Download or read book The Third Domain written by Tim Friend and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-08-12 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Domain is the untold story of how the discovery of a new form of life-first ridiculed, then ignored for the past thirty years by mainstream scientists-is revolutionizing science, industry, and even our search for extraterrestrial life. Classification is a serious issue for science: if you don't know what you're looking at, how can you interpret what you see? Starting with Carolus Linnaeus in the 17th century, scientists have long struggled to order and categorize the many forms of life on Earth. But by the early 20th century the tree of life seemed to have stabilized, with two main domains of life at its roots: single-celled and multi-celled organisms. All creatures fit into one of these two groups. Or so we thought. But in 1977, a lone scientist named Carl Woese determined that archaea-biochemically and genetically unique organisms that live and thrive in some of the most inhospitable environments on Earth-were a distinct form of life, unlike anything seen on Earth before. This shocking discovery was entirely incompatible with the long-standing classification of life as we know it. But as it turned out, archaea were not life as we know it, and the tree of life had to be uprooted once again. Now, archaea are being hailed as one of the most important scientific revelations of the 20th century. The Third Domain tells the story of their strange potential and investigates their incredible history to provide a riveting account of an astonishing discovery.
Book Synopsis Enzymes and Food Processing by : G. G. Birch
Download or read book Enzymes and Food Processing written by G. G. Birch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. S. SHALLENBERGER Cornell University, New York State Agricultural Research Station, New York, USA Among the material to be discussed in this first section of the 'Enzymes and Food Processing Symposium' is subject matter that can be viewed as a marriage between enzyme technology and sugar stereochemistry. In order to bring the significance of the material to be presented into proper perspective, I would like you to pretend, for a moment, that you are a researcher making a proposal on this subject to a Research Granting Agency in order to obtain financial support for your ideas. However, the year is 1880. Under the 'objectives' section of your proposal, you state that you intend to attach the intangible vital force or spirit-that is, the catalyst unique to the chemistry of living organisms-to an inert substrate such as sand. Thereafter you will pass a solution of right handed glucose (also known as starch sugar) past the 'vital force' and in the process convert it to left-handed glucose (also known as fruit sugar). The peer review committee would probably reject the proposal as sheer nonsense because the statements made were not only contrary to their experience, but also contrary to what they had been taught. Perhaps a few select people would have some feeling for what you were talking about, but commiseration would be the only form of support that they could offer.

Book Synopsis Fermentation Products by : Claude Vezina
Download or read book Fermentation Products written by Claude Vezina and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 617 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Biotechnology, Volume III: Fermentation Products is the third of a series of three volumes and is based on the proceedings of the Sixth International Fermentation Symposium (IFS-6) held in London, Ontario, Canada, 20-25 July 1980. This volume contains 87 papers organized into nine sections. The papers under Section I deal with developments in the field of secondary metabolism (functions of secondary metabolites in the producing organisms; roles of plasmids in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites; and protoplast fusion in industrial microorganisms). Sections II to VII examine the fermentation of antibiotics; amino acids, vitamins, and nucleotides; microbial enzymes; products from immobilized cells and enzymes; mycotoxins; and biopolymers. The final two sections present studies on bioconversions. The volume also includes the invited keynote address of Professor Hamao Umezawa ""Problems and Trends in the Development of New Antibiotics and Other Useful Microbial Products"". This volume will be a valuable resource for students and researchers in industrial microbiology, biochemical engineering and related areas, as well as managers of biotechnology.
Download or read book Diseases written by Henry L. Foster and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-04-22 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mouse in Biomedical Research, Volume II: Diseases is a compilation of papers detailing infectious diseases of the mouse. This compilation deals with bacterial, mycotic, viral, protozoal, rickettsial, parasitic, non-neoplastic, and metabolic diseases of the mouse. Several papers describe the different diseases found in the digestive, respiratory, urogenital, integumentary, central nervous, lymphoreticular, musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and endocrine systems of the mouse. This book lists the possible bacterial infections, as well as other miscellaneous infections such as those caused by aerosols, particles, and the air in the laboratory environment. This text also lists viruses that can affect the mouse such as the lactate dehydrogenase-elevating virus, mouse pox, polyomavirus, and the minute virus. This book describes the process of identification, diagnosis, epidemiology, treatment, control, prevention, and occurrence of these diseases. This text also reviews the diseases that can be transmitted from infected mice to humans, as well as through animal bites and allergic reactions. This book is suitable for researchers, clinical assistants, and scientists dealing with laboratory animals, particularly with mice as test animals. This book can also be helpful for veterinarians and doctors of infectious diseases transferred from animals.

Download or read book The Rumen Microbial Ecosystem written by P.N. Hobson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Preface to the first edition of this book explained the reasons for the publication of a comprehensive text on the rumen and rumen microbes in 1988. The microbes of the ruminant's forestomach and those in related organs in other animals and birds provide the means by which herbivorous animals can digest and obtain nutriment from vegetation. In turn, humans have relied, and still do rely, on herbivores for much of their food, clothing and motive power. Herbivores also form the food of carnivorous animals and birds in the wild. The importance of the rumen microorganisms is thus apparent. But, while a knowledge of rumen organisms is not strictly neces sary for the normal, practical feeding of farm animals, in recent years there has been much more emphasis on increasing the productivity of domesti cated animals and in rearing farm animals on unusual feedstuffs. Here, a knowledge of the reactions of the rumen flora, and the limits to these reactions, can be invaluable. In addition, anaerobic rumen-type microor ganisms are found in the intestines of omnivores, including humans, and can be implicated in diseases of humans and animals. They are also found in soils and natural waters, where they playa part in causing pollution and also in reducing it, while the same organisms confined in artificial systems are essential for the purification of sewage and other polluting and toxic wastes.
