Book Synopsis Land and the City by : Philip Kivell
Download or read book Land and the City written by Philip Kivell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2004. Presents a broad analysis of land use patterns and processes in urban areas. Land has the greatest significance for the spatial patterning and functioning of modern urban settlements and societies - providing the basic morphological elements of the city, it is a source of social and economic power, is intimately bound up with environmental issues and lies at the heart of planning. This book examines the way in which land is allocated and used in both theoretical and practical senses. The author examines the empirical data to reveal the sources and nature of land, how land is used and how those uses are changing in the contemporary city. Particular attention is paid to the misuse of land through vacancy or dereliction. He also explores the importance of land ownership and the principles of land policy using case studies. Finally, he assesses the land use implications of major urban change - deindustrialization, counter-urbanization and new technology. For the first time the overall significance of land use and ownership are examined in an urban geographical and planning context.
Book Synopsis The King's Nurseries by : John Field
Download or read book The King's Nurseries written by John Field and published by Taylor & Francis Group. This book was released on 1987 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Westminster is unique among major public schools in that it remains in the heart of London, on the site of its medieval beginnings. As a result its history is continuoulsy intertwined with the momentous state events and political turmoils of the capital. It has enjoyed royal patronage and a fair share of political influence. But its position close to the seat of power has also sometimes been dangerous. Its principal buildings were destroyed by enemy action in 1941. This book is about the life of this institution: its Head Masters, its staff and its pupils. The latter were by no means always a credit to the school: they committed murder; they were disruptive at Queen Victoria's coronation; they vilified one unpopular Head Master; and for a period they pretty well ran the school. They also emerge as the true heroes of the story. Old Westminsters dominated Parliament for most of the 18th century; the output of leading politicians, statesmen and soldiers has continued to this day. The school's contribution to literature, philosophy and the arts, has been immense. In addition to its famous successes Westminster has prodouced some outstanding failures, some notable revolutionaries and traitors, and some disarming eccentrics. The auther is librarian and archivist at Westminster School, and has taught English there since 1964, as well as directing plays, operas and musicals. He has unearthed previously undiscovered documents and anecdotes, to add to the accounts of previous histories, as well as bringing it up-to-date to cover the last four decades of change. -- Product Description.

Book Synopsis The Battle for Tolmers Square by : Nick Wates
Download or read book The Battle for Tolmers Square written by Nick Wates and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1976, this book tells of the dramatic struggle between tenants' groups, community associations, students, squatters, intellectuals, political parties, and property developers at Tolmers Square in north London. The author describes how property developers, interested only in maximising profits, attempted to redevelop the Tolmers area for offices, while the local authority, pressurised by local tenants and faced with a housing shortage, tried to redevelop for housing. This book is about the politics of central city redevelopment. Although this text focuses on one particular case study, the same processes operate in all cities where land is used as a commodity for financial speculation. By tracing the Tolmers case in detail, this text demonstrates the forces which operate in city redevelopment, and shows the affect which various forms of opposition can have.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past thirty-five years, a substantial amount of theoretical and empirical scholarly research has been developed across the discipline domains of Transportation. This research has been synthesized into a systematic handbook that examines the scientific concepts, methods, and principles of this growing and evolving field. The Handbook of Transportation Science outlines the field of transportation as a scientific discipline that transcends transportation technology and methods. Whether by car, truck, airplane - or by a mode of transportation that has not yet been conceived - transportation obeys fundamental properties. The science of transportation defines these properties, and demonstrates how our knowledge of one mode of transportation can be used to explain the behavior of another. Transportation scientists are motivated by the desire to explain spatial interactions that result in movement of people or objects from place to place. Its methodologies draw from physics, operations research, probability and control theory.
