It was the intention of the organizers that this meeting should honour the life long work in this field of Professor Helen Sawyer Hogg. She has been continuously active in observational research on variables in globular clusters for 46 years and her catalogues and bibliographies as well as her research papers, review articles and IA U reports as chairman of the committee on variable stars in clusters are of fundamental importance to all workers in this field. The scope of the colloquium covered both observational and theoretical aspects of the problem, including the relationship of variables to non-variable cluster members, the position of the variables in the HR diagram and their importance for problems of stellar evolution, empirical data on the variables, periods and period changes, and the relevant parts of pulsation theory. The meeting was particularly successful in bringing together observers and theorists. It will have achieved its object if it has shown both observers and theorists which are the problems most suitable for attack at the present time. The meeting clearly demonstrated the great importance of research on variables in globular clusters and related systems for our understanding both of stellar evolution and stellar pulsation.

Book excerpt: The 1969 ESLAB symposium 'Intercorrelated Satellite Observations Related to Solar Events' was held at a time when the importance of bringing together measure ments made simultaneously in different regions of space was beginning to be appreciated. To-day it is universally accepted that the major experimental steps forward in understanding the physics of the Sun-Earth relationships are likely to be made through pre-planned correlated satellite studies. Such considerations have led to the organisation of the International Magnetospheric Study and the joint ESROj NASA International Magnetospheric Explorer, (Mother-Daughter-Heliocentric) mission. The seventh ESLAB symposium was planned as a follow up to that of 1969 with the aim of deriving maximum benefit from those spacecraft which through good fortune found themselves simultaneously operating in different regions of the magnetosphere and interplanetary space. ESRO had launched in early 1972 its HEOS-2 satellite to investigate fields and particles in the unexplored region far above the North pole of the Earth and it became clear that the interesting new results arriving from that mission could profitably be linked with those from various American and the U.S.S.R. PROGNOZ satellites. The book follows the order of the symposium (unfortunately the PROGNOZ contribution did not materialise) concentrating, through both review lectures and of new experimental results, on the nature of the boundaries between the presentation the interplanetary medium and the magnetosphere and the interaction of each region on the other.

Book excerpt: Eclipsing Variables - What They can Tell Us and What We can do with Them The aim of the present book will be to provide an introduction to the inter pretation of the observed light changes of eclipsing binary stars and their analysis for the elements of the respective systems. Whenever we study the properties of any celestial body - be it a planet or a star - all information we wish to gain can reach us through two different channels: their gravitational attraction, and their light. Gravitational interaction between our Earth and its celestial neighbours is, however, measurable only at distances of the order of the dimensions of our solar system; and the only means of communication with the realm of the stars are their nimble-footed photons reaching us - with appropriate time-lag - across the intervening gaps of space. As long as a star is single and emits constant light, it does not constitute a very revealing source of information. A spectrometry of its light can disclose, to be sure, the temperature (colour, or ionization) of the star's semi-transparent outer layers, their chemical composition, and prevalent pressure (through Stark effect) or magnetic field (Zeeman effect), it can disclose even some information about its absolute luminosity or rate of spin. It cannot, however, tell us anything about what we should like to know most - namely, the mass or size (i.e., density) of the respective configuration; its absolute dimensions, or its internal structure.

Of all the reasons for exploring the Universe, none is more com pelling than the possibility of discovering intelligent life elsewhere in the Universe. Still the quest for extraterrestrial life has been near the bottom of the astronomers' list of priorities, not because the number of extraterrestrial civilizations is conjectured to be van ishingly small, but because our powers of detection were thought to be far too weak. About ten years ago, however, the growing reach of ra dio telescopes on the ground and of optical and infrared telescopes in space persuaded a number of thoughtful astronomers that the time for a more serious search had arrived. Accordingly, a joint Soviet-American conference on the problems of Communication with Extraterrestrial In telligence was convened at the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory of the Armenian Academy of Sciences during September 5-11, 1971 and was soon followed by a number of other important meetings, notably a series of NASA-sponsored workshops in the USA held between January, 1975 and May, 1976. Since SETI is fundamentally an international undertaking and as tronomical methods and techniques are required for its pursuit, it is natural for the International Astronomical Union to lend its support by sponsoring conferences and otherwise facilitating cooperation among countries. There has, in recent years, been renewed interest in theories that connect up gravitation and particle physics, and in the astrophysical consequences of such theories. Some of these accounts involve a time-variation of the Newtonian gravitational parameter, G. In this respect, the present book may be regarded as a companion to my Cosmology and Geophysics (Hilger, Bristol, 1978). There is some overlap as regards the discussion of G-variability, but the emphasis in the present book is on astrophysics while the emphasis in the other one is on geophysics. The subject is a very broad one indeed, and in giving a review of it I have adopted a somewhat unorthodox way of presenting the material involved. The main reason for this is that a review of such a wide subject should aim at two levels: the level of the person who is interested in it, and the level of the person who is professionally engaged in research into it. To achieve such a two-level coverage, I have split the text up into two parts. The first part (Chapters 1-7) represents a relatively non-technical overview of the subject, while the second part (Chapters 8-11) represents a technical examination of the most important aspects of non-Einsteinian gravitational theory and its relation to astrophysics.

Book excerpt: The principal purpose of IAU Colloquium No. 35 was to discuss those aspects of the techniques of the compilation, evaluation, and distribution of data that are common to astrometry, photometry and spectrometry of stars and stellar systems. In the announcement of the Colloquium, it was suggested that there would be special emphasis on the techniques of quality control, and on the standards for the presentation of numerical data in both printed and com puter-readable form. As the meeting progressed it became clear that the lack of a standard, unambiguous system for the identifi cation of stellar objects was a source of much confusion and inefficiency in the use of existing data files. This and other such matters were the subject of further discussions by Commission 5 at the General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), which was held at Grenoble during the following fortnight, 24 August - 2 September 1976. The proposal for the Colloquium was prepared by J. Jung, who was then Director of the Centre des Donnees Stellaires at Stras bourg, and G. A. Wilkins, Chairman of the IAU Working Group on Numerical Data, and was accepted by the IAU Executive Committee on the recommendation of the President of Commission 5, with the support of Commissions 25, 29 and 45. Book excerpt: The last major conference on infrared astronomy was the IAU Symposium No. 96 in June 1980. Since then, the discipline has continued to mature and to contribute to all branches of astrophysics. One particular area of growth has been in spectroscopic capabilities at all infrared wavelengths. The purpose of the Symposium in Toledo was to review the scientific questions to be addressed via infrared spectroscopy and to provide, in the proceedings, a useful summary of the field. The sensitivity of infrared spectroscopic observations is still generally limited by detector characteristics or by thermal background radiation. However in recent years improvements in detector technology together with developments in spectroscopic instrumentation have made possible both quite detailed spectroscopy of the brighter members of many classes of galactic sources and also begun to open up some infrared spectroscopy of extragalactic sources. The potential of the field in the next decade or two is clear. The lRAS mission has completed one of the pre-requisites, namely an all-sky photometric survey. Major space missions utilising cryogenic infrared telescopes have been approved in Europe (ISO) and seem likely in the USA (SIRTF); plans for space submillimeter telescopes are firming up. On the ground large telescopes optimized for infrared observations are now in operation at high altitude sites and specialized submillimeter facilities are under construction. The particular advantages of planned, very large telescopes for infrared observations are widely accepted.
