations General Assembly, the conference also contained a session on the topic “Imageand PatternAnalysis in Astronomyand Astrophysics. ” SCIA has a reputation of having a friendly environment, in addition to hi- quality scienti?c contributions. We focused on maintaining this reputation, by designing a technical and social program that we hope the participants found interesting and inspiring for new research ideas and network extensions. We thank the authors for submitting their valuable work to SCIA.
