Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Bostonian Society: At the Annual Meeting, January 14, 1890 The Ninth Annual Meeting of the Bostonian Society was held in the Council Chamber of the Old State House on Tuesday, January 14, 1890, at 3 P.M., the President, Mr. Curtis Guild, in the Chair. The records of the last meeting were read and approved. After the election of new members, the President addressed the Society as follows: - President Guild's Address. Fellow Members of the Bostonian Society: The Bostonian Society after ten years of existence seems to have so thoroughly demonstrated its usefulness to our fellow citizens that it is now generally recognized as a permanent institution of genuine value, from which certain results are to be expected, and to which a certain deference should be paid. An association that voluntarily addresses itself to the task of promoting the study of the history of Boston, is to a large extent expected, as far as lies in its power, to point out and furnish fresh facilities for students, to make all matters pertaining to that history of prime importance, to preserve historic documents, manuscripts and accounts intact, to clear up as far as possible historic doubts, and not only to rescue from threatened obscurity matters relating to the past, but to preserve the memory of those that are occurring at the present time.
